At what age would you recommend beginning the program with children? I have a very musically inclined 24 month old and was wondering when you thought she might be ready.

I am reposting an answer (modified for you) as this is a question we get quite a bit in this forum. The game can be played by anyone that knows their colors. As for your 2 year old, I would use "Free Play" mode where the hitting the keys generate the game objects, so no matter what they hit they are seeing results. It is also a great way to help teach her the colors, if she doesn't know them yet, but we have seen lots of 2 year olds playing the game, and anything that gets them having fun on the piano at that age and getting to know the keyboard is great.
I found this video online, and though he is not using the correct fingerings yet (in the game and the videos when he is ready) you can see he "gets it" and is enjoying himself on his first song. What a great way to start your music studies.

So, my opinion is that your daughter is probably ready or nearly ready to start, I believe their minds are growing so fast at this age that music can only help them and delight them. I personally love that age, their personality begins to emerge, they walk and talk, and now can begin to play music!

So far all of our updates have been free updates, but if we come out with a new version there may be a nominal charge, say $19.95 or $29.95 to upgrade, but that is 6 months to a year away at best.

Dear Cris,
Just quickly three questions:
1) you wrote this 4 months ago - any news on when a new version will come out?
2) In an attempt to save the shipping costs to Europe - why isn´t it possible to download the software like Brillkids offer it with LR?
3) Do you know from the top of your head how much a Yamaha midi cable might be approximately?

I answered the question on the new version in another post, but will repeat it here. It will be nearly a year at least before we have a new version of the Academy, and we will have an upgrade path to upgrade the software only when it arrives, so I would not wait on that. The current version is the one receiving all the great reviews, awards, etc.

We have to ship the DVDs and sheet music and color coded stickers anyways, so downloadable versions don't really deliver the full punch of the program.

As for the Yamaha cable, it ranges from $40 to $60 US. Double check that your Yamaha keyboard isn't using a type 1 to type 2 USB cable, (like for a printer) lots of the new ones do, it is only older models that still need the conversion from MIDI to USB adapter.

Question. Do you have to have the keyboard to play the game?
We have a keyboard, though not one you can hook up to a computer.

Yes, the keyboard is the whole point of the game, that they learn a real skill and can play real music. They learn by doing, it is not abstract or theory based. You can either purchase a keyboard separately or we can include one. The one we include is an M-Audio MIDI controller, 49 full size keys (4 octaves) that is powered by the USB cord, fairly lightweight and easy to put in front of the computer and take away. These are available in Mac stores and music stores, and online, and if you are shipping overseas it is usually more cost efficient to get the keyboard locally rather than pay to have it shipped with the Academy. If you go through the links there is a video that shows all that you get with the system, that should give you some perspective.
