Hi i was just wondering how many people are from South Australia who are teaching their babies reading and maths?

Are any of you considering home schooling?

Thanks smile

Just thought that I'd at that the reason I was asking is that I have been moving around Adelaide a lot and going to a lot of playgroups and i have never heard of anyone teaching their baby to read before apart from just reading them lots of stories.

Actually being able to show them words and then have them recognize those words is all new to me.

When i tell my friends with babies that i am teaching my daughter to read they just look at me in disbelief, or worse still call me a bad mother because i'm not letting my baby just be a baby.

She still gets play time and her 'lessons' wouldnt take up any more than an hour or even half an hour a day.

So just really wondering what other people's opinions were about this?

Hi Rose08

I to am teaching my baby to read and i plan on adding maths later. I have not really discussed this with anyone, although I have mentoned it in my mum's group. and I am lending them the YBCR dvd's because most of us have seen the adds on Kerry-Anne so therefore are more confortable with the concept. Other than that I have not discussed any other methods such as Glenn Doman, Schichida etc.

I also take my daughter to Gymabaroo where making sure babies follow there right neurological brain functions is taught. It is very GD without most people realising (even the instructors) and it is hugely beneficial for babies.

I'm in Adelaide to. Where abouts are you? If you want someone to talk to about all this stuff feel free to PM me.

Also my husband and I have decided not to discuss what we are doing with other's at this point of time. Most people know we are doing YBCR and baby sign language and think it is cute.

I have decided not to home school purely for finacial reasons because I have to work to keep a roof over our heads. My husband and I are planning to send Sophia and the next child when it comes along to the Hills Montessori School in Aldgate.

Hope this helps

I live in Murray Bridge at the moment as we have just bought a house, but was living in noarlunga as well as up at seaton. I currently go to a mums group in the city and a learning together playgroup here.

Where is Gymbaroo held? I have heard it mentioned several times in this forum.

Thanks for your input, its great to know that there are other mums out there in my area doing this.

Hope to keep chatting and getting to know you better smile

I live in Coromandel Valley so im not too far from you.

Gymbaroo is held at St. Coloumbus church on cross roads. It is held on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Saturdays and Mondays thursday and friday at Mawson Lakes.

The cross road one is the closest for you.

Hope to keep chatting to its nice to have a fellow South Aussie to chat to.

Im so glad im not the only one from SA anymore.

Where abouts are you mtb999?

I don't really know the difference between gymabaroo and kindergym because I could not get Sophia into kindergym as there was a waiting list!!!!

Gymbaroo teaches you how to follow the babies neurological progression and teaches you exercises which help with the baby's brain development. You can start both once bubba is 6 weeks old.

Thanks for that. I have been meaning to look it up but havent got around to it as my daughter has stopped sleeping at the moment which means not many breaks for me. smile

I have also looked at Gymbaroo, i would like to start going but do you have to ring up and book?

Which session do you go to? Or would you be in a different one as your child is younger?

Thanks for the help smile

Hi rose08,

Yes you do have to ring up and book. The first session is free so that is good. I go at 12pm on wednesdays and Sophia is in the moving babies class. If your little one is not walking yet but is definetly moving that's the class you will be in. If she is walking then you will be in an earlier class, but if you talk to Anne about it (lady who owns Gymabaroo) she will help you.

Hi ladies,
I just wanted to introduce myself here too as I'm also an Adelaide mum.  I live in Kensington and am mum to 3 kids - 2 boys and my darling little girl.  I've only just come across this website.  I've been busy in the last few days and haven't really had the time to look around it a lot.  I'm feeling overwhelmed and just need the time to sit down and read through all the information.  Someone else told me about the baby survival kit and I will look at that when I have the time.  I also have the YBCR dvd's.  I tried to use them with the boys, but they used to distract each other too much and weren't all that interested.  I really should pull them out for Lexi to look at too - actually I'm not working tomorrow, so I might do it then.  I work as a speech pathologist in the education department, so the stuff I do with my kids at home is very literacy based (particularly reading).
I've actually got a migraine coming on at the moment and I'm having trouble reading through what I've written, so sorry if it doesn't make sense.
cheers, Simone  smile

Hi daisyno2,

Welcome to the forum.  I too am an Adelaide (very new) mum!  What is "the baby survival kit"?  There's a lot of information on the website - I'll be interested to learn how Lexi goes with watching YBCR, and to hear more about what you do with your kids at home!

I am in kensington too and only v.new to all this. Do libraries tend to have the YBCR items or do we have to purchase them all?

hello maree and daisyno2.

It is great to see so many Adelaideans on this forum, all I can say is yeah

It can be a bit overwhelming to know where to start. I personally would always start with teaching bubs to read (if past 3 months) because it is the foundation of all learning.

Marie, I have not seen any YBCR in the local libraries, sorry to say. Sad. Do you have any friends with the dvd's? It does get expensive doesn't it?

Any time you need to ask any questions just drop me a line.
