error when installing updates

Dear KL,
I tried installing the updates to LR, and after following all of the instructions (download software, install, install license, and download content) when I open the new updated LR, an error message pops up saying that the program is unable to open. I tried to uninstall the program, then reinstall it. The original LR worked fine after reinstalling, but when I tried installing the updates again, the same error message popped up, so I am unable to use the program.

Has this happened before? Is there some way to fix it?

Hi,

First, can you install this codec pack:

http://d2.brillkids.com/upload/files/ffdshow-codec-pack.exe

During setup, there will be a page called "Select Additional Tasks", and you will see "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow" and "Decode the following audio formats with ffdshow".  PLEASE CHECK BOTH BOXES.


If that doesn't help, can you reate Diagnostic Report - Windows Start menu, BrillKids, Little Reader, find "Diagnostic" item.  It will also generate a report called "Little_Reader_2009_...zip" in your My Documents\BrillKids\Tools folder.  Attach that here please.

I tried clicking on the link you gave, but it says URL not found.

This was the error report when I opened LR:

Error message: Application needs to terminate. Current media database is incompatible with Little Reader!
Re-installing application may resolve the problem.

Should I go ahead and re-install it, or wait until I can install the codec pack?

Will fix the codec pack link in a while, but that doesn't seem to be your problem anymore.

Looks like somehow your LR did not upgrade properly.

Can you clarify the following:

1. Did you upgrade from v1.2.118 (the last LR version that did not have the Course function and curriculum)?

2. What version are you upgrading to, or when did you download the latest version to try to upgrade?

3. Do you remember what happened during your upgrade process - for example, did it mention that it now needs to import your old database, and ask you to double check that the previous LR is not running, etc.?

4. Can you use your Windows Explorer/My Computer to navigate to ...My Documents\BrillKids\ directory, and tell me whether under that you see "Little Reader", "Little Reader HOME", or both?

5. I'll still need the Diagnostic Report mentioned before. Can you please generate it?

1.It was called LR Home Basic, I bought it in mid-May

2. I downloaded the upgrades last week (I think it was 1.5?)

3. Yes, it did mention that it now needs to import my old database, and asked me to double check that the previous LR is not running. After that it said "finalizing setup" or [something] setup for about 5 minutes, then the window went blank and said 'not responding'.

4. I see Little Reader and Little Reader LITE, although wasn't LITE the Beta testing version?

5. I have created the diagnostic report, but when I try to post with an attachment, the next page says: "error; The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

Thanks. That was very helpful.  Can you help me do one more thing - can you send me your Little Reader.mdb file. You will find it in ... My Documents\BrillKids\Little Reader\Data\ , and it will be called either Little Reader.mdb, or you'll just see it as "Little Reader" with the file type as "Microsoft Database Access File".

The LittleReader.mdb file is only 3.5 MB, but I'm having a hard time attaching or uploading it--this is because my internet connection has been having problems, which is due to get fixed some time this week. I'll let you know once I'm able to upload it.

OK, seems like your database got damaged for some reason (not sure why).

We've fixed it for you - see attached.

Please just replace your existing file with this one and it should work.

Ok I saved it over the original file, and then proceeded to open Little Reader, but an error message popped up again (I clicked for 'crash details' which I'll post below.) Should I reinstall it again before it can work?

OK, can you please upgrade to the latest version of LR (1.5.238).  The best thing would be to uninstall the current version first (you can choose to NOT delete your current libraries - ie., keep them), then install the latest version.
