My American husband thinks we have a few good excuses for not teaching our children the Filipino language since one of their parents is American and there are very few Filipinos living in our town who still speak Filipino fluently (me included). I have even met several Fil-Ams who were born & raised in the suburbs by Filipino parents who do not speak nor understand Filipino. I have only been living here for five years but I have already forgotten a lot of Filipino words that is why I am not confident about talking to my children in Filipino. I was hoping there would be other Pinays like me out there who have found other means of exposing their children to the Filipino language.
