That is so true, my son is 17 months and he is so well-behaved. he listens when I tell him lovingly not to do something. he knows what to play with(toys), and what not to play with. He does not throw tantrums, he communicates with us in his own way what he wants and we respond to that. My husband and I spend good quality time with him.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How closely do you follow the age guidelines for toys?

Hi krb When buying toys for my 17 month old son I always check safety first, if safety is not an issue I actually buy toys for his age and for children older than him. I actually try to buy educational toys for him like leapfrog and also lego building blocks, although they are for kids older than him, I use them to teach him alphabets and colours. I do the same with books, I buy books for his age group and for kids who are older than him.

I moved from South Africa to England 5 years ago, I didn't have formal qualifications. I went back to school and did a degree in Media studies, I am now finishing my Masters degree in Mass Communication.I will do a graduate teacher programme, I will be teaching english at a high school next year and get my qualified teacher status (QTS) which will take me 1 year. I will then be a qualified teacher. My husband has a diploma from South Africa, he is now doing his Law degree. We are also still laying our foundation here in England. We have a 16 month old son, both work full time, our working ours are flexible, it is challenging but it can be done.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Love of reading/books

My son is 12 months old, he started to throw tantrums few days ago. My husband and I didn't understand why he was behaving that way, we thought he was being difficult. But then when he starts to behave that way I started to read him books and then his behavior started to change and also everytime when we read with him we point at the words with figures as we read, he has started to point as well. What I do now is as I read I'll hold his hand and point at words with his fingers, he loves that. I 've been reading to him since he was born about 10-15 books a day. He loves his books. We also watch brainy baby tapes:ABC's, numbers, shapes and colours, animals, art and music which he loves very much. The problem is there are not enough hours in a day. But I'm happy to say my baby loves book.

Can somebody please explain to me what happens when kids start school and they can read and write and are far ahead in other things as well. I am from South Africa and don't really know how the UK school system works. I have a 11 month old son and at the moment I am teaching him to read, shapes, colours, numbers, ABC'c, about animals. I have made my own slideshows, we use brainy baby products, I also read to him a lot. I haven't seen any results yet, but i am looking forward to that. Both my son and I enjoy those moments together, for now I am just planting seeds.

I went back to work full time 2 months ago. My son is 11 months now. I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a work. I breastfeed my baby before I leave for work and immediately when I come home from work and just before he goes to bed. I am home 4 days a week, which is good because in those 4 days I breastfeed him whenever he wants. I am planning to breastfeed him untill he is 3 years old.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: I want the TV off but my husband doesn't !!

In my house TV is on almost every afternoon. My husband likes to wacth TV(mainly news and sports), he is a very hardworking man and says watching TV helps him relax.I must confess, I like to watch TV too. What are the negative effects of watching too much TV for babies. Is it going to affect or delay his learning process? We do most of our reading and learning in the mornings.
