Dear All,

Is anyone familiar with the Dolch Word List (aka Dolch 220 or Sight Words) and using them as flashcards?  I also see that there are phrases on the site which helps with the steps.

http://www.mrsperkins.com/

Thanks.

Hi All,

As I was having a creative/writer's block while planning my lessons and materials ahead of time, I realized that the Doman method is a bascially a children's "learning to read" version of "Magnetic Poetry".  And interestingly enough, among their many themed sets, there are children's versions > http://www.magpo.com/

I then decided to search for various frequently used word-lists in the English language and came across the top 100/500/1,000, etc.  I already have these lists for the Classical Arabic language since my husband is a master of the Arabic language (classical/modern or standard/colloquial or regional dialects).

I was encouraged when I found the English lists broken down by nouns, action verbs, modifiers, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, etc.  And then I was exceedingly happy to find Mrs. Perkins Dolch Words site that is further categorized by school year,  It even has a "phrase generator" using the words.  And she has many books listed that can be used as guideline to create homemade/LR/.ppt presentations.  It basically covers all the steps in "How to Teach Your Baby to Read", which is what I was looking for.  Now, I just have to wait for my supplies to come in and I am ready for both the Arabic and English languages.

Sincerely,
Ayesha

I introduced my daughter to some of these words fairly early on in our reading programme, but find them hard to teach her as very few of them are nouns or even verbs - once I had done a few I could form sentences fairly easily and that is how I keep introducing the same ones now which reinforces them.

But if anyone has a good way to introduce these words and dtill keep it fun I would love to know. My daughter does not have concentration for too many sentences as it is - in fact short phrases are about where she is at (me reading them to her)

The Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme introduces most of these words through the scheme too and it is a very good scheme for teaching children around 2 years of age to read as they are keen on books and can read a book after learning only a few words which are repeated often.

Dear Tanikit,

Did you see these?

http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch-words-nouns.html

http://www.mrsperkins.com/phrases.html

http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch-phrase-generator.html

http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch-readers.html

http://www.mrsperkins.com/resources.html

And I will read up on the LadyBird Key Word readers you mentioned.  I need to keep this process as simple as possible so that I am relaxed and the girls will have fun with the program.

Thanks again.

Hi Everyone,

I am about to begin creating LR categories for the Dolch words resources for:  words, couplets/phrases, sentences, and books.  Does anyone have a preference for the different types of word lists:  by alphabetical order or by frequency?

Words & a Story
http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm

Couplets/Phrases
http://www.mrsperkins.com/phrases.html
http://www.theschoolbell.com/Links/Dolch/Directions/practice_booklets.html

Sentences by Grade in alphabetical order
http://www.msrossbec.com/dolchwb.pdf

Sentences using Dolch Nouns
http://www.learningbooks.net/xDolchnouns.html

Recommended Books using Dolch Words
http://www.mrsperkins.com/activities/dolch_reading_books.html
http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch-readers.html
http://www.englishraven.com/Why_cant_I_fly_100935.pdf
http://www.learningbooks.net/xexcerptsLABDolch.html

Please let me know for the Dolch word listings which you most prefer for LR categories:  alpha or frequency?  And if you want to begin teaching the (Doman Step 01) words before I am able to complete the data entry into LR for the categories and playlists, there are printable flashcards and powerpoint presentations (with audio) by grade here for your convenience:

http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I also found another posting by LuckyLucy in a similar thread, that has a link for high frequency words, that are different from the Dolch words listing; although they also include the listing of Dolch words seperately:

Here is a link to the 600 Fry Instant words, which are the 600 most used words in language.  I guess they are Dolch words.  This same link gives short phrases to teach your children that contain the 600 most commonly used words.  The link to the phrases is at the bottom of the page.  I'm so glad I found this:

I think by the recommended Dolch difficulty level (grade level?) is best.  That is how I tought them to my son and interestingly the difficulty level seems to correlate pretty well with frequency.

I agree with Linzy - I know my daughter already knows all the preprimer, almost all of the primer and some of each of the other categories. Now that she is reading more sentences the words come up naturally and get repeated so often that she easily picks them up.

Another way of teaching these words is just to read stories to your child and point out particular dolch words as you read - there will be many of the words in any story you read. You could ask your child to read some of them to you while you read to them - then you do not have to worry whether you child can read the whole book or not and so these words would be taught during a more fun story time.

Hi there.

Thank you Linzy and Tanikit.  I have created the category lists using words only (no pictures or audio) for the following:

* Full Dolch word list - 220 words (by grade/alpha) & 95 Nouns (alpha)
* Dolch word list by grade/frequency
* (Full) Dolch word list by frequency
* Dolch (couplet/) phrase list (alpha)

from:  1. All Dolch Words On One Page
http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm

* * *

I also set up categories for each grade level using the sentences from
http://www.msrossbec.com/dolchwb.pdf

* * *

A category for the book here, using one sentence per 'word file'/page.

9.   220 Dolch Sight Words in a Story
    (Story shared by Stacie Seuferling - author unknown)
http://www.mrsperkins.com/dolch.htm

* * *

and I will probably create categories for the additional phrases from: http://www.theschoolbell.com/Links/Dolch/Directions/practice_booklets.html

* * *

Then I need to proof the category lists before uploading them.  Are either of you available to help me proof them, please?  And how do I upload the category files?   rolleyes

And for those who want to create daily playlists based on the Doman method schedule for each Step (words, couplets, phrases, sentences) using any of the Dolch words categories listed above, it is automated in a downloadable excel spreadsheet, found as an attachment in Reply #65 from the following thread:

Dear Everyone,

Please find attached the updated schedule for Doman Steps 01 - 03, that I based on Judy Mendes original schedule (Reply #24 > http://forum.brillkids.com/introduce-yourself/hello-everyone-from-judy-mendes/15/ ) and automated by MTB999 and Joha.

As I enter the category lists into the excel spreadsheet for creating my children's daily schedule/playlists, I will upload it to this thread.  Wheww.  One thing at a time.   blush
