Hiiieee Guyyysss.

Well, I have decided on a tailored little organization on teaching reading to my baby. I want some of your adivce and or opinions on it. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Well here goes...

--I will have 8 categories all together:
Colors
Animals
Home
Body Parts
Shapes
Nature
(Haven't decided on the last 2, any ideas?)

--I will start out by showing 3 categories each day, 3 times a day. (EXAMPLE: Colors, Animals, Home, 3 times)

--After 5 days of Colors, Animals, and Home, I will retire one word in each category and  replace it with a new one. (Since that is the general guideline in the Doman method, and seems appropriate)

--In each category (I will have 8 categories), there will be 25 cards. But, I will only show 5 cards from each category. (Animals: 5 cards, Colors: 5 cards, Home: 5 cards. And this will happen 3 times a day.)

--My baby will therefore see the same card 15 times since she will see it 3 times in one day, and after 5 days, one card will be replaced with a new one. (5 days TIMES 3 times a day = 15 times seeing the same card).

Any suggestions? Is there something I should change with this routine?

Also, when should I start bringing out a whole NEW category? Instead of Animals, Colors, and Home, when should I bring in Body Parts? (And the rest of the categories?)

Thanks!  smile

Hi Ammy17,

Doman suggests doing words which relate to the baby - so family members, personal possessions and body parts I think are the 3 suggested early topics.  Colors are mentioned later on after objects in the house & animals.

I don't know if it makes that much of a difference.  I intend on talking lots to my baby when it arrives and teaching body parts/colours/objects/family members etc through semi-multisensory approach (sound, touch +/- sight although their vision won't be so great at the start) until I introduce flash cards at 3 months.  I'd be interested to see what other parents think ...

Dear AmmyM17,

Have you read How to Teach Your Baby to Read, 40th Anniversary Edition by Mr. Glenn Doman?  Chapter 7 explains in detail how to create your materials and the planning/teaching process for Step 1 Individual words through Step 5 Books.

The "categories" are really meant as an organizational/brainstorming tool to help parents create a list of 200 words to start the reading program with.  In the post that Joha recommended to you > http://forum.brillkids.com/general-discussion-b5/daily-schedule-for-reading/msg24679/?topicseen#new is a spreadsheet (modified version) that sets up the daily sets for you and is meant as scheduling tool and guideline for entering sets in Little Reader software.  When you look at the spreadsheet, you will notice that the words get mixed up due to retiring/introducing a word per day in each set after the 6th day.

Please find attached the examples from the guidelines in the Doman book for Step 1 words.  Please remember the overall goal of going from words to sentences/books - and as soon as possible after 18+ months.  It is emphasized to stay out of the trap of becoming get stuck in the details/guidelines/categories for "building vocabulary" for Step 1 and time is wasted before moving on to Step 2 Couplets, Step 3 Phrases, Step 4 Sentences, and Step 5 Books (5 sentences each).

I hope this was helpful for you.

- Ayesha  smile

P.S.  The Reading spreadsheet-modified can also be set up for 3 sets reading per day if you like.  Please let us know what you prefer.  And you may benefit from reviewing another planning spreadsheet for all Doman programs by Mrs. Judy Mendes that is also in the same thread above.

I plan on buying the newer made addition of Glenn Doman's book that you have suggested to to me. But all I really wanted to know was if this routine sounded good? I didn't even get an answer. That's all I wanted to know. All I desired was advice, suggestions, or comments on my routine. I thank you for the suggestion of the book, but I have previously looked into that and am planning to buy it. This forum/website is also continuing to confuse me. I've only been exposed to a couple different ways of teaching reading. I didn't know that it would be okay to use variations of the guidelines and diverse it into all these little complicated ways..

Dear Ammy17,

My apologies for upsetting you, for that was not the intention  Sad .  We are trying to make it easy for you based on experience.  I tried to answer your questions to the best of my abilities; and perhaps someone else can better explain it than I.   unsure

It seems that the confusion stems from the guidelines being flexible and different teaching methodologies that are discussed in the forums.  Have you read the section "Experts" here:  http://www.brillbaby.com/early-learning/baby-intelligence.php

Best Regards,
- Ayesha

Thank you for your help. And, I appreciate what you have given me. I'm still a little wary about the guidelines and things, but I think I've got it down. Cleared things up a bit. Thanks again.

I really liked Judy Mendes spreadsheet. It was rather confusing for me to keep track of the new words in each presentation, so much that I gave up the flashcards altogether. Some because I had not presented the set 3 times a day and others because I had not presented them 5 days in a row. The weekly schedule seemed a lot easier for me, and woks easy with LR

Dear Ammy17,

Is my understanding correct that you have read the book - just an earlier edition of it?

No, I haven't read the earlier addition of the book. I am planning to buy the newer addition of it though. Do you suggest that I read the older version? Or the newer?

Dear AmmyM17,

Ahhh - that it explains it then.  Now I understand why the schedule was overwhelming and confusing for you.  I would humbly recommend that you read the 40th Anniversary edition, as soon as possible.  It is a very easy read and extremely fascinating - at least for me.    And once you read it, the information and schedules that we shared with you will make a lot more sense!

For the time being, you may want to read a short description about the Doman Reading program here - although it is not a substitute for the book!:

http://www.childandme.com/ideas/teach-your-child/read/

Please let us know what we can do to make it easier for you - we have all been through the confusing times - me especially!   rolleyes

We are here to help you.

Thank you so much. Okay, the 40th Anniversary Edition it is. Hopefully it will all be cleared up after I start to read the book. Thanks, again!
