1  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / Re: How to override sound sets for all sessions of a LM semester? on: June 15, 2011, 06:15:39 PM
Thanks so much for your help Kezia.

I created the word and sound files and thought I used the right settings but it did not work out.
The next day however it worked fine. No idea what I did wrong but it works now.

Anyway, maybe my aproach is not that sensible anyway?
After all the values, operations and symbols are the same just the words for numbers and operators are different for each of the languages.
Does it make more sense to do LM in English only so that DD learns the concept of numbers, counting and math in general and at a later stage just teach her the words in the different languages?

Thanks for the link!

The download seems to work again
3  BrillKids Software / HOW TOs and FAQs / How to override sound sets for all sessions of a LM semester? on: June 08, 2011, 02:48:57 PM
Hi,

I would like to use LM in English and 3 other languages.

Can I use the override function to change the sound sets for a full semester of lessons?
And if so, can they be saved as seperate files so that I do not have to change the language back to English when I want to use English sound sets?

Is there a "How to" on overriding the sound sets for the LM Sessions?

I thought I got it but after some trial and error I can clearly say I didn't  blush

Thanks
4  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Swimming Lessons for Babies. When did you start? on: June 07, 2011, 01:01:31 PM
RenuPrem,

we are with Water Babies who are a UK based franchise.

This is the link to their website:
http://www.waterbabies.co.uk/

They were the only ones I found when googling for baby swimming in Ireland. We are not really spoilt for choice here it seems. They are also quiet expensive compared to baby swimming classes in other countries.
However, we are on the second term with them now and LOVE it.

5  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: baby is more interested in smashing the keyboard on: June 01, 2011, 05:46:56 PM
Sounds familiar  smile my baby does the same. She loves inspecting the laptop and press all the keys.

We usually play a fisher price "baby online game" for a couple of minutes. She can hit all the keys to her heart's content and loves it. After a few minutes she had enough and is ready to learn some words.

6  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Swimming Lessons for Babies. When did you start? on: June 01, 2011, 01:46:50 PM
My DD started swimming lessons at the age of 3-4 months.
We planned to start earlier but there was no class available at the time.

The pool where she has her lesson is about 30Celsius and the babies wear baby wet suits (sooo adorable). There is obviously chlorine in the water but the lessons are only 30 minutes once a week so I don't think it has a negative effect on her health.

We are on the second term now and she and daddy seem to enjoy it quite a bit.
Over the last weeks she did plenty of under water swims and at the moment they try to build up their stamina by increasing the number of immersions

The instructor is absolutely great. She keeps an eye on every individual baby and makes sure that none of them ever gets stressed or scared. The focus is on the babies enjoying their time in the water and learning skills to survive in case they fall into the water.

This is what waterbabies say on their website regarding age and immunisation:
Quote
Your baby can begin swimming just as soon as you are ready to bring them. Our youngest client was just two days old (the niece of an instructor!) but most babies start at around six weeks. Our only criterion is that they need to be less than one year when starting the course.

All of the pools in which we operate are heated to 30° or above. However, babies under twelve weeks or lbs still need to begin lessons in a hydrotherapy or extra warm-water pool.

Thousands of babies across the world have been taken swimming prior to being immunised with no harmful effects.  The UK NHS Choices website, which gives advice about immunisations, states you can take your baby swimming at any time, regardless of where they are with their inoculations.

The reason for this is that the water treatment procedures required for any public pool make the likelihood of transmitting infections extremely unlikely.  Couple this with the fact that the diseases against which your baby are being inoculated can’t actually be carried in chlorinated water and you can see why we’re pretty confident in suggesting that any time is a good time to start your baby in the pool
7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Free language learning websites/software on: May 13, 2011, 09:47:58 PM
I tried Busuu & BBC and found them both quite good especially bearing in mind that they are free to use.

The BBC has interactive courses, video courses vocabulary lists etc.
They also have TV shows for some of the languages that you can use with their on line material. I am not sure though If they still broadcast these shows.
They have quite a few languages available but I noticed that many of their language pages haven't been updated in years.

The page is certainly good to get the basics when learning a new language. Not sure it is suitable for advanced learners ( I never made it that far blush  )

Busuu has well structured courses with varying topics. Busuu also has quite an active community.

You can get your posts or voice recordings corrected by a native speaker. There is also an integrated messenger so you can chat in real time with people from all over the world.

The only downside is that so far they just have a small selection of languages available.
As of yet they do not offer the language I would like to learn. So for now I just log in every now and then and correct other people's postings.

None of the two sites are suited for small children though.

Hope that helps....

8  Local Support Groups / Foreign Language Boards Discussions / Norwegian speakers on: April 11, 2011, 01:03:50 AM
Hi all,

are there still some Norwegian speakers around that would be willing to share their resources for teaching baby to read?

My baby is half Norwegian and I would love her being able to communicate with her family in Norway.

Her dad speaks Norwegian with her on a regular basis but I would also like her to be able to read the language and dad does not have the time to teach her.
I understand a bit of Norwegian but cannot speak or write it... so any help & hints would be more than appreciated
9  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Kindergarten.com ABA apps are free in April! on: April 10, 2011, 09:54:57 PM
sounds great

Do you know by any chance if they have apps for Android Phones (the poor man's iPhone  Wink ) as well?
10  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Baby led weaning (BLW) on: April 08, 2011, 12:49:50 PM
I stumbled across this website and the book featured there a while ago
http://www.babyledweaning.com/
Reading it made perfect sense to me so I decided to try it and wait until baby is at least 6 month before introducing solids.

But I wasn't prepared for the reaction of other people. Pretty much everyone from the paedriatician to the health visitor to my friends even my hairdresser had a different idea about the matter.  In the end I decided to not talk about it anymore and if people asked if I gave her solids I just said yes...

Baby is 6 months now and we started solids this week. She tried banana, sweet potato and butternut squash so far. It is quite messy but she seems to really enjoy exploring the different tastes and textures.

11  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Multilingual babies on: April 08, 2011, 12:20:29 PM
Thanks so much for your replies.

Some of my friend's kids seem to have real issues with being multilingual up to the point that they refuse to speak any other language than what they speak in daycare or school. So that got me worried a bit.

Knowing that it works quite well for you is encouraging as I started wondering if I was too ambitious trying to raise her multilingual.

On that note, we are just back from a trip to Europe to meet the family & friends and DD was quite excited about meeting everyone and hearing the different languages. We are back home now it she almost seems to be bored... ;-)
12  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Multilingual babies on: March 12, 2011, 10:20:21 PM
Hi all,

my DD is 5 month old now and will grow up multilingual as our friends & family are spread all over Europe.
She is currently exposed to 3 languages on a daily basis and I'm a bit concerned that it could be quite confusing for her.

Looking for people in a similar situation to share tips and experience.
