I searched for the subject of my posting but did not come up with anything.  There may be a posting already for this but I did not search through the may pages of various formula or feeding responses.

I was wondering if anyone else has made their own baby formula and what their experience has been.

I have been using this recipe with my son for over a year and he loves it.
The reason I started making my own formula was because my son was out eating me (beastfeeding) and I needed to supplement.  I started using commerical formulas but wanted to see what my alternatives were and behold I found this.  It is super easy to make and I feel good about it being so-called "natural".

My son is a tank, in his build and he is only two.

This is new to me as well, but very interesting. I have enough milk for my son 5 times over LOL , but If I ever needed to supplement I would definitely look into making my own smile

That is interesting, I am breastfeeding but it is interesting to know that you can make formula yourself.
I wonder how many people would go to all the effort though  LOL

There's a liver based formula...  ohmy

I think it's great that you make your own formula. Commercially prepared anything, I think, isn't always in our best interest. However, I always chicken out doing things like that because I fear I would mess it up and do it wrong and cause more harm then good.

Obviously feeding is a personal choice and it's one I thought about for a while. I also thought it was a lot of work and that I wasn't able to do because of one thing or another, but my husband encourage me to try it and if it didn't work out so be it.  I bought all the products which in the initial purchase seemed like alot but they last for a good while.  The whole milk supply fluctuates depending on how he is growing and so forth but it has worked out better than I thought.

I just wanted to post these great video  links that talk about Raw milk which is not to be cofused with organic there is a difference.  Again feeding is a choice but it is important we educated ourselves to both side of the milk story, just like in an discussion.  I did not have a clue that raw milk was available but one thing led to another and here we are.

Enjoy

wow, i never knew we can make our own formula.. anyway, we need to make sure those whole milk is from a reliable source before we make our own formula.  Else, better to buy it from the shelf.  I guess we cannot be 100% sure, can we?

I have never been able to breastfeed, but I do know in Australia the child welfare watches you closely when you've just had a baby, even coming to your house daily in the form of domiciliary midwives and maternal health workers. With my last I went on Domperidone to try to bring in breast-milk, and was under strict instructions by the lactation consultant NOT to supplementary feed with formula to try to bring in milk. Day 5 I was told by the visiting domiciliary midwife if I did not put her on the bottle by the next day there would be TROUBLE, and she would be back to see me the next day, a sunday, which necessitated me signing a form to authorise her to get funding for working on a sunday. They dont normally do house calls on a sunday, but I was a special case. So I gave up and used a bottle. But I would NOT ever consider using my own home-made formula, as they are so picky here that would be grounds for taking children off you. Seriously, they want to know everything...what formula you use, how much they drink in a day, and you dare not swap formula as they really get narky about changing brands. (So you tell them what they want to hear).

TO NIKITA:" in Australia the child welfare watches you closely"
Do you live in Australia?   Wow! I am sorry that happened to you.  We, as moms, put enough press on ourselves we surely don't need the extra "help"  : Sad
I can't believe that!!!!!!!!!!!  I am thankful we still have such freedoms here in the US, I just hope they stay that way.  ohmy

Yeah they do. They even looked in my kitchen cupboard to ensure I really did have a tin of formula in there!! I had 3 tins, so that was good. Yesterday I bought 11 tins for the new baby (Partially hydrolysed for high allergy infants), which were not being stocked anymore, so reduced from $26 to $10 a tin. And 4 toddler Gold tins, as they were that much off also. So let them look in my cupboard this time!! I started to get post-natal depression because of their attitudes, as my determination to try to breastfeed was so strong, I was taking the medicines and naturopathic pills to bring in milk, but the decision was taken away from me. They insisted I brought her to the Maternal Health care centre more often than normal, to re-assure themselves she was gaining weight. I can tell you I started crying in there, told the nurse it was their fault people got post-natal, and stormed out. I really believe that. They acted like I was deliberately starving my baby. As I said to her, I have 3 others and they arent dead!! If they start on me this time I'll be threatening them with legal action.

(be warned - my r  and t keys stick, so there may be a few type-o's)

Wow, it sounds just left of socialism in Australia. How nasty! In reply to this, I was searching for "breast feeding) because there is a bill that will be going before Congress to allow mothers to take breaks to pump for their infants when they return to work. . .
http://momsrising.democracyinaction.org/o/1768/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=27279

I have been using Weston Price's goat milk formula, modified since my first (now 25 mos.) was 4 months old. I started out wanting to nurse exclusively, but my supply was very low. I was so devastated because I had read about the benefits and the downfalls of formula.... Anyways, my son was 9lbs. 8oz. and had a need to be nourished. I started using formula, along with nursing- did it til' he weaned himself at 6 mos.- he was colicky and cranky, had horrible gas and spit up constantly. He also had a greyish hue under his eyes which I see on kids all the time and immediately recognize a formula baby. My mom had raised us on home formula made from evaporated milk, very common in olden days, but although that helped him fill up, he did not stop being gassy, uncomfortable, and spitty. It was bad. I did all kinds of research, and even spoke with Dr. Mercola and a place in Utah, and goat milk was recommended. The Am Academy of Pediatrics stated that babies would have renal and kidney failure, as well as possible dehydration... that happened in the 30's if not enough water was given to the infant, as there is little or no water in the formula, naturally, issues would arise... I was scared, but after 3 days of goat milk, he blossomed. His color changed, he became a happy, attentive baby, and he grew 4 sizes in a month. He is 2 now and is yep, built like a tank. He is in size 5T and pediatrician always says that if all his kids were as healthy as he and my daughter are, he could retire in good
conscience.

My daughter was born 1 month premature at 7 lbs. 12 oz. and I tried nursing once a again, but her mouth was very small and it was hard to get her latched. Also, the lactation consultant doesn't tell you, but too little food makes for jaundice. The pediatrician said, feed her or there will be trouble. So I had my mom make the formula and bing it to the hospital, and yup, you guessed it.... the nurses though I was loopy... i sopped immediately. She is 11 mos. old and super-strong. I give them both high-quality supplements and they glow.

At some point, I read that kidney failure could occur, no now, bu some time in the future, although no studies were performed, and that in old days, if no wet-nurse was around, people would just let their infants die, although there is direct reference in the bible and Greek mythology about feeding babies milk.

About goat's milk. I was alergic to everything soon after birth. Gassy, colic, cranky.  No breast feeding even though my mom had plenty. At that time there wasn't formula for a case like mine. My mom had to feed me goats milk formula. It was the only thing I could eat and it worked wonderfully. I quickly gained weight, and stoped having digestive problems.
I'm not sure I would ever use anything else other than goats milk formula if my babies ever needed a supliment or replacement to breast milk. But I'm the old fashioned kind.
If I knew people who'd made their own formula using the ingredients from that link I may be inclined to try it, but as of yet I still feel that tried and true is best.

By the way, I had slow developing kindeys till adulthood. As a child I wet the bed. Perhaps it can be atributed to having been on goats milk formula. I have no problems now even after 3 kids  LOL

I my son was premature, he weighed 5.6 lbs.  he looked like a little tiny thing.  I did nurse him but it seems like my production was low and I personally decided to go ahead and make the leap of making my own.  Like  a previous Poster, meandlinc , my son is now two and he is a tank.  He also in in a size five and just a solid little guy with hockey thighs big grin , we are a hockey family Wink
I wish I had started the formula with my first child also but, I won't hesitate with child #three.

"The Am Academy of Pediatrics stated that babies would have renal and kidney failure, as well as possible dehydration... that happened in the 30's if not enough water was given to the infant, as there is little or no water in the formula, naturally, issues would arise... ,"

I am not sure but I think the goats milk is made similar to the organic milk formula, in which water is add, so the AMP, is wrong on that one huh .
