They're meant to be cut into strips across.  Then you can fold it so that the word is on one side and the picture on the other.  Show the word, then the picture.  Later, if you DON'T glue the folded paper together, you can cut down the fold and play a match up game with your child.

No problem.  My son is not interested in flashcards anymore so I am using the words and pictures to make word wheels for him to spin.  So when he spins to "man" he can lift the flap and he'll see DadDude's picture of Einstein, when he spins it to "pan" he'll see a pan under the flap, etc.  Hopefully that will keep him interested for a while smile

What a great idea Kizudo.  Mine are not interested in the flashcards anymore either so I'm trying out books.  I just made the first one and will see if they are interested after a few days.  So far it is working but maybe it is just the newness.  If it doesn't work out I can always try cutting them up and making a game too.  If it does continue to hold their interest I will be making more books to share.

The book is organized with 4 rhyming words per page (lad, glad, sad, dad.)  My kids are old enough that they are pointing to text (one started at 14 months and the other at 22 months) so I don't think I need to break them down into bits of information as a flash card would do.  Plus by grouping them with similar words it will help the kids see a pattern.

Someone asked me what my word wheel looks like.  Here it is.  It's a little rough, but it will do.  I'm planning on changing the word families by just sticking on a new label with the new ending and then making a new "insert" circle with the first letters and pictures.  That way I can use the wheel more often.

I just used an old cereal box but reinforced the handle with two popsicle sticks and a second strip of cardboard, then wrapped it with masking tape.  I probably could have made it prettier...maybe next time smile

Dad dude, thank you for making the Fleschcards. Karma to you!

I need some advice please:

I just made the first batch of Fleschcards for my son- and he loved them- loved holding them and looking at them that is smile I read the words as instructed and then showed him the pictures. After showing them to him 2 times, he started showing me the picture and telling me what word it is- just like the EK cards.

I broke a rule by starting these cards with him when he knows about 2/3 or 3/4 of his letter sounds. I think we are supposed to start these when he knows all the sounds. But I was impatient and just wanted to see what happens when we do these cards, since he knew the sounds of the letters in most of the words. I wanted to show him where we use the sounds we learnt.

Should I continue doing these cards with him or is it too early?

Making cards without the pictures will be a big risk since he loves books and cards with pictures.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Shaman

Shaman, I'm sure (having read all the creative things people are doing with these!) I don't know everything that can be done with these cards.  It certainly doesn't hurt if your son is naming the things in the pictures, I'd say.  Good vocabulary practice.

If he knows 2/3 of his letter sounds, he's almost there.  At least, it didn't take my boy long to fill in the gaps.  We finished the job with the LeapFrog Alphabet Bus (there are many other electronic toys that help with this, to say nothing of apps and Starfall's ABCs page) and also refrigerator magnets.  Of course, keep reading alphabet books too, he needs reinforcement for everything.

But if you followed my practice of sounding out the words letter by letter first slowly, then faster, then blending the sounds together slowly, and finally prompting your child to say the word at regular speed--well, I am sure your child will quickly pick up any missing letter sounds.  If your boy is game, I'd try teaching him the rest of the letter sounds and the cards as well.

What I would really like to know is if anyone uses them the way I used them, viz., sounded them out for the child, then prompted the child to put them together--and if, after that, the child learned to sound out the words silently himself.  I know a lot of people have been using these cards with one-year-olds, and it might be difficult to do this at that age.

Now I'm starting it all over again with E. (my second), who just turned four months.  The interesting news here is that, as I carefully watch his eyes when we look at the iPad (up close, so he can see it easily), I notice him looking back and forth between words and pictures.  He looks at words with great interest.  On screens with both words and pictures on them, he even seems to be looking at the words more than he does the pictures.

It occurred to me that this is pretty close to the sort of early work I did with H. (my first), although we did that work with board books and commercial baby flash cards, which are fine, but not as good as Doman cards, or the ones available for the iPad, or the ones I've made.  But I do remember running my fingers under the words when he was a baby, and then pointing to the pictures.  One big difference between H.'s environment and E.'s is that the house was quiet when H. was in babyhood, but with H. being four and all, E. is constantly hearing prattling and conversation when he's awake (and often when he's asleep).

In other news, I'm designing an early reading survey--have been working on it all week while I wait for the coding on Reader to get started in earnest.  First of its kind, that I know of.  When I have a more advanced draft, I will post it for you all to comment on/add to/edit.  This will ask detailed questions about use of all major methods and products, as well as about how people have done with various skills.  I'm really REALLY curious about the results.  I will specifically be asking for people who have NOT had good luck with YBCR/Doman; I want to know what works and what does NOT.

Hi DadDude
Could you please confirm if the Fleschcards are now available on the ipad / iphone?  If so, how do we find them?
Thanks in advance - I'm really looking forward to using these and I be extra keen to use them electronically if possible.

Thanks DadDude. I will keep doing the cards with him and try your technique (sounding out each word and blending it)- will let you know how it goes.

The survey you are working on sounds very interesting....I know its early but I had to write something....please try to keep it both subjective and objective, otherwise the companies making these educational products will use it for their benefit and parents who do not understand that these things work best when there is parental involvement will just put on the DVD's and expect magic. I am saying this from a recent experience with a friend who asked me about what I was using with my child ... and after she bought it, expected her child to learn everything by himself and later told me....'that thing you told me....doesn't work'....some people donot realize that a highly expensive activity/toy cannot do what an involved parent can do with simple home made things.

I believe these activities work best because of dedicated parents. Other things are very difficult to judge (age to start at, health status, siblings etc...) we are still learning about that. Its like a study we were doing on 'what things cause a particular cancer'...the air we breathe, the food or family to blame?....'oops did you make a note of the fact that I love peas and ate it every evening'  smile  It is difficult to pinpoint...but atleast we get a general idea...it is a very difficult job for the investigator...good luck to you!

Also, if you need one more question   Wink  , please add 'prenatal stimulation'....I believe that did wonders for both my son and me.

Take care,
Shaman
