What did you do to select your child's name?

We used to talk about baby names here and there and one day I asked my husband what he thought about Valerie and he really liked it. Then we picked a short middle name "Ann" which happens to be the middle name of all the oldest girls on my mother-in-law's family. So it worked out great! we had also picked a name for boys in cse it was a boy, but now I'm not so sure in case we have a boy the second time around. We would see...

We both wrote down all the names we could think of, and then compared lists. As soon as one of us did not like a name, it was crossed out. We thought of names which could be pronounced easily internationally and which did not have too strong a link to a specific language or country. Then we checked whether it worked with the last name (very important; and initials as well) Finally we repeated the name over and over again.

I'm Gabriel's mommy!

My son's dad said he liked the name Gabriel and always wanted to give a boy that name. I liked it too. I said I wanted my dad's name to be his middle name. There was much debate over girl names. He didn't like anything I liked.

I have baby name books for reference and there are some great online baby name sites. I think you should like the sound of it, make sure it sounds good with the last name, and like the meaning.

We were looking at uncommon names, but which have a good meaning. There were only a couple of names that my hubby and I liked unanimously...so of the two, we chose the one that was rare.

My first baby was chosen based on the name Paul, something similar to that and found a good one in the name´s book. My second baby we chose based on a girl who was my student and she is very polite, kind, etc. We liked her and her name so we decided after reading the meaning too.

One things that we felt was important was to wait until we met our babies before giving them names.  We took a list to the hospital, but made sure it suited our child first.

Well for my little princess, we actually "created" a new name for her. During our honeymoon in Europe, we like Geneva and we try to modify the name and have my little princess called Genaeve. The problem with the new name that we created is that most of the people don't know how to pronounce it. So it took us quite some times to explain to the teachers and friends but we are happy that people taking the effort to ask about the name and the way how to pronounce it.  To have a unique name, people will pay more attention to them and there are seldom replication between friends and family and most importantly, it's a meaningful name to both u and your baby.  yes

We went through quite the process.  After scouring the internet, baby books and authors (we have an entire wall in our livingroom that is a bookshelf) we each came up with our lists. I combined them, sorted them by syllables and typed out two lists.  For the last 3 months before my son was born (we knew it would be a boy) we would look at the list every Sunday.  My husband would have his, I would have mine.  We'd rate each name with either "like", "dislike", or "I'd be okay with this".  My husband would give me his list and the following Monday I would take off all the dislikes from both of our lists and print out two new lists for the next Sunday.  We eventually narrowed down our list of over 60 to about 5 or 6.  Then two weeks before he was born we made our decision.  His first name means "little gift from God" and his second and third names are versions of his two grandfathers.

I was going to add this the other day but forgot....

My SIL and BIL named their child by trying out "scoldings".  "Mary Lou, your homework is not going to do itself!"  "Sarah Ann, did a hurricane run through your room?"  "Vicky Lynn, eat your greens!"

I wouldn't necessarily suggest this method...my niece only got her name 6 days after coming home from the hospital!  (But it does work well with a reprimand!)
