Thank you. DS can blend and he has been through the preschool prep videos and knows those words. I am teaching him the phonograms right now and once he has a certain number down I am going to do spelling from the ayers list with him. He is a very choppy blender and is in that phase where he still is sounding out even simple words. I do reading bear with him but I stopped having him read the words and I do it for him explaining that we are using a phonogram and this is the one. He can read decently on starfall but nowhere else so I have him read there even though I think it is partly guessing from context. He often guesses at words and the word he is replacing it doesn't even resemble the word he is reading.

I plan on starting him on kindergarten math. At the moment we are working with a 100 chart and then I will do skip counting then go on to other kindergarten math stuff. Some of it he can do. I was going to use MEP for both my 4 and 6 year old. I don't have a printer so I need to figure out where to print it out,  I have started going through IXL with them. It doesn't teach me how to teach a concept but it does show me if they know something and give ideas on what I should work on. They use ABCYA too.  I also use marshmallow math for ideas for him and my 2 year old who for right now I am doing little math and teaching her to count objects.

My oldest is not ahead in math at all at the moment but she isn't behind either. She gets the concepts fine but she doesn't just instantly get things. She still needs manipulatives for adding and subtracting. I want her to really understand the concepts but I want to work towards her just knowing it. She was in the sounding out phase for quite a while like her brother and I am wondering if it will be similar with math but hopefully just plugging away she eventually be able to move above grade level.

For intruducing math facts we have addition/subtraction/multiplication/division songs by Kathy Troxel (downloaded from Amazon) which my 3 year old enjoys - he has mastered 1+ and we're almost there on 2+. Just having them on in the background while he plays he is able to instantly answer the questions once mastered. Once he's a little better at listening to instructions, we'll start playing some math-fact games, too.

For your DS, have you tried reading eggs? There is a link in this thread for free 65day trial (thanks Manda!) http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-to-read/try-out-reading-eggs-free/msg96010/?topicseen#new

My son has refused to show sight-word recognition at all, despite lots of programs teaching sightwords since around 12m, and in just one day completed the first 10 lessons (he knew all the phonics that were introduced) and has started reading whole words without sounding out! Not all the time, but we got further towards sight reading today than in the last 2 years  LOL

I have done reading eggs before. Someone found a bunch of codes on another forum to have free access for a while until they caught on that all these people suddenly had years worth of free trials and cancelled it. I wasn't super impressed. DS loved it and DD liked it at the time it but I didn't really see any improvement in their reading abilities. I guess I can try again with ds maybe as a reward for doing other stuff since he liked it.

My DD is 5.4 years and started kindy this year.  She is nowhere near to the level of what kids are on here for reading, level 6 on the PM readers but they use a combination of many other readers as well. She is probably in the top 1/4 in her class, although she is only one of 5 caucasians in a class on 19.   She has a login from school for reading eggs which she finds tedious, but she does login a couple of times a week. My problem is I am not the most patient person in the world or the best teacher and now that her readers are getting a bit more difficult she doesn't want to do her homework.  She is starting to guess words, which drives me crazy.  What can I do so she doesn't guess words? At the moment, I ask her to sound out the word, and when she does this she can work out of the word, but will always guess a "difficult" word. I don't know if she is just being lazy but sometimes her blending leaves a lot to be desired.  What exercises or program can I use for blending?  Reading bear?
Now to maths, she has a login for Mathletics and we are only on level one.  We had a few tears doing subtraction and she really does not seem to grasp a lot of the basic concepts.  What can I do to help her? I was even thinking of resorting to a tutor as we are clashing over this Sad. I do have LM and LR that I am using with my 10 month old DS, but I am just new to this EL stuff and feel like I am failing with my DD.  I've just read that in LM from lesson 46 equations start, so I could start with her there.  Is there blending in LR?  If so, from what lesson?  I really want to see my DD being happy and eager to learn like she was last year.
All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Don't worry mama you can still work with her. When I come here I often feel like I failed my kids too but I am feeling better now that I see progress in my kids even with a much later start. You didn't fail her.

When my now 6 year old was 5 she only had basic reading ability and she wasn't making much progress. Now she is doing much better. My current 4.5 year old isn't just taking to it but I know from perspective now that it will click with him one day. If your dd is in the top of her class she isn't doing bad at all. I used reading bear with my kids and I really liked it. It definitely helped my oldest. I really like reading pathways for the multiple syllable words. DD was struggling with those but is doing a lot better now and we only been working on it a short time. They have pyramids where they break the words up in syllables then we work on spelling the words by breaking them up.

I'm guessing she is guessing because her school uses a lot of sight words. I would get something to just go over the phonics rules with her so she knows them. Reading bear is a good but there is a lot of other stuff out there. I like multi sensory programs but they can be either expensive or difficult to figure out. On sight reading does have a lot of information on it about a multi sensory approach similar to the Spalding method. They sell stuff but you can figure out a lot by just reading there. There was a thread on it earlier. A lot of kids can just get by with simpler instructions though. A lot of parents like the Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. You can see if there are any holes by looking through that. Another technique that is good with older kids is called To, With, By or something like that. Basically You read a short selection twice while she is watching, then you read it together twice and then she reads it by herself. Shared reading is a good technique too. That is where you read together. It helps them practice good reading. That really helped my dd.

With math there are a lot of good curriculums out there. I would pick one and just work through it with her starting with kindergarten if she is struggling. MEP is a free curriculum you can use. I am using Signapore with my kids. C-rods are good manipulatives you can use. You can start working with them with her by by watching the education unboxed videos about them. Both my 4 and 6 year LOVE the MathTacular videos and that has them excited about math. You can use that for ideas on what to work on. IXL.com is a good site that has all the concepts they need in each grade and I use ABCYA.com with my kids sometimes. ABCYA is free. I like the interactive 100 chart because I can color the chart for skip counting then clear it out and work on a skip counting a different number.

Blingmama,

Reading - teaching a 5 year old is frustrating. That is one of the benefits of doing it early. You get to keep your hair color. However, daddude started readingbear.org and that will save you lots of grief. You are not going to make her sound out words and I would start from the beginning. and when she knows the words quickly move on to the next presentation. Easy peasy, no tears. She won't need to guess. After a couple weeks to a month she'll be doing great. Unless there is a skill set missing and then we can talk about that later.

Math - there is a thread on teaching toddlers math http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-math/math-curriculum-for-toddlers/ It has a ton of information. I would also recommend getting the teachers editions of Jump Math, they are free and you can log into their site to get them, but I have all of 1st grade here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/60668524/Jump%20MathTeacher.zip     You do not need to get the program, but the books teach you how to teach math. If she is not "getting it" one way, it will give you 10 other ways to come at it. The program starts at the VERY beginning. I am using it with toddlers.

The other thing I've come across recently is Eclectic Education's Manual of Methods  http://archive.org/details/eclecticmanualof00stew. What I like about it is that it is really Jump Math 150 years ago. It will explain the problems with understanding a child has and how to overcome it. It goes with Ray's Arithmetic but that doesn't mean you have to use it with that. Then I would recommend playing lots of games.  Games that require counting and keeping score. Games where you can compare more and less. Games that you have to use more than one dice.

Dealing with subtraction: get her to count backwards: Use  a 100 number chart and start and 10. Then 15. and what ever number you pick. Then when moving to things like 10 grapes - 5 grapes....she can just count backward 5. Subtraction is just counting backwards she will think it no big deal if she counts backwards A LOT. Also skip counting forward and backward now will help with division later. Solves many issues before they come up. yes

The jump math pdf isn't working. Where can you find it? I'm curios too.

let me check it and repost......it should be a zip file with lots of PDF's

EDIT: Try again. It should open up a window for you to save it to your computer. Then you need to unzip it. You will see all the files. Each section of the teacher's manual is a separate file. The link goes to my dropbox, so it is safe.

If you have more trouble with it, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

I finally figured it out. I was just clinking on the link and it would appear on the bottom of my screen as a zip. It said that there was no program to open it in and I tried pdf but it still didn't work. I just had to put the link in another browser duh.

I did not read the whole thread, however, we also afterschool (if that's what you call it) as well. We homeschooled with many subjects for years, starting from infants. We also planned to homeschool for at least elementary. We moved when my eldest daughter was 4 and found a great Montessori Charter school. We are happy with the decision we to send her to this school. Montessori allows her to move ahead or stay on a subject as long as she feels. Even though she is ahead in many areas she enjoys her class time very much! Seeing as how I have been majorly involved in my children's education since before school, I am the kind of mom to leave their education up to the teacher. We cover the subjects that will be taught in class, as well as keep progressing with the subjects she is ahead in. We also take time on things the class does not in Kindergarten. Such as more history, more geography, different art, more music.

All parents are decided, what field his/ her child go on. So after schooling concentrate our child goal, help to grow up in this field and encourage to do hard word to get our aims but don't give frustration.
