Assalamu Alaykum Brothers & Sisters,

I am so thrilled I found this program, ma sha' Allah! Here is the description by the publisher:

"Juz Ammah Word by Word is a two DVD collection that features a colorful, complete video of Juz Ammah with a visual tajweed filled with a colored images of the Quran Arabic text and film looped tajweed letters. Qari: Sheikh Mohamed S. Minshawi; programmed and compiled by Hussein Haye Nur."

Here is another FREE program ma sha'Allah!  http://www.houseofquran.com/qsys/quranteacher1.html

I just closed the window of the translation (as I want to show my toddler only the text in Arabic) and pressed command+ (ctrl+ for Windows users) and I had a pretty nice display of the Surah!

Here is another program ma sha"Allah to learn not only how to recite the Qur'an (the words appear as they are being recited) but also a very simplified explanation of some short Surahs. There are also some information about isalmic countries, etc. The DVD is part of a series called Zaky. It is actually a cartoon and although I don't like showing that to my toddler, I decided to give it a go as the video is slow paced and I guess he "knows" by now that cartoon is not that real. Another thing that could have been better would be an Arabic version, that's the language I use to teach my son about religion, Arabic culture, EK, etc. There is only the English version.

Here is a brief description from the producer:

In this latest animated film by One 4 Kids, Zaky & his friends from around the world recite one of their favourite surahs and explain what they have learned from it. They also give us some insight about their culture, country and how the Quran plays a big part in their lives. In this first episode we will be visiting Zaky's friends from Pakistan, Lebanon, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh & the USA and learning more about Surahs Al-Asr, Al-Maun, Al-Kawthur, Al-Fil, Quraysh & Al-Humazah. A fun and educational film for all children...and parents!

Written, produced and edited by Subhi Alshaik

Visit Zaky's website: www.one4kids.net

and here is the video:

wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Jazaaki Allahu khaira for these great resources!

I have been creating 'ayah sequencing' activity sets for my children and uploaded files for Juz 'Amma:

http://forum.brillkids.com/aal'rby/ayat-sequencing/

And now that I am working on materials for Juz Qad Sami'ah, the ayat are longer and have 'phrases' within the longer ayat.  Since we memorize phrase by phrase, I wanted to a way to test their memorization of the entire ayah, so I decided to create a different type of sequencing sets.

Attached is a sample for Surah 114 al-Naas.  I cut the text as double rows so that the Arabic text and English translation are together and they have to arrange the ayat in order, and they can also unscramble the words in the ayah, to help reinforce the WFW translations as vocabulary, in addition to making sure they know the last tashkeel of each word.

Please let me know what you think.  I will slowly work on creating sets for Juz 'Amma, Juz Tabaarak, and Juz Qad Sami'ah.  For Juz Qad Sami'ah, I believe that I will use the waqf symbols as the phrase divisions within an ayah; and when Sheikh Hussary (tarteel) recitation stops in the middle of a 'waqf-less' ayah due to breath and/or grammar, I will split the ayah at that point, along with the translation as a 'phrase' within the ayah (if that makes sense).

Baraaka Allahu feek.

as salaam 'alaikum.

SAWRAWB Sister,

Thank you for the links, I bookmarked them to use them when my DS gets a bit older isA.

As for the Ayat sequencing activities you attached, none of them can be opened. But I found them on the other thread you posted sometime ago. So here is my opinion:

- First, that's really an excellent activity, brilliant idea and hard work. Baraka Allahu fiki Sister.
- Second, for the longer Ayat that contains phrases I may suggest using color coded highlighter. That means, the phrases from the same aya will be highlighted with the same color. So basically, the girls will first sort all the phrases by color, then put each group in sequence to get an aya, then sequence the ayat as they did for juz 'Amma. I hope this helps and please let me know if I'm missing anything  rolleyes

As a kind reminder,  big grin  I am ready to help with the Noorani LR files, just let me know and we can discuss about it here or on the phone/ skype...

wa 'alaikum as salaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

Certainly.  Hmmm - maybe attaching as .pdf is easiest and I am glad you could open them on the other thread.

Thank you.  Because the girls are still learning how to write, and get bored with mindless repetition for memorization and review, I created the ayah sequencing activity as a fun and interactive way to review and learn the meanings.  That particular format that is uploaded for Juz 'Amma worked until I began working on Juz Qad Sam'ia and the ayat are longer.  I also found it a little confusing to figure out which part of the translation belonged to which part of the Arabic ayat, hence creating a new format to include the phrases.  And I am using Hussary tarteel as the audio 'standard', but when comparing his recitation (which tends to be longer than most) to Shiekh Minshawi or Abdul Basit or Sheikh Ismail, ra; it really changes the meanings depending on where they stop either due to grammar or breath, which is so intriguing to me, and reinforced the concept of splitting the ayah by phrase, which is also how we memorize longer ayat.  I think I will use the longest ayat in the mushaaf, Baqara 002:282 (page 48 in the madinah mushaaf) as a 'test' to see how to do this:

http://publications-img.qurancomplex.gov.sa/?p=17&imagewidth=550&mushaf_gotopageno=48

I have been wondering how to arrange the various parts of the activity.  I have been keeping the cut up ayah sequencing in a ziploc bag for each surah.  And for the newer format that can be used for either ayat, or phrases, or words, I am unsure how to group them and the color coding for phrases is a good idea that I will play around with.  I will continue with the new format for Juz 'Amma and Juz Tabaarak, by working on a page a day, insha'Allah; and once I complete it, I will resume with Juz Qad Sami'ah flashcards, ayah cards, and the sequencing activities, insha'Allah.

I was originally inspired by the concept of 'Magnetic Poetry', but it is too expensive to create an Qur'anic version:

http://magneticpoetry.com/

And I am still research how to create a Qur'anic online version that is similar to the Qur'aan Memory Game in the previous post:

http://magneticpoetry.com/play/

And then I came across another great Montessori resource for learning English that reinforced my ideas.  The ayah sequencing is based on this product:

http://www.readskill.com/Products/Comprehension/505SentenceSequencing.htm:

If you have any ideas on how to create the format for a Qur'anic paragraph/theme sequencing, based on this product:

http://www.readskill.com/Products/Comprehension/515ParagraphSequencing.htm

And I intend to use this great .pdf for the 'paragraph sequencing':

http://www.understandquran.com/fileadmin/user_upload/courses/full/english/complete_surah_%20contents.pdf

and there is a slightly more detailed version online, by the same author, that can be seen in the margins of the translation:

http://al-quraan.org/read-quran-online-c-4.html

For the time being, I am just including the .pdf information, as a last 'row' in the new ayah scramble format.

The scrambled ayat are based on magnetic poetry and this product:

http://www.readskill.com/Products/ScrambledSentences/

And a few months ago, I saw this 'Hifz Nation game show' that uses the same concept:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/BJGTPwKIarQ&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/BJGTPwKIarQ&rel=1</a>

My intentions are to make learning the Qur'aan fun and interactive for my children, until they are old enough to write out their own lessons; unless they want me to continue with this format.   rolleyes   I will complete the WFW flashcards, ayah cards, and sequencing activities for the last three ajzaa' as a minimum, and am considering it for Juz 26 & 27, and maybe through Surah Yaa Seen.

With regard to the Noorani, it was completed sometime ago, and I am still waiting for Sheikh ar-Ra'ee to allow me to upload the files to LR.  You could contact him through http://nooranilearningcenter.blogspot.com/ to request his approval, and perhaps it will help persuade him?   big grin

Jazaaki Allahu khaira.

as salaam 'alaikum,
Ayesha

Hmmm - seems I am beginning to have 'production' anxiety.   wacko

I am now wondering if I should create seperate documents for each type of activity:  ayat sequencing, phrase sequencing, ayat scramble, and the paragraph/theme sequencing?

For the latest format, I was just doing it all together in one document.

Also, I am wondering about the size of the fonts for both the Arabic text which is currently at 30 pt., which is about the same as the images from the ayah sequencing; and it is also the same as the size of this handwritten script in this publication:

http://www.qurancomplex.org/contest/Preview.asp?l=eng&PrizeID=134&PrizesCategories=1&CatLang=0&Page=1

And the English text for the ayah sequencing is at 15 pt, and for the ayah scramble, the English text for the ayah translation is currently 13 point, and the WFW translation is at 11 pt (to fit into the boxes).

And that is another issue also, for the size of the WFW ayah scramble boxes, should it be based on size of word (and what if the translation is longer and wraps to 2 lines; should the size of the WFW English translation be smaller to fit on 1 line, or the word box longer?; or should I just split the text into equal sized cells with 5 or 7 maximum per row?)  The current size of the WFW are smaller than:

http://www.amazon.com/Really-Big-Words-Magnetic-Poetry/dp/1890560391

and larger than:

http://magneticpoetry.com/product/first-words/

Yet, I wonder if it is too small for younger children?  My children are older now, and learned English using YBCR and Doman methods via LR beginning at 18 months.  They began Noorani in the Doman format and schedule beginning at 2 years and 4 months.  I still make the Qur'anic WFW flashcards that are very large (set up as Doman sized cards at 6" x 11" landscape) and ayah cards (set up as Doman sized cards at 6" x 22") to enable them to see the words easily on the computer, and then they can sight read from any sized 'Uthmani script mushaaf very easily, masha'Allah.

I also wish I could print them on a card stock and laminate them, similar to product by  Learning Roots "What to Say When" du'a cards:

http://www.learningroots.com/new/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=33&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=80

The ReadSkill.com products are on card stock and a heavy laminate at 4mm which is professional, but the du'a cards are thinner and the laminate is thinner.

What do you think?   confused

SAWRAWB Sister,

I am sorry for the late reply, I kinda lost the thread and had to search it on the forum.

I understand the dilemma these files are causing. Here are some of my suggestions and I hope they will help:

- Concerning the font size: you may choose what's best by trial and error. Try to print the same file in different sizes and ask the Girls what they prefer. Also, I think using the biggest font possible may be better. For example, my toddler gets big font words much easier (although this may not be that sensitive with older kids)

- Also, try to keep it simple for the ayah sequencing. You may structure the game according to difficulty levels. The girls will start by sequencing phrases into ayaat, then words into phrases, then words into phrases into ayaat.

 - I would group the phrases by grammar/ meaning rather than following the breath of the qarii. This will reinforce reading comprehension too, and you can explain why the qaari stopped in the middle of the phrase.
Otherwise, how was the color coding so far? Same with size, I think trial and error would help choosing what's best for the girls.

- Concerning the presentation of the cards, card stock is more than enough. Lamination would be an overkill IMHO especially that they are "big girls" now ma sha' Allah. I have been making laminated fleschcards to my toddler and it is really hard work. Unless you have enough time LOL ...

Please let me know if I missed any of your questions smile

as salaam 'alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh,

No problem.  Alhamdulillah for the search feature!  yes

Thank you for the review and suggestions.  And with regard to the waqf based on Hussary's pauses - the professional Qur'aa also study grammar and tafseer in depth, so when they stop, it is based on grammar.  An example can be seen with this long ayat in Surah 061 al-Saaf:

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad. But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)

And the word for word translation is here, on pages 780 - 782:
http://understandquran.com/fileadmin/user_upload/vocabulary/translation/english/28-780-786.pdf

The suggested waqf is:

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.

and it continues:

فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿٦﴾

But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)

However, when listening to Sheikh Hussary's tarteel (who has a long breath to begin with, masha'Allah), he breaks it into the following:

وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَ ٰٓءِيلَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me,

and then he repeats a little and then continues to the suggested waqf, based on grammar:

 مُّصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى ٱسْمُهُۥٓ أَحْمَدُ ۖ

confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.

and then he continues to the end:

 فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿٦﴾

But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)

This is an example of why I am breaking the ayah up into the 'nested phrases' within the suggested waqf of an ayah.  And the professional Qur'aa are able to make their own waqf because of a very deep undestanding of the texts.  A perfect example is by listening to the late Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, he subtely changes the meaning, or gives emphasis to a phrase, by variations of starts and stops.

Baraaka Allahu feek.

as salaam 'alaikum,

Ayesha

P.S.  Minshawi tarteel is the same waqf as Hussary tarteel.  However, al-'Afasy continues to the 1st suggested waqf (and does not break it into two phrases, as does Hussary and Minshawi), and he recites the rest of the ayah to the end.

By contrast, Abdul-Basit stops at a different place altogether in the 1st part of the ayah:

وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَ ٰٓءِيلَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًۭا

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming

 مُّصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى ٱسْمُهُۥٓ أَحْمَدُ ۖ

confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.

 فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿٦﴾

But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)

Ghamdi stops at the same place as Abdul-Basit, but begins from another place:

وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَ ٰٓءِيلَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًۭا

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming

 رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى

I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me,

 وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى ٱسْمُهُۥٓ أَحْمَدُ ۖ

and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.

 فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿٦﴾

But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)

* * *

and al-Hudhaifi recites it as does Hussary and Minshawi.

So, you can see that each reciter may begin, pause, and stop differently - all based on grammar, and wanting to put emphasis on certain aspects.  Since I use Hussary tarteel as the 'learning recitation' and for memorization, I use Hussary's stops.  I hope that makes sense.  smile

And for contrast, please listen to Sheikh Mustafa Ismail:

وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَ ٰٓءِيلَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ

And (remember) when 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger

 وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍۢ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى ٱسْمُهُۥٓ أَحْمَدُ ۖ

and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.

 فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ﴿٦﴾

But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic." (6)
