just wondering if its still safe to have babies after 30?

There is a high risk of genetic abnormalities if you have children after 35. It goes higher as you get older.

I was very tired during my 1st trimester and don't know if I could have done a 9-5 at that time. But then, I've always had unusual work schedules/environments.
I'm a single mom, and wanted to be the one to raise my child, so I had to do some regrouping work-wise. I now focus on writing and take editing and transcribing jobs to keep me in wolf food... Things are tight financially, but I'm used to that and always manage to find a way to keep going. Not that it wouldn't be delightful not to have worry quite so much about the financial end of things! Just wait till I sell that screenplay!
Marina's never been a great sleeper and neither am I, so I have to sneak work in. It's a bit easier now because she finally started taking afternoon naps about six months ago.

While it's true that the risk of abnormalities is higher after 35, there are many other risk factors as well. I used to work with kids with special needs and every single mother was in her twenties when she conceived. Conversely, I know a number of women that got pregnant after 35 and none of them experienced genetic issues. Nothing clinical in this, I know, just my experience.

I'll start you off... I'm 38.  Had my first child at 25, my latest at 37.  Hope to keep breeding until my very last egg! (I always wanted a big family... I've seen big families and I envy how happy and loving they are, and how many cousins they produce!!!) I look forward to menopause with loathing!!

I am 37 (38 at the end of March). I had my first child at 20, my second child at 25, and my third child at 34. My children are 18, 12, and 3.

Hi,
I was beginning to feel like I was some sort of geriatric here  smile  with everyone thinking being a mum in their 30's was old, 'til I read LongTallDrink's post. At last, someone who had their daughter at the same age (almost exactly) as me! Iona was born when I was 41 1/2, and she's 10 months old now. We're still hoping to give her a brother or sister, 'though we understand it might not happen now, but having had older parents myself (Mum was 40 1/2 when she had me) I know how important siblings are when you're still young(ish) when your parents die. It would have been nice, maybe, to be younger parents, but David and I only met when we were 37.

Anyway, like someone said, I think I've got more patience now than I would have had when I was younger. I'm also happy to have given up work now, too, as I've been working in the field for 17 years, so I don't feel like I'm missing out as I might have done if I'd been younger. Overall, I'm really enjoying being an older mum.

Married at 26.  Had my son at 27, one month away from turning 28.  My son just turned 9 months old a couple days ago.  I think you can still have another child.  Yes, like the others said there are ricks involved.  A sibling would be great.  Good Luck! nowink

Well I'm 39 now and 26 weeks pregnant with number 5.  Had a bloodtest, and ultrasound (nuchal translucency test) for Down's syndrome, and Edward's syndrome, and they say I'm low risk of age related abnormalities. My partner is alot younger than me, and I think that's why babies seem to be so healthy. Apparently older dad's have been found to produce lower IQ babies, but apart from genetic abnormalites, older mother's dont produce lower IQ babies themselves, just when partnered with older fathers. Which could explain why it's hardest for 2 older people to conceive together. It's nature's way of keeping the population healthy. Sad though for those couples.

I'd not heard that, but I had heard that older fathers had an increased risk of a child with autism as a latest theory. My husband's just a few months younger than me, but so far Iona seems fine.

Hello Everyone!

I'm 31 and I had my daughter when I was 30. She is 3 and a half months old. Honestly I never thought I was going to enjoy mothehood so much. I guess God knew better. We definetly want to have a second child and we would like to have them close in age. My brother and I are 7 years apart and it was a dissaster! Growig up we never got along because we were in different stages of our lives. Now, he is 23 and we have a great relationship, but it took about 20 yrs to get there. I have to say because of him I can't see my daughter without a sibling.

Regarding moms that had their kids when they were young, I say you go girls!  smile My mom had me when she was 16 (needless to say it was not a planned pregnancy) I know it was hard on her and I appreaciate all the sacrifices she made to raise me well. I know it is not the ideal situation, but it has her positive sides like having a great relationship. I love my mom still young and has a full life ahead of her. I guess she will just now do somethings I did before I had my baby.

And for the ones that waited a bit longer, I say, we go girls!  LOL  As everyting it has it positives and negatives, but all of us are trying to do what is best for our kids. That is why we are in this website right?

Cheers to all of us!  yes

I'm 30, had my son at 25 and my daughter 10 days before I turned 30. Motherhood has been fun for me, but I think this is it though! maybe I'll chnage my mind later!
