1  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Teaching reading when my child is not speaking very much on: March 02, 2012, 04:09:51 AM

I haven't started on Lr yet and our trial run out before  i could get bootcamp on my mac. however I have also noticed that she will talk back to the screen when there are words that she recognizes. Our use of flash cards has been very erratic but the words she has learnt are the ones that she can pronounce better. So I am excited about geting Brillkids and adding it to our home schooling tools.

Your little one is lucky to have a mama so involved.
I find a lot of inspiration in both of you.
  Thanks!!

3  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: What are some of you favorite You Tube Videos on: March 02, 2012, 03:56:14 AM
My daughter Loves Baby songs by HAp Palmer and it has certainly helped her with english speaking.
She also loves The Mother Goose Club.com series and eventually we got the DVD.
I mostly use Utube to find spanish music for her and POCOYO. MAn she likes that like character.
We didn't have a tv before so we just watched utube all the time. Now mama's computer is a mess so we got a tv so that She can watch her Barney DVDs!!!
4  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Early Learning Foundations on: March 02, 2012, 03:49:29 AM

I am really glad I read this. We are  getting the LR program and was wondering about the math one. I do not want to have it sitting around unused but it seems that you can start around 3 years old. Is that right?
Wow!

5  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Anyone home schooling children with Down Syndrome? on: February 22, 2012, 04:08:15 AM

   Thank you guys.

We may be moving fro mthe States to Germany for a year so the home schooling may be the option we go for at least for that year and then we will see.
My concern is thefact that we do not have any other children and most mother I come to meet are way too much younger than I am so it is not that easy to create bonds and relationships with other children her age. If we stay we may send her to a three day program so that we can try a bit of both worlds.
I don't know... I guess that I doubt my ability to homeschool. I really appreciate the resources mentioned Kmum.
I need to keep iinvestigating about curriculums it all seems a bit too much right now. I know. One step at a time...
6  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Red necking? on: February 22, 2012, 03:58:05 AM

Oops! I really meant red Shirting... I guess that I am too late when I sit down to the computer and also english is my third language so... I am sorry.

We are considering moving to Germany for a year which will mean that I have to home school my daughter. Homeschooling has always being interesting to me and this may be the oportunity to give it a try. However, iam very aware of how much she thrives when around peers. She is such an observant and imitator and her speech has flourished since she is attending a 2 year old program. So I have been doubting myself.

I agree on the benefits of 1 on 1 and how much more she knows academically than most of her peers yet I would like the time to work on fine motor, crayons, scissors, little crafts and projects that right now she cannot be bothered with because she gets frustrated and, let's face it she will not get that much help in preschool, I don't think, expect...

So I think you have given me a good thumbs up.
  Thank you so much!!

7  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Red necking? on: February 16, 2012, 01:54:07 AM

   Hi there!

I have just become familiar with this term and need to ask: Is any of you keeping their child behind for a year so that is better prepared later on?

Also have you all sent you kids with special needs into the school system at age three?

We may be moving to Germany for a year which would keep my daughter out of pre school at least for the first year. As you can imagine a lot of thinking and concern is going into this. Do you have any experience/ advice with this kind of situation?

  Thanks!
8  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Anyone in Berlin? on: February 16, 2012, 01:49:07 AM

Hi there is a good possibility that we will move to Germany for a year. I wonder if anyone here is in Berlin or knows something about the Down Syndrome community there?
  Thanks
9  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Anyone home schooling children with Down Syndrome? on: February 16, 2012, 01:38:06 AM

  Hi.
My daughter is in transition to the school district and we are going through all the paper work and evaluation stuff. She is right now attending a beautiful pre school that happens to run a 2 year old program. It is just something more than a day care. They make crafts, with help and they have circle time with stories and snack time. You get the picture. It has over all been great for her social skills yet we wonder about home schooling her from now on. We see how much she has achieved with the one on one attention at home with us and therapists.

I know there are people home schooling their children with special needs and I wonder, what is your opinion on the subject?
If you are already home schooling, how is it going? Any tips?
Thanks!
10  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Please introduce yourself! on: February 12, 2012, 01:16:49 AM

  Hi Everyone!
I cannot talk about anything yet. We are still getting into this, I mean, getting a Windows computer and all that jazz. However I am totally sold on it.

mko,  We are bilingual here and I am really thrilled to hear your liittle one is keeping with both languages. It was such a challenge for everyone (but us) to keep my DD bilingual. I finally found a ST that back us up.
Do you se LR for encouraging the bilingualism or just for one language?
It will be nice to hear from you and your experience.

11  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Scholarship Program? on: February 12, 2012, 01:05:22 AM

  Hey, thanks again!!!

Grandma is coming over (USA) from Spain in a couple of weeks and she says she will chip in for the computer.
I am so excited about this!!! even when I haven't even been able to run the trial I just feel this is right for Leyla.
  Love, Light and Laughter.

12  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Scholarship Program? on: February 11, 2012, 12:28:14 AM

TmT, I sure appreciate your holding my hand in this because I am not only slow with computers but also usually too tired when I sit down to finally get something done about it.
  Thanks a million!!
13  Parents' Lounge / For Guests - No Membership Required / Re: Mac info please!! on: February 11, 2012, 12:24:42 AM

    Hi Skylark.

Yeap! Bootcamp is what the It people at work said would probably be able to install in mine.
However, I am trying, and close to, convince DH to actually do as you do, get a windows with one and solely function of playing kids educational stuff.
Let's see if I can get an sponsorship with BrillKids. I hear that if your child has SN it is more than likely that I will.
 I hope so!
  Thanks for your input.
14  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: Scholarship Program? on: February 10, 2012, 03:47:31 AM

Thank you so much for making this topic clear.
I am looking forward to my little girl with DS to start on this program. I know she ia a smart pants but she just does not like flash cards that much and she LOVES our computer.

We do have MAc and I have just found out that I won't be able to use our free download because it won't install. So... I am trying to find out more, but if we get the sponsorship we may get a cheap windows just for this.
15  EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Re: down syndrome and little reader program on: February 10, 2012, 03:32:38 AM

Hi My daughter is three and although not very verbal the words that she does pronounce correctly are those who she recognises from story time which has prompt us to look into this program.
