EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: please help me. I want to teach my son English but I'm very confused

I was also very reluctant to start the second language. My son is 2 years old. After much thought and much delaying to just start the second language. The reason is because I waited an entire year (since he was one year old) and was only teaching him one language (which was not the language of the country we live in) and only found that this confused him. In the home, we spoke this language and when we left the house, everyone else was speaking English. I recently started the English program and found that it helped him a lot to make sense of the world around him. Things started to click and I believe it was the right decision. We are using the Brill Kids program for both English and the second language which in the beginning might have been a little confusing for him. This is because he would see the same exact picture in one lesson with the word in English and in another lesson it is called something else in a different language. I think (and hope) he will be okay. I think for my situation it is better to teach both languages and hope he picks up as much as possible from both. I already tried delaying teaching the language and this did not work for him. I can tell you that the BrillKids program has improved his spoken language. The changes are subtle, but because I stay with him all day long, I have noticed them. He has said a few new words and tends to babble more. He has only been on the first language for 16 days and the English for 5 days. Good luck to you and I hope it works out for us both.

Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: what diaper brand is best?
|

I know this might be a little off topic but I wanted to post it here because it is a little related to diapers. My child is two years old and not potty trained. I am 39 weeks pregnant so it is becoming harder to squat down and teach potty. I have tried so many things. I tried using the bathroom and demonstrating. I have tried keeping him in underwear with no diaper but he just uses the bathroom on the floor. I tried explaining to him not to do this and to call me when he is ready. I tried taking him to the potty every ten minutes. Nothing seems to be working. He is now at the point where he will call me and say "ka ka" after he already uses the bathroom. If anyone has tips, please help.

Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Importance of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is so important. Unfortunately, I became ill a few months after I had my first child and could only nurse for a few months. I was taking harmful medication and my illness prevented me from continuing. I hope things work out better for us this time around. Good luck to all!

I only made it to thirty six weeks and one day (36, 1) with my first pregnancy. As for this pregnancy, I am thirty nine (39) weeks pregnant and feel nothing. I am a bit worried that I will not go into labor on my own as my first pregnancy resulted in an unwanted c-section. I began drinking red raspberry leaf tea with is supposed to act as a uterine tonic. I felt a change with it, but I could not sleep at night when I drank it. I tried walking more, but it has been difficult because of other responsibilities I have (other children, work in the home). Best of wishes to you all!

Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: When did you start giving solid food and what type?
|
on: December 20, 2014, 03:25:31 AM

Most people I know start giving solid foods at around four to six months. It seems to depend on both the baby and the mother. They usually start with rice cereal (here we tend to use cerelac). Cerelac comes in different steps and flavors that appeal to a baby. They also give mashed fruits like banana, apple, pear and vegetables like carrots. After a few months, when a baby can sit up right and choking is not a concern, I know some people who give small finger foods like cheerios. This helps the baby learn how to hold small things between two fingers (pincer grasp) and to eat on his own.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Computers & iPads for kids. Not a good thing?

Aside from addiction, are the rays from the laptop bad for a baby/toddler's vision? I find that my eyes hurt even after 5-10 minutes of using the laptop. I really worry about my 2 year old about this issue. I am pregnant and due soon and wondering if I should just use the flashcards I made for the first 2 years or the computer program. Thanks!

The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Anyone else's kids not like the phonics portion of Arabic program?
|
on: December 18, 2014, 07:30:51 AM
|
My kids tend to be very engaged during most of the Arabic curriculum. However, once the phonics portion starts, they start playing with each other or with their toys. I suspect it might be because it starts with a single letter and single case ending. Should I just skip the phonics portion or should I keep it? It has gotten to the point where they leave the room when the phonics portion is on. Thanks!
