** EDIT: We've recently changed our foundation name to the Early Education for Every Child Foundation (EEECF). **

Do you love Little Reader? Are you looking for a way to give back and help others? Then this is the opportunity for YOU!

The Early Education for Every Child Foundation is seeking independent volunteers to help spread the word about early learning.

"What is this opportunity about?"

The Early Education for Every Child Foundation (EEECF) is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to sharing early literacy opportunities with underprivileged children. We provide in-kind software grants to schools, day cares, social service organizations, and orphanages in need around the world. Our Foundation also offers individual software sponsorship to families that fall within certain income guidelines or have children with special needs. We do not want a single child with a legitimate need for our programs to go without!

"Why do you need my help?"

We need your help identifying people and organizations in your local community who can benefit from using Little Reader. If every parent on the BrillKids Forum helped us reach just one child or group in need, imagine all of the lives that could be changed through early literacy!

"What would I have to do?"

We'd love for you to contribute as much as you are able! For some people, that may simply be raising awareness by referring people and organizations to the BrillKids Foundation website. But ideally, we are seeking committed individuals to serve as local guides who walk recipients through the application process from start to finish. Determine what groups or individuals in your community can benefit from using Little Reader.

Reach out by making a phone call or sending an email, and ideally arranging a meeting.
Meet face to face to explain the EEECF grant process and give a live demonstration of Little Reader.
Encourage the group or individual to fill out a grant application, even helping them complete and submit it, if necessary.
Communicate with other EEECF Team members regarding the status of their application.
Assist recipients with software installation to the best of your ability; refer them to our tech support forum as appropriate.
Help recipients become comfortable using Little Reader using hands-on instruction and directing them to online tutorials.
Collect testimonials in the form of photos, videos, or letters to be posted on the EEECF website (www.eeecf.org).
Touch base with the program from time to time to encourage them and answer any questions.

And that's all! We will even provide the all of the necessary materials and information; you need only share it with prospective recipients and follow the step-by-step process.

"What kinds of groups and individuals qualify to receive grants and sponsorship, who should I be trying to reach?"

Institutions and individual families can qualify for grants or sponsorship based on several factors, so take the following into consideration when identifying potential recipients.

      1)   Institutional Use - We primarily aim to help institutions serving low-income children and those with Special Needs. Preschools, elementary schools, daycares, orphanages, libraries, community centers, and similar facilities in need are eligible to receive grants specifically for institutional use.

      2)   Documented Financial Hardship - Families with documented financial hardship can apply for individual sponsorship. Applicants must provide a statement of why they feel BrillKids programs will be beneficial to their family and provide an overview of their current financial situation. Acceptable documents to verify low income status may include paystubs, unemployment benefits, food, healthcare, or housing assistance paperwork, and other similar documentation.

      3)   Documented Special Needs- Families of children with special needs can apply for individual sponsorship. Applicants must provide a statement of why they feel BrillKids programs will be beneficial to their child along with documentation verifying their child’s condition. Acceptable documents may include a letter from their doctor or similar medical paperwork showing a diagnosis. Special Needs sponsorships may fully or partially fund the purchase of BrillKids software, as each family’s financial situation is taken into consideration, as well.
Are you the parent of a child in need? Visit www.eeecf.org and click “Sponsorship” to apply. Please note that retroactive sponsorships are not available at this time.

"I want to help out but I don’t have any experience with this sort of thing. Do I even qualify to volunteer?"

Relevant experience helps of course, but it’s not necessary as long as you are willing to learn! However, volunteers must:

       Have experience using Little Reader.
       Have excellent communication skills.
Respect the privacy of sensitive information.
Represent the EEECF positively and professionally at all times.
Sincerely desire to help others and be motivated to jump right in!

"What’s in it for me?"

This is an unpaid volunteer position, but some of the perks for dedicated, long-term volunteers are entitled to:

       Printable EEECF Volunteer business cards
An official “EEECF Volunteer” Forum badge in your signature
Access to the exclusive EEECF Volunteer board on the Forum
The honor and privilege of helping change the lives of children through early literacy!

Interested in volunteering? Just private message Skylark/TeachingMyToddlers expressing that you want to join us. You can also post general questions and responses in this thread. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Volunteer with the Early Education for Every Child Foundation (EEECF)

Does the sponsorship apply to any country?
How many hours are you expecting a volunteer to commit?
How familiar does one have to be with LR?  Must that person know how to make content or have made content?

Khatty,

Thank you for asking!

Does the sponsorship apply to any country?

Yes, BrillKids Foundation Educational Grants apply to any country. However you might want to take into consideration the languages used in the country and languages of curriculum.

While LR can be used as ESL early learning tool, it probably would be more looked for and desired in the countries where English, Mandarin or French (next language to be released) are one of the country's languages.

Lets take Africa for example. While there are dozen of languages used there, in most countries either English or French are one of the official languages, which are important for education and used among population. Same goes for India, where English is widely used. So orphanages, community centers and kindergartens there are excellent target recipients for LR with English curriculum.

But every situation is different, and we have received requests from Eastern Europe NGOs working with orphans, who are using LR English curriculum to teach orphans English, since that increases their chances for adoption to English speaking countries, or increasing their chances for better education in the future. In other words, opportunities might arise even in the countries where we would not expect it at first. And therefore BrillKids Sponsorships are open for every eligible project, institution or individual in any country.

How many hours are you expecting a volunteer to commit?  That depends on an individual. We want you to be comfortable with your commitment. And it is up to you to decide how much time would you like to invest. Ideally we want you to be able to identify a few potential institutions or individuals, introduce Little Reader and concepts of Early Education to them and help them through Grant application process, with possible occasional follow up to see how they are doing. For some it would mean a few referrals a week, for others -- a few referrals a year. Let us know how much you would be able to commit. And you probably would have a better idea how involved you would like or can be after you tried volunteering and have a better understanding how would it practically apply in your situation.

You can chose your level of commitment and you can definitely adjust it over time as well. Perhaps you would like to start with simply spreading the word about BrillKids Foundation and Little Reader at first everywhere you go. Or, possibly, taking just one project and leading it through the Grant process. Or deciding to dedicate 1 week of your vacation to full time volunteering. Or 1 day a week. Any of these and more are workable options!

How familiar does one have to be with LR?  Must that person know how to make content or have made content?  If you have used LR with your own children and passionate enough to want to share it with others, you have what it takes! Knowledge of content making is not a must, but knowledge of LR functionality and its versatile use will be helpful in demonstrating it to potential Grant recipients.

Hope these answers were helpful  and please do let us know if you have any further questions and ideas!

Thank you for considering sharing the gift of early learning with at least one other child. Imagine what a chain reaction that has a potential to start!

After becoming a volunteer, you may want to learn more about making content, downloading new files, etc, in order to become more effective in teaching other organizations those same skills.  I will be more than happy to direct you to tutorials and walk you through the process personally via Skype as my time permits. We will help train you if that's what you need! So, while it's helpful to be familiar with the in's and out's of Little Reader, knowledge can be gained and we can help you become more comfortable with those sorts of things, so don't let it stop you! smile

I will PM with my interest.  I'm wondering, though, if you've considered providing free copies of LR/LM/etc. to volunteers.  I didn't see mention of this in the "What's in it for me?" section, but it seems like it'd be a good incentive.

Hi hypnicjerk, sorry about the confusion! The "questions" that you were asking about is a typo, and we've just edited the post.

To volunteer, all you need to do is PM Skylark or TeachingMyToddlers to tell them that you want to join! To quickly PM both of them, just click on the "Volunteer with the BrillKids Foundation" link at the end of Lappy's post above. smile

Hypnicjerk, I totally overlooked this question!

I guess, one of the reasons it was not mentioned is because this specific announcement was addressing parents who have used Little Reader/Little Math learning systems with their children already and have experienced first hand benefits of it. Specifically, giving parents on BrillKids forum a chance to be a part of Foundation mission of providing an opportunity of an " early education to every child".

I realize that we might get volunteer applications from people, who do not have much ( if any) experience with Little Reader or any other Early Learning products. But who sincerely want to make a difference in their part of the world through identifying the need and providing early learning opportunities to the children.  Perhaps they already involved in an active volunteer work, and realizing the difference early learning can bring to communities.. We will do everything within our power to equip them with tools, support and training for the job.

We also had another type of situations, where NGOs or schools, serving children in need, would approach us, not knowing much about the early literacy program we were offering, but simply knowing that there were some educational Grants available. We would encourage them to take a free full functional trial first, and evaluate how the program would fit in what they already doing. If they felt it was something that would work for them and they would be able and willing to implement them, they were able to get 100% free copies of the Little reader and Little Math to use with their children.

As an Early Literacy Foundation, we are looking for every opportunity to make early learning accessible and affordable by all children, and especially underprivileged. Giving them the gift of early literacy we may equip them with tools to bring changes into their own communities, opportunities to succeed academically later on in life and break the cycle of poverty they were born into.

Ah!  Your response makes perfect sense, Skylark.  Maybe I'll jump on board with what DannyandAmy said, then: how 'bout offering LMs (when it's released), Little Chinese, or other extras to volunteers?

Hi! I am from Vietnam the country which people not speak English. I am wordering if I could teach my baby using LR which mean I can customize the software so that I can teach her both English and Vietnamese.

In Vietnam, we also know about Early Learning and seem everyone interest in Early Education for their children. I may be a volunteer but if the languge can be both vietnamese and English then this LR can be good tool to teach our children here.

Hi!

I work with a lot of organizations involved in children's mental health, family support for children with special needs, early childhood development, and education.  I would be glad to share about your products.

I was wondering if your team (board, marketing, etc.) has some scripts, handouts and/or PowerPoint slideshows for volunteers to get started with.

Also, if a family is experiencing hardship and qualifies for discount, are they eligible to be volunteers as well?

Hi teachinmybaby! We are working on some of those very things right now, and yes, families who receive services can also volunteer. Check your private messages for a brief questionnaire to complete. smile
