Well, sort of... smile

Some of you may know that we have started working on a Little Reader iPad app.  There's not much to say about this as it's still in a fluid state right now, and I can't answer you regarding what features it will have in the first version cos I'm not sure myself!

The bad news is, it won't be ready anytime soon.

The good news is, you can use Little Reader on your iPad right now!!

I'm guessing some of you might be looking a little like this:  wacko or this:  blink right now...  laugh

The reason you can use Little Reader on your iPad today is that there's this fantastic app I recently discovered, called "Splashtop Remote".

Splashtop Remote basically allows you to access and control your desktop computer from your iPad.  That means, you can access Little Reader using your iPad (with all the features and functions), and play it back exactly as you see it on your computer, the only real difference being the size of the screen and that you use your fingers instead of your mouse to control it.

Yes, there are other remote-access programs around (most notably TeamViewer), but the key reasons Splashtop works the best for playing back Little Reader are:

- it is dedicated towards accessing your computer over the same wifi network (which basically means you're in the same house/room as the computer), and not over the internet.  The upside of this is that there is very little lag, and it's very easy to set up.  If you have a good wifi setup and don't use it too far away from the computer, then it's very responsive.

- it gives you sound! Sound from your PC is channeled to the iPad, and this is something most (if not all?) remote programs do not do.

Right now, I often run my Little Reader lessons using the iPad on a couch near the PC, and Felicity often presses the screen herself to advance slides.

BTW, Splashtop is also great for watching movies, flash videos etc that are on your computer.  Splashtop can also be set up to work long-distance over the internet, but it's not easy to set up, and the lag is too great to make it useful for playing back LR.

You can learn more about Splashtop here:

http://www.splashtop.com/remote

To get this set up, download "Splashtop Remote" from the App Store, and the PC desktop client from the website. Regarding the app, try out the free version first to make sure it works properly.  If it does, the full app is just 99 cents.

Of course, you will need:

- Little Reader (doh!  smile )
- Wifi router

So there! Little Reader on the iPad, today!  Let me know what you guys think after trying it out!

KL

EDIT - If you are not hearing your PC's sound on your iPad, then try this:

- On your PC, open up Splashtop software and click on Settings.

- You should see the second item says, "When a remote client connects, redirect all sound to the client, and mute this computer".  Make sure this is checked.

================
EDIT - 5 June 2012
Little Reader Touch for iPad/iPhone now available:
http://forum.brillkids.com/announcements/little-reader-touch-now-available-on-the-app-store!

Download full curricula:
http://forum.brillkids.com/announcements/little-reader-curricula-on-your-ipad-or-iphone-now-possible-with-iaccess!/

================
EDIT - 29 November 2012

Added reference in the title to Android also, as you could also use Splashtop on your Android device.

================
EDIT - 03 June 2014

Although Little Math and Little Musician were not mentioned here, note that you CAN use the same Splashtop Remote workaround above for Little Math and Little Musician. Aside from setting up Splashtop Remote and your Wifi router, you will need to install Little Musician and/or Little Math on your PC.

i have yet to try this option out, but thanks for making it available already!!!
we are having some problems showing things on the ipad because my daughter has discovered the games and just wants to close and open things the whole time, not paying any attention to what i am trying to show her. it's too bad there isn't a close screen option.
thanks again,
liza

It is great to know that LR will be available on Ipad - for those who have used it - does the smaller screen make a difference?

Love it.  My daughter used Little Reader all cuddled up with her blanket and the iPad in a  large leather chair.

my question is, for those of you using the ipad, how do you get it away from those little hands? plus, how do you stop them from closing things all over the place. my daughter constantly closes all the apps and when it's time to say good bye to the thing, there is instant drama. any help?

I would like to know if apart from showing the brill kids software we are required to show flash cards. I find many moms showing flash cards to check understanding of children. will children never use to seeing a flash card react differently to Flash cards. what advantages would showing flash cards have. Will their learning be different. Would appreciate if you can help me

Hi Lizaveta,
I sort all the appis into folders. So if my child want to click open something i will have time to stop him. My hand will usually cover the round button that will close the programme. For games I am quite alright if he wants to change to another one himself. Usually I will pass the Ipad and let hih explore himself. If I would like to show him flash cards, I will have control of the Ipad. Hold it some distance away and told him that now is mommy's turn to tap the screen or something.

Hope this helps!

thanks luckymummy,
i have tried to explain to my daughter that as soon as the flashcards are over, we can see something else, but she doesn't seem to want to understand that and cries every time i put them on. as soon as she has the ipad in her hands, she is happy. but when it's time to take it away - major drama. today, i went back to the pc where it is easier to control things. maybe when she is older i will try the ipad once more, hopefully then it won't cause me such a headache.

I've been using Splashtop for this exact thing and it works very well. Just wish it was better not over the same wifi connection. The smaller screen doesn't matter because everything just shrinks to size.

to lizaveta: I downloaded a program called alpha baby. There's one for the computer, ipad and iphone. If one of my devices is going to be out of my hands directly and Avery might get into it, I just make sure Alpha baby is on. Then she can bang away on the screen/keyboard with no chance of getting out of alpha baby and it teaches her letters/numbers/shapes/colors and you can add your own images and record you voice to describe what the picture is. Avery loves it and it finally saves me from having apps deleted/things renamed etc. You should check it out...

Wow, Arminta. It sounds just like the thing for us. I'll be checking this Alpha baby thing right away. Thanks so much for your suggestion. Hope it works since it was getting to the point that I felt I was traumatizing my child with the learning - not the desired effect at all.
Thanks,
Liza

Check out this new app called ChoiceBoard Maker on iPad. My nephew created it for my son who is disabled. It allows you to create your own customized choice boards, so you can use this tool to check their word recognition easily.  Oh, in order to present the choices, they have to be an image file. So I use Doodle Buddy (another cool app) to type text, zoom to appropriate size, choose the color of the font (i prefer red) and save it in the image library.  Then, set it up on ChoiceBoard Maker using those words. It took less than a minute to set up a set of 10 words. And it will applaud if your kids point at the right answer.  What's more, it's free! Have fun!

Running ipad apps on PC?  Probably can be done with an emulator (I'm sure there are some), but these are probably made for developers and not straightforward to set up.  Also, without the touch sensitivity element, probably defeats the purpose for most apps.

The ipad is a wonderful tool for many things, including educational.  The great thing is that it is TACTILE.  But then, the problem is that it's tactile, so some apps might not be so suitable for babies if bashing on the screen would mess up what you're trying to show your baby!

Hmm... we might have to develop a feature just for this, where we 'lock up' the whole screen and only allow touch on a small dedicated area of the screen to advance the slides.
