All, I can now announce with great pleasure that Reading Bear is complete! All 50 presentations are published, and while we still have a few tweaks to make before we start getting really loud about it, it's all there! Here it is: http://www.ReadingBear.org/Thank you all very much for your comments, bug reports, feature requests, and (for about 8-10 of you) volunteer work on the site. For the next month-ish I guess I'll be promoting it, mostly. After that, I'm not sure we're immediately going to develop any more software for it, mostly because we've spent a lot of money on it. I believe I'm going to be free--and assigned--to start churning out more presentations like these ones. I'm also going to make videos of old ones. The idea is that once a very large body of work is prepared, we'll see what we can do about putting it into the Reading Bear format. Frankly, I look forward to spending most of my time simply writing. Who knows--I might be able to develop on the order of thousands of those things, if I'm working on them full-time.

Do you all ask your kids to sound out the words? I never asked H. or E. to sound out the words. I do that for them. Then they put the words together. Soon enough they would skip the sounding out (by me) and read them. E. is 2 years 4 months and is able to read all the Starfall stories fairly fluently (occasionally we'll have to sound out a word) and can read similar paper books. H. was almost exactly on the same level at this age.
If you haven't tried it before, then try it this way: start your child reading flash cards or a book. If there is any hesitation, start sounding out the word yourself, slowly. Then, if the child doesn't come up with the word, sound it out faster. If still no luck, then just tell them the word. Then move on to the next one.
I've read stories like this here before. I really suspect that some parents actually teach their children to sound out, and then their children think that that's what they're supposed to do, i.e., it's part of their assignment. But (obviously) sounding out is just a crutch, and one they should be able to do mentally. So do it for them and get them past it as soon as possible.
Let me know if this works any better...or if you've already tried it without success. Hope this helps.
Jemi...sorry, I haven't revisited the Android flash browser situation in a while. You just need to locate a browser app that enables you to see Flash, and Reading Bear should work (more or less) in it.

I haven't figured this out yet and I went though this with my 6 year old too. My 4 year old is the same except he struggles sounding out the more difficult words due to an articulation delay. He making improvements there but I haven't been through all the presentations with him. He actually reads on starfall well but everywhere else he sounds out and I think on starfall he guessing by context not reading. He made improvements since watching meet the sight words but he only knows the words in the video and there isn't a lot. It is a frustrating stage. I was hoping teaching him to blend smoother since on reading bear there is pauses while they are blending and that affects speed when reading sentences or doing some of the AAS stuff would help but so far no. He so used to sounding out with pauses. My dd got through this phase somehow but it seemed like so much work and I don't know what finally did it. At least I know I am not alone.

You are not alone - my 3 year old is half way through reading bear and does exactly the same - absolutely no sight reading. I had hoped by simply practising over and over he would start remembering whole words but he must have decoded cat hundreds of times and still only knows it if he sounds the individual letters. I had no luck with flashcard reading when he was tiny, either. I am doing flashcard games (eg. find the word/match word and picture) with 4-5 cards out at a time and he guesses by initial sound - he can choose between cat and bat but if there is rat and rub he will only know the answer by sounding out the words. Sorry I can't give you any answers but at least you know it is not entirely unusual. Anyone who has any magic answers would be much appreciated

I have to add our F-A-T story also As we were shopping, a man was walking towards us. When he was about 3 feet in front of us, my daughter says, (in that LOUD tone that only two year olds can just when you don't want them to) "Oh, look Momma! That man has a fat belly, just like Reading Bear!!!!" while pointing at the oncoming man. I think (hope) I saw a faint smile cross his face as he undoubtedly saw a look of horror on my face. We had talked about the fact that just because someone is fat, doesn't mean that we say it out loud. I guess that part of the lesson didn't stick. I did remind her of that fact again! Other than that... we LOVE Reading Bear!!!

I also find it hard to find corresponding readers to go with reading bear. Right now I am using the Don Potter site but it doesn't match up. I think it is a great idea to have readers to go along with it.

Dad Dude, This is SO strange! Spent the weekend online reviewing phonics programs. Found Don Potter's site and blend phonics, downloaded all of his lessons, then on the welltrained mind site, ran across someone talking about "abc the key" which in turn was advertising Reading Bear (huh?) LOL! THEN.... saw a reference to don potter somewhere connected to " reading bear"...double HUH!? So.... I went back to Don's site and THERE IT WAS... Reading Bear! So far, I like RB the most. I have been teaching kids to read for almost 20 years now, but currently have two special needs boys that needed something "else". Okay, so I LOVE the program so far....except.... sorry to be probably the ONLY negative commenter on here about it, but I HAVE to say something about one teeny tiny thing. See if this sounds familiar: "f--a--t.....fat..... The man is very fat....." along with not one, but TWO pictures of fat men's bellies...with NO SHIRT ON.....one side view with his gut hanging down over his belt and one front view...a video of him rubbing his fat gut and jiggling it ever so gently. First of alll.....UGGGH ! Seriously, WHO wants to see THAT!? Second of all, we teach our children that it is not nice to call people f--a---t! Yes, the fact is...some people are....BUT.....still.....it is not OKAY to SAY SO. ! You really couldn't find a fat cat or a fat elephant, pot-bellied pig, or even a fat dog? The dog is very fat. The pot-bellied pig is very fat. The elephant is very fat.The CAT IS VERY FAT? See? Simple. Okay..... I am done. Going back to view the rest of the samples. Maybe we will just skip over f--a--t for now. LOL! Regardless, Reading Bear seems to be really amazing and well done....overall. I am hoping this is the ONLY.... what I consider to be innappropriate....example on there. Thank you for all of your hard work! Sincerely, Denise (aka - Neesy )

Basically, simple cartoons--nothing more fancy than you see on Starfall. They would have to illustrate the sentences very well, so there would have to be that level of detail.
I'm inclined to think we might get help via 99designs or a similar site...right now we're inclined to pursue it, actually. I'm actually at the house of Reading Bear's benefactor. We're going to do a launch party tomorrow at dinnertime. If anybody is in the Memphis area and wants to come, let me know.

The word lists are based 95% on the ones in Flesch's Why Johnny Can't Read, as you probably know if you were on Don Potter's site. In fact, you ought to ask Don himself, as he would be the man to know (I don't myself) and report back here!
One thing we've been thinking about doing next is writing a series of readers, one for each word list in Reading Bear. Don't hold your breath...it would be a huge amount of work.

Thanks evad3 and all of you for your appreciation and encouragement.
Here is the quickly-written text of a possible e-book for Reading Bear. Are there any decent artists here who can work for cheap? Want an illustrating job...again, if you can work for cheap? Seriously.
Here is a text for "short a." It is mostly decodable...it does of course use words like "was," "a," and a few others, but I'm trying to keep the list of such words to a minimum so that it is maximally decodable. In order to keep the story interesting, there will be slides (in parentheses below) in which background is given. These would be read to the child by the software.

The Rat in the Bag ============== Sam was a man. Sam was the dad of Pat. Pat had a rat. The rat was Tam-Tam. (They decided to take a trip to the beach.) Pat and Sam had ham in a bag. (They packed bread and ham for sandwiches.) They had gas in the van. (Then they got in the van and left for the beach!) Sam had a map. (The map told them how to get to the beach.) The map was in his lap. The van ran and ran. (At last, they got to the beach.) Sam had a nap and a tan. (Pat wanted to see the beach.) Pat ran. (While Pat and Sam were gone, the rat climbed into the lunch bag.) The rat sat in the bag. The rat had the ham. (The rat ate up the sandwiches!) Pat was sad. “Tam-Tam!” Pat said. “I am mad. You bad rat!” (Sam got out more bread.) “It is O.K.,” said Sam. Sam had some jam. “Pass the jam!” said Pat. (He made a new jam sandwich.) “Pat,” said Sam, “the rat is fat!” (Then they drove back home.) The rat sat on a mat in the van. Pat sat and had a nap. (Same drove the van home.) The End

My comment is also up on Quora.

Thanks for the reports...any more?
A quick fix, I find, is to quickly refresh the page (not the browser's refresh function, use the "f" key or the Reading Bear browser's refresh button).
In other news: try the iPad app iSwifter. It actually makes Reading Bear work on the iPad, although the quality is hit and miss, I'm finding.

@Korrale4kq, I passed that along to the programmers. Thanks.
Another question for Reading Bear users/testers! If you do use Firefox, are you having any problems using that? I myself can't get it to work in my (updated) version of Firefox! It works useably in Chrome, although the timing is a little off. We're still figuring things out...

We just started using Reading Bear, and we love it!!! She calls all of her teddy bears " Reading Bear" now We have only used it twice, and have not noticed that the audio and text are off. We have a very slow desktop and it seems to be doing fine here in Oregon. Thank you so much for all your work! We appreciate it and have told the local school about it. They are going to use it with some of their students!

Question to everyone: have you noticed, lately (as in the last week or two), a tendency of Reading Bear to be off by a fraction of a second in how the audio and text flashing match up? I have this problem on my desktop machine, but the programmers say it's not a problem for them--but then, they're closer to the server, which I believe is in New Jersey. "Yes, I'm having this problem" would be helpful, but so would "No, I'm not."

My child 3.5 yrs old..recognises capital alphabets very well but not small ones. So can I start up directly with your program or shoul I first teach him recognition of small alphabets..??? But let me tell you one thing...your website is just beyond excellent. And you are doing really great work. YOU are boon for homeschoolers...!! Thanks a ton..!!
Definitely teach recognition of the lowercase letters first. In addition, make sure your child knows the sounds of the consonants as well. The Reading Bear approach is to take things in small, easy, child-friendly steps, and not move on until the previous step has been mastered. If your child can't recognize letters or letter sounds, then I think you'll find Reading Bear a struggle. I'm not saying it would do no good, or that a child couldn't learn the lowercase letters by induction from the many examples in Reading Bear itself, I'm just saying that there are better tools available for learning the more basic steps to reading. All--thanks for your support! It is always much appreciated!

That is the most exciting and awesome news I have heard in a while! My daughter is a fluent reader already, so we haven't used Reading Bear much, but we are HUGE fans of your powerpoint and video presentations. She has watched some of them so many times she has them memorized verbatim. And, I am very much looking forward to using Reading Bear with our next baby! Thank you very much for your hard work and generosity!
