Hi StaceyCanada.
I'm khatty from a small town is SK about 2 hours from Saskatoon.
Where are the rest of the Canadians???

What teaching ideas have you been trying?
How have you been finding the support/lack of support of your teaching ideas?

I am mostly a closet parent.  I am still breastfeeding my 17 month old.  I have practiced elimination communication since my daughter was 5 weeks old.  I started working on the early education just before she turned a year old.  Unfortunately, this town is stuck in at least the 1970s and I feel very alone in my parenting.

I have told almost noone except my partner about the reading and math games because I feel very judged.

I started with Doman flash cards and I recently purchased the YBCR program.  I am also doing the Doman Math Dot Cards.  We have fun playing these games, but I haven't tested her and she has yet to really indicate that she knows any of it.  I am waiting patiently, if slightly unmotivated.

StaceyCanada,  I just noticed our dds are almost the same age. When you did you start with a reading or math program?  I started dd just before her first birthday.

I also notice you are posting at what must be 4am ish in Ontario?  It is 2am here, I just put dd back to sleep, but I can't seem to fall asleep myself tonight.  I might try some toast and milk soon.

I would be interested in hearing more of your ideas.

Yep I am awake at 4am. I just got dd to sleep for some reason she didn't want to sleep at all tonight despite being really tired.

I started math with her first about 6 months ago but wasn't consistant at all so we are starting again. We have also introduced Continents, some animal bits cards and reading. She is loving it. She is starting to recognize and say some of the words, and said Asia when I showed her the continent today.

I am so happy! Dh is thrilled that I am teaching her.

What method(s) are you using to teach math?

I am using Doman dots that I made myself, but I find I can only flash them for 2-3 days and then have to put them away for week.  She seems to get really bored of them really quickly.  I try to alternate the YBCR flashcards, with homemade Doman words, and the homemade Doman dots.

How are your finding the support in your community?

We are using the Doman method for math and reading. She loves the dot cards and words but I think I  will increase the font on her word cards. She seems to always want to hold them up to her face. Like an old person who can't see well.

We are getting the Your baby can read video's. We have several Signing time video's and I would like to try the Little reader and little math programs. I am working on getting them free.

My dd is also still breastfeeding at 17months (as we speak).

I have found the response of my teaching her mixed. Luckily my dh was all for it because he see's how my 10yr old is struggling with reading and math. My inlaws thought I was nuts to want to teach a baby. Now that she is signing, reading and recognizing continents they think it's fantastic.

I don't really have any friends in town here (I'm working on that) so I can't comment on other people's responses.

What program or programs are you using?

How has your response been to teaching your daughter?

Hi StaceyCanada,
I am from Saskatoon, SK.  I think that it is great that your dd is learning how to read.  I am trying to teach my 4 1/2 year old, but I find it hard to find the time as she is so busy with other things.  I wish that I had known about this program when my children were younger.

StaceyCanada,

I made my own Doman flashcards, both words and dots.  Then I also purchased the YBCR program.  I also show her powerpoint presentations from this website.  I have also started making her own books with 4-5 words per sentence.  I so far haven't seen any concrete proof that she can read anything.  I ofter wonder if this is even working, but then I read this forum and think it will happen if I just keep it up.

dd is pretty interested in the reading, she doesn't seem to get too bored of any of it.  She really loves teh YBCR sliding flashcards and always wants more of those.

The math is a little sketchy this week.  She seemed to be really bored of it last week, so I put it away for a few days.  I just brought the dot cards back out but she still wouldn't look at them.  I tried the dot cards on the computer and still no luck.  I am wondering if the Little Math program would make a difference?

Community support in SK seems tough to find, as do attachment parenting families.

Do you have a Le Leche League group around you? I have found more open minded parents there with regards to attached parenting.

Maybe you could offer a class in early learning at a mom's and tot's group? You might find some like minded mom's that way.

I have made my own cards as well and just purchased the little reader and little math. We have the signing time, preschool prep sight words and YBCR dvd's and dd loves them all.

Hi
I am in Canada too and I live in Vancouver in British Columbia.  I moved here from Hong Kong when I was a teenager!
I have started Doman Math and Words for my first baby who is now 28-month old, but I can't keep it up because I returned to work after one year!  I found it hard to keep it when I am working.  I am now on my mat leave with my second baby who is 5-month old (girl again :p).  I have started the math 2 weeks ago but not very consistent.  But I start working on it daily starting this week and I will continue with her because I found out that she is very excited when I showed her the dot cards!  I will do the word card as well!  Hopefully I can keep it up this time!

I am in Canada too. Funny so many from SK, as I grew up in Saskatoon and Regina. I am in Montreal now.

I found this site through looking for teaching Chinese to kids sites. I didn’t do any small baby stuff, first as my son was adopted at 22mos, and also I just found this site now. He is now 3.5 yrs old.

People here mostly think I’m crazy for teaching him three languages (English which is my native language, French which is the majority language in Quebec, and Mandarin as it was his native language). I’m learning Mandarin, so we get a lot out of dvds, books, flashcards etc together. I stay a step ahead of him so I can point things out and say them in Chinese. Ie he learned colors first in English, then French (he goes to French daycare 2.5 days a week) and now Mandarin. I am working on reading easy picturebooks to him in Mandarin right now.

I also did Signing Time with him (Baby ST first) when he first got home from China: it was fantastic as he took a long time to speak intelligibly at all. Again, everyone thought I was insane: “how will he learn to speak English and French if you sign with him?” Of course all the Signing material speaks the words out loud, so he learned a lot of English vocab like that, including his colors.

Glad to see other Canadians here (and Saskatchewanians at that!)

I am from Ontario Canada... and looking for other "Doman-ites"  smile  My son is 11 months old and I've been using Glen Doman's teaching methods since he was 6 months old.  I would love to hear about anyone else's experiences.

Hi there, I'm from Toronto. My baby loves YBCR. However, I'm not consistent too in using the Doman's dot cards because I can feel that he's bored when I'm showing the dots to him.Any advice on how I can make the dot cards more interesting for him
