Just be aware that many contraceptives do NOT prevent Conception but are actually "abortifacients"... as in, you get fertilized, embryo grows and embeds in the uterus wall, then aborts. True!! The IUD is the worst of them all... babies grow around this metal coil and just get mashed basically, like growing around a potato masher. Not great for those that somehow survive long enough for the IUD to be pulled out...I'm sure that would have some effect on them phsically, mentally, intellectually.
And the mini-pill, any anything progesterone only actually work this way, the same way as the morning after...baby is conceived, but the environment in the womb becomes hostile and unfavourable to the continuing embryo, the wall sheds it's lining (like a period) and sheds the baby.
I learned all this after I took the morning after pill on the assuredness by the doctor that it prevented CONCEPTION. That's how I lost my eldest child...july 19th 1993, conceived june 23rd 93. The doctor's idea of conception was not mine (which was fertilization, the sperm meeting the egg)...hers was a continuing embedded embryo. Why didnt she make that clear?? I'd have just happily had a baby if I knew I was going to impregnate and then abort!!!!
I'll NEVER get over it, and years later I'm still ANGRY.
Now I hear of something called a marina... I'll have to read up on that. I've also read about babies that have been aborted but survived, but with lame legs etc from the abortion process. That is sad. It's more then sad, it's totally unnecessary and avoidable.

Hi Nikita
I think you mean Mirena - it's what I'm using now.
It's an intrauterine system, and works by secreting hormones (at a dosage hundreds of times lower than the pill). My doctor told me it's much better than an IUD, which works by irritating the womb (yuck!).
This is indeed contraception; no morning-after stuff:
"It is thought that the small amounts of levonorgestrel that are released by Mirena make your cervical mucus thick and tacky. This is why sperms are immobilized and can't enter the uterus. And the thinning of the uterus is why you may have less menstrual bleeding over time. In fact, about 20% of women will have no period after one year, a safe (and, for most women, preferred) condition."
I've been using it since November last year. I haven't had a period since giving birth in September, but I have no idea whether that's because I'm breastfeeding or because of Mirena (maybe a bit of both?). Anyway, it's a nice bonus!

Strange considering the topic I was discussing, but I'm on a oestrogen/progesterone combination pill (Monofeme) as I dont trust the others (progesterone only like mini-pill and Depo Provera) not to let me get pregnant and abort....
I'm due to take my new months pill starting today that being Saturday. Meaning I then finish my period, the period I should be having right now, but arent. If I was on contraceptive that stopped me getting a period altogether, I wouldnt suspect I might be pregnant, and thus choose NOT to start my next lot of pills but instead hurry up and get the folic acid and multivitamins I wasn't taking down my throat in mega doses and start eating healthy as I'd been mostly eating chocolate the last few weeks. It could be just late due to I'm a bit fluey...will let you know...

I'm also using the Mirena. I used it after my second child and went 5 years with no period. Then when I decided to go for child number 3 I pulled it out and was pregnant in 5 months. No problems or concerns. I decided after number 3 came along that I only wanted to use Mirena again. So nice, with no periods you forget it is even there. I've had no cramping or any other side effects. (wow, I think I can make a commercial!)

I have not gotten on birth control b/c I am breastfeeding and I don't want my son to get those hormones. Is this lower hormones than the mini pills that they give you if you're breastfeeding? Is it something that they put in at the doctor?
I suppose I could google it, but I figured I would ask actual users first!

Yes, from what I understand it is even less than the mini-pill. I'm also breastfeeding and didn't want to take the mini-pill. I put it off until DD was 4 months old and decided not to take anymore chances.
They do put it in at the doctor. You can check with your insurance to see if it is covered. My insurance did not cover it (around $600) so I went to a womens clinic and had it put in there, by a doctor, for much less. It only takes 30 seconds or less to put in.

I didnt use anything after my kids were just born, no mini pill...I just used condoms or checked for fertile mucus. And I cant breastfeed so the minipill thing was purely cos I didnt want to risk the uterine lining expeling any fertilized embryos I didnt know about. Recognising fertile mucus is very reliable... in fact I used a condom when Azaria was conceived, because I was starting to get fertile mucus. Condom failed!! Sperm succeeded! Now here I am, using contraception... and looks like it failed again! In fact I thought I saw fertile mucus but ignored it cos I was on the pill!! Then had a little bleed for a wipe or 2, probably implantation bleed! I actually felt suspicious then, so I stopped drinking coffee, but didnt start the folic acid etc until the period didnt arrive... because I felt safe... I've never had a problem with this pill before, even when not taking it religiously at the same time every day. Took a preg test yesterday (friday)... meant to show you're preg 5 days BEFORE a missed period, but in my experience, no matter what improvements are made, all my babies have shown up on DAY 5 of the new cycle. In fact, old tests will show up positive on Day 5!!! (with Azaria I did a few tests, one on Day 4 was negative, but on Day 5 when a new test was positive, I looked at the old test and it had turned positive overnight!!). I also suspect pregnancy because my earliest physical symptoms with Azaria, prior to missing a period and during the missed period was conjunctivitis and slight head/cold/flu. Which I've had the last few days. Funny, cos if I wasnt using contraception, and just avoided things when I was fertile, I wouldnt be pregnant. You know what, I love contraception....the ones I've used!!

Alas, I am disappointed to announced my period arrived. No baby this month. I was getting all excited about the idea. I was researching on the net before and found that with my type of pill it doesnt work properly if the user uses alot of caffeine and nicotine. That explains it...I've been drinking heaps of coffee and eating alot of chocolate. Which makes me feel distrusting of my contraception... should I just use the rhythm method. I looked up mirena before on the net and there was conflicting stuff on it....but I wouldnt feel comfortable using it. Decisions decisions...decisions to make today, Day 1 of the new tablet cycle.
Oh well, at least I get the option now to actually try for a boy, to try for twins, and to save money on all the folic acid, iron and prgnancy gold tablets I was going to buy today.

I have another question about Mirena. I called my doctor office and set an appointment for September, but the nurse said I had to be on my cycle when it's inserted. Were you guys on your period? And since I'm breastfeeding, I don't have periods. So I don't know if they'll still be able to do it?

Oh no, you don't have to be on you period to have it inserted. I was breastfeeding too and not cycling yet. But..................they say you have to practice some sort of birth control for the month prior. They'll ask you if you have and if not they will put it off for another month. They, the doctors office, must be confusing it with something else. This was my second time having one inserted and diffinately was not cycling during either.

I think it says on their web site that it doesn't cause weight gain.

No problems here with weight gain or mood swings. I can't say I have had any side effects. Every once in a blue moon I may feel slight cramping, but nothing like I had with my reg. cycle.
