16  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Irregular lessons - feel really bad about it, shall I give up alltogether? on: June 07, 2014, 06:21:30 AM
I think I know what you are going through and I feel somewhat different than the others who have responded.  I agree you should try not to focus on the results.  But, if you have been at it for two years and haven't seen any benefit then I would consider trying something different. It doesn't sound like either of you are having any fun and that could be the problem.  My son wasn't in love with little reader for the most part and didn't learn to read from it.  All kids are different.  Some kids love it and it did interest him sometimes but for the most part he was not begging for it.

After giving up on LR, We used a combination of readingbear.org, monkisee, and preschool prep (not all at the same time) and now after about a year and a half my son is a pretty good reader.   We did monkisee flash cards in conjunction with the videos as the last thing before bed and he loved it because howie and skip were on the box.  It was part of our routine and he would remind me if I tried to skip it.  The videos are much more entertaining than LR.  I think they are what made the flash cards so appealing.

I'd say, if you try something different and she still isn't interested then maybe letting it go for a while is the best thing.  All those other wonderful things you are doing with her are going to benefit her so much it won't matter what age she learned to read.  I hope it goes well for you!  Keep us posted!
17  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Little one loses focus with Sight Words and Pattern Phonics. Help! on: January 29, 2014, 04:40:03 AM
@skylark yes, I customized quite a bit for my son, but I am using LR on the ipad for my daughter. I don't think you can customize for ipad.  Its not hard to play just the sections I want though and I think the curriculumn is great, just lengthy. I've actually just let the pattern phonics play though since this post as it us quick, but still skipping the sight words.  My son used meet the sight words and easily learned the other sight words without LR so I just don't feel it is necessary.  my biggest desire is to keep it fun and interesting so I am try to do what I can to achieve that goal.  smile
18  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Little one loses focus with Sight Words and Pattern Phonics. Help! on: January 25, 2014, 05:10:15 PM
I skip them both.  The whole session is ridiculously long imo.  Your baby won't learn it if he isn't interested in it anyway.  The most important thing is to make sure the are having fun.  Good luck!
19  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Early Learning Pilot Program in Rwanda on: December 15, 2013, 06:30:21 PM
Wow. Fantastic.  I am so surprised nobody has commented on this yet.  Congratulations.  Sounds like your program is having a great impact.   yes

I love how your coordinator talks about playing with the baby in preparation for doing the cards.  It sounds like great fun for both mom and child and a great way to make the cards themselves a fun game.  I bet the families are very excited to see their children learn.  I am sure it must give them lots of hope for their baby's future.

This is not a criticism at all.  As it sounds like what you are doing is working, just another perspective.  It has actually worked for my son in the opposite way.  When he started to learn to read I would de-emphasize the word and spend most of our time on the picture.  This is how he liked to do it.  And of course the words can be shown quickly so he still learned them.

Here is a video of how I taught him in case it helps anyone.

I am very happy for you and the great work you are doing!  I hope you will continue to keep us informed!

20  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Biographies for kids - Exceptional People in Sports and History on: November 28, 2013, 06:20:25 AM
thanks so much Krista!  I found those books at the library and I placed a hold.  Can't wait for them to come in.  I'll tell Ian the Monkisee family recommended them and he will be thrilled.
21  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Feeding till how long? on: November 14, 2013, 11:11:11 PM
I think there are definite nutritional advantages to extended breastfeeding.  I am not sure how big though if he has an otherwise healthy diet (with omega 3).  There may be emotional benefits too, but I think you can fulfill those needs with lots of love. I think as long as you let him know when it is okay to have milk you won't do any emotional harm.  Sounds like you have it figured out. smile

When you are ready to completely wean, somebody told me she put bandaids on her nipples and told her kids she had ouchies so she couldn't give them milk.  She said it worked for 4 kids.
22  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Biographies for kids - Exceptional People in Sports and History on: November 14, 2013, 11:01:05 PM
Does anyone have any recommendations for biography type books with inspirational messages for kids?  I am thinking in particular of the disscussions had here on Mindset,The idea that talent and ability is not something inborn but something acheived through effort and hard work.  Ian is a HUGE sports fan and loves to read about sports heroes.  The books about Michael Jordan - Dream Big and Salt in His Shoes are good.  He also likes Pelé King of Soccer which tells how he came from very humble begginings to be a great soccer star (I am really looking forward to the World Cup next year.  He is crazy about soccer!   wacko  yes )

It doesn't have to be sports related.  I think it is great if he learns about other things.  He is passionate about sports through.  We are not into chapter books yet, but if you have recommendations i'll take them because we will be one day and it can maybe help someone else.  We also read English and Spanish.  Thanks so much for your responses!!!

23  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Feeding till how long? on: November 11, 2013, 11:16:42 PM
I nursed my guy until a few months through my pregnancy with my second and stopped at that point because I didn't want to be nursing two.  He was about two years four months.  I couldn't tell from your post if you wanted to stop breast feeding because you were done or if you thought you should stop. If the the latter, it is natural to continue breast feeding past two and very good for the child for nutrition and bonding. People tend to stopearlier more for cultural reasons but most kids would continue to nurse if it was their choice.  I wanted to wean at about one year, but I talked to another mom and she helped me realize that I was just feeling like I should wean and that I didn't really need to If I was still okay doing it.  And that by continuing I was giving my baby a great gift.

Of course my baby was a lot younger than yours at that point.  And after awhile, I really was done.  Personally I didn't like being undressed in public so I partially weaned my guy to prior to nap and bedtime.  I distracted him with a smoothie when he wanted to nurse and eventually would tell him It is not time for milk.  You can have milk before bed.  When I was ready to completely wean I started to tell him a few days before that I was running out of milk because he was such a big boy and had drunk it all up.  Then on the day I was going to wean him We bought him a cake and a present and congratulated him for being a big boy.  He asked once before bed that night and I reminded him that he had already drunk all the milk and he was fine with it.  Lucky for me, because I had no plan B!
24  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Article on the Brain and Sleep on: October 20, 2013, 10:02:46 PM
Interesting.  We finally decided to put Ian in preschool and he loves it.  Only thing is he misses his nap two days a week because of it.  He was beginning to loose his afternoon nap anyway or so I thought, but it seems he still needs it.  I've been wondering ifwe should look for a new school.  He is really fond of his teachers and often a very sensitive kid so I worry he would really feel  the loss of his teachers if we changed schools.  On the other hand My mom has something like Alzheimers (doctors have differing opinions on what is happening but it is very much like my Grandpa who had dementia) so that article is kind of scary for me.
25  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Grasp Exercises - Doing them Incorrectly on: October 15, 2013, 08:52:18 PM
My baby is a few weeks older and her hands slip too. I haven't focused on it too much though.  I just thought if we did it more often we'd see some progress.  They do gain a lot of weight in the first weeks.  A few pounds for a newborn is a big percentage of their weight.  So its probably more difficult to hang on.

So, while I was writting this I got interrupted and tried it again with my baby.  She actually did hang on this time. I was able to pull her up to sitting.  i didn't do anything different.   just keep at it.  smile
26  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: New Monki See Video - How God Made Everything on: October 05, 2013, 04:28:47 AM
I am sorry there has been hostility expressed here to one of the members.  Mom2bee has a right to spend her money on whatever product she chooses.  I think she is missing out too, but its her choice.
27  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: New Monki See Video - How God Made Everything on: October 04, 2013, 09:38:49 PM
I love the idea of Howie and Skip stories!  Monkisee is by far our favorite.  Lately Ian has been watching it even though he already learned all the words a while ago.  Krista, do you have Howie and Skip dolls for sale?  They would be a great prop to use when teaching our kids and just fun to play with!
28  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: At what age did your child start reading& on: September 30, 2013, 04:38:21 PM
I would say start intoducing phonics.  Readingbear.org is fantastic and is free. To answer your question, my son started started reading words at about two.  We were doing whole words and never had any success so we switched to readingbear.  Later we did have success with whole words using monkeysee.  From that point on he would pick up whole words from any source.  We are again finishing up doing the word list from readingbear although we are mostly using printed cards which can be found on this page under the video.

Good luck!
29  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How much do your 4-6 old children read to themselves? on: September 30, 2013, 05:33:57 AM
That is amazing Skylark.  You don't think she reads so fast because she learned to read early?  What kind of right braun training did you do?  Sorry for going off subject.
30  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello from Sunny California on: September 27, 2013, 09:38:23 PM
Welcome, We are in CA too.  I have an almost 3year old and a 7 week old. I am excited to do this with my second child as I lhave learned so much since my first was a baby.  We've also taught English and Spanish but gave up for now on Mandarin.  One day we may pick it up again.

Anyway, We'll look forward to hearing about your journey!
