I thought the contest PokerDad had to pass his book "Talking From Infancy" along to some lucky reader was won by Ruwan.  I'd defintely say that was his idea if you have that book that he passed to someone else.  Ruwan, How do you like that book???

Pazylu,

Congratulations for your upcoming baby!  May god bless you, your family, and your new baby.
I personally would start with stimulation cards.  If you do a search on this forum, you should find
a free download.  These are designed to help your newborn's eyes focus.  Read the forums to find out more.  There is a great deal of early learning (EL) that you can do with your child.  Being that you are a school teacher, you should have a head start with what ideas you can do with children.  Ask around if you have questions.  Welcome to the forum.

33  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Sidney Ledson's book? on: March 04, 2013, 03:43:51 AM
For those who are interested to know.

The book took 4 days to get to Texas.  That's must faster than I expected.

I've been reading through the book, and it appears to be very interesting.

I'm glad I purchased it.

34  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Super Cute Phonics Videos starring Geraldine the Giraffe on: March 03, 2013, 07:58:32 PM
Can someone please contrast Geraldine the Giraffe and Alphablocks for me?  My boys don't seem interested in geraldine but have shown a great deal of interest in the many episodes of Alphablocks.  Are they getting enough from the Alphablocks?  Should I be using something better???

Please help.

35  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Sidney Ledson's book? on: February 25, 2013, 09:47:45 PM
I purchased the book last night.  The cost + shipping was approximately $31.03 US (I live within the USA).  They claim I should receive it in about 2-3 weeks.  I'm so excited.  I also searched for some discount codes, but none worked.  Just giving all a heads-up so you don't waste an hour searching.

Good luck!

36  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Doman's Teach your child to swim... on: February 13, 2013, 11:07:09 PM
I purchased Glenn Doman's "Teach Your Child to Swim" book.  I also felt like it had some general ideas for teaching infants how to swim, but I also felt it was lacking in depth.  The internet has quite a few websites that can really help parent and child progress.  Some companies really want to charge you for their online classes, but you can get a great deal of information free.  Worldwideswimschool.com is one site that allowed me to get a really good idea what I needed to do.  There was a blog about an infant named Evie and how she progressed with swimming since birth.  If you can find any of the monthly updates, it will really help in your quest for infant swimming.  As a reminder:  Some websites teach infant survival and some teach infant swimming or a combination of the two.  You need to know what you are looking to get out of the experience.

My twins (Now 2 years old) can hold their breath under water for 15 seconds.  They have no fear of water, have many of the motions down (Kicking and paddling), some success with floating, climbing out of the swimming pool, and submerging their faces while blowing bubbles on their own, etc...

Many of the lessons start when the child is months old, and you can do most everything in the bathtub until the infant/child gets bigger and stronger.

A word of caution though:  Some public swimming pools are not warm enough for children.
37  BrillKids Software / Tech Support / Aesop's Fables & Little Reader question on: January 18, 2013, 12:01:38 AM
In regards to viewing the Aesop's Fables Storybooks in Little Reader, I've noticed that the arrow is usually slower than the audio when the pages are being read.  I'm not sure if it is meant to be that way or not.  If there is an easy solution, I'd really like to know how to resolve it.  I would think the cursor needs to be slightly faster than the audio to help train the eyes to read efficiently, but I could be wrong.  Any input would be appreciated.

38  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Teaching Your Child Chess on: January 05, 2013, 03:52:42 AM
Tamsyn,

Please let us know what you think.  Do the videos have the ability to keep the childs attention?  Do the videos seem to be thorough as far as chess rules, tactics, and strategy are concerned?
Are the videos high quality?  how is the sound quality?  Would you buy it again?

Thank you in advance,

John
39  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Teaching Your Child Chess on: January 04, 2013, 08:53:02 AM
Hi,

I noticed the pricing was in GPB.  I'm going to assume that is the British pound.  has anyone in the U.S. purchased this?  If so,  were the videos downloadable to your computer for later viewing?

40  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: DOES BREAST FEEDING REALLY HURT? on: December 27, 2012, 11:47:39 PM
My wife and I breastfed, and I didn't feel any pain.  Sorry...  Just had to throw that in there from a man's perspective.  At the doctors office, we are asked if she is still breastfeeding, and I always respond...  "Yes, we are".

In all seriousness though.  The lactation nurses will tell you something like what Tamsyn just criticized other people about.  or at least they did for us. (Yes, still talking like I'm part of the team).

One thing that I do know though....  Buying one of those clear plastic shields really did help.  it lessened the pain significantly.  I'll let one of the mothers here debunk that idea if it's not always true.

Something my wife also did was buy a Medela breast pump  (the one that attached to the bra so you can walk around doing other things at the same time (multitasking))!  The pump we have has lasted thru twins and a baby girl, and it's still going strong.

At night, my wife pumps, and I feed the baby breastmilk from a bottle.  Of course, there were plenty of times when the baby did physically breastfeed.

The benefits of breastfeeding are enormous.  Every mother is different and ultimately it is up to you.  My wife and I would like to encourage you to breastfeed!   nowink

42  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: DEAL ALERT- Testing Mom Christmas Sale- Two Thumbs way up! on: December 24, 2012, 04:27:44 PM
Hello all!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy up-coming New Year, or whatever special time is coming up for you--  Enjoy your special time!!  Especially with your little one's.

Now to reply on topic.
I originally signed up with TestingMom.com July of 2011 for the daily question/activity.  I just searched for for all/most of their deal and found that the 70% off is actually really good.  Most times the discount was 50%.  Trust me... That 90% would have been such an awesome deal but I/we blew that one.

Does anyone know how much the 1% membership costs without any discounts.  I was trying to sign up for it, but it seems that you have to dig pretty deep just to get to where the pricing is.  I'm at work and can't spend the time to figure it out right now.

Thanks in advance,
John      laugh   Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas
43  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Hello Everyone... Eager Mom of 12months old twin boys... need ur help ;)) on: December 20, 2012, 07:35:23 PM
Andrew,
I'm so excited for you and your twins.  Like you, I have twins.  We've been doing early learning since they were born.  Sometimes the interuptions can really cause issues with the learning process, but as long as the twins are throwing a fit or hating what early learning (EL) you are doing at the moment, just try to stick with it.  Other members may differ with their advice, but this is what I found that works for my family.

"Each flashcard should take less than a second" --  I felt that was a good amount of time for my boys because we are working "Right Brained activities".

"Can you use the animal set and the family set at the same time" --  I feel that is a great idea.  As long as the animal set doesn't have too many flashcards, I think you are in good shape.

"When will you notice if your babies are learning to read"--  I haven't tested my children on their reading skills yet or pushed it all that hard, so I'm not the best one to ask.  Many member have their children reading extremely early, so they can put their input in.

"What else can you do in addition to what you are doing"--  When I started, I would spend about 20 minutes with each child.  I would focus on them and do my best to keep their attention.  After they finished, I would switch to the next child.  That worked pretty well for many months.
When we began EL, we were doing Little Reader, Little math (plus the schichida method), spanish, and sign language.  I eventually switched to a 55" TV and do 1 or 2 sessions a day because now I have a 3rd child (5 months old) that is going EL!

"Can you teach 2 languages at the same time"--  Absolutely YES!  Studies have shown the sooner you are teaching a 2nd or 3rd language, the better it is.  I'm now teaching my 3 children English, Spanish, Chinese, & sign language.  Their vocabulary is amazing.

"What can you start besides flashcards"--  There are many things you can start besides flashcards.  For instance, brillkids offers programs like Little reader, Little math, Little musician, and an assortment of other products.  There are free trials for the programs if you want to try them.

Enjoy your twins!  I love spending the extra time with my children.  Some days are great for teaching because they are paying attention so well, but other days aren't.  If they are having a bad day, just stop and resume the next day or give your children a break.

I'm teaching my children (Currently)...  English, Spanish, simplified Chinese, sign language, swimming, math, music (Little Musician), We also do ReadingBear.org, chess, memory games, and gymnastics.

I hope this helps,

John
44  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: News article says pushy parents are getting results on: December 14, 2012, 10:29:28 PM
TMT,

Yes, I read 4 pages of notes.  It was amazing how those people that stayed on subject were under the impression that Tiger Parents (like many of them called EL parents) were very strict and boring.  I think the vast majority of parents who do EL spend an enormous amount of time with their children.  That in itself will pay dividends many years from now.  People posting also felt that EL children were living a life of solitude when it comes to being around other children.  I would venture to guess that many EL children do spend many hours socializing with other children and many hours playing (being children).

As for the other posts that were totally off topic.  Stunning to say the least big grin    Many posters were either jealous or envious.  Not hard to figure that one out.  Anyways...  I felt like EL families were definitely the minority for those posting comments.
45  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: LITTLE PIM 45% off plus free shipping through November 28 on: December 06, 2012, 03:43:11 AM
Thinking I would be a cool dad for cyber-monday this year (2012), I purchased a handful of items from Little Pim.  I just found out tonight that my product finally shipped.  I'm just curious why any company would take 8-9 days to finally ship an order.  At this rate, I can only hope that my order arrives before the end of the year.  Normally, I would not vent (especially here on Brillkids), but Little Pim needs to improve its operations in sending out orders.  Anyone ordering from these guys-- it is my opinion that shipping time and delivery is completely unacceptable.
