I made a list last night of things I want to do POI and not just bits. We can't do everything,so I am trying to prioritize.    I definitely won't be able to write all of these on my own. I'm glad we are talking about collaborating.                                                                                                              Places: continents, countries, cities, places in the Bible                                                                                                                                People: composers, artists, poets, authors, presidents, monarchs, world leaders, scientists, inventors, people in the Bible                                  Science: animals, parts of the body                                                                                                                                                                Others: shapes, musical instruments,  works of art                                                                                                                                            What are your categories?

So, I spoke with KL and they are gong to be making a board soon.

In the mean time we can just post the categories under encyclopedic knowledge board. So for each set start a new topic (i.e. EK-Continents). Then, if you have a group of bits, each with 10 POIs, you can:

1. Create a one file with all of the bits, POIs and pictures (might be easiest, just make a word file and put each picture on one page followed by that bits POIs, so it is one big file)

or

2. You can save each bit with it's picture and attach, each as a seperate file.

If people have comments on your set of bits they can then add them to that thread

I think it would be best if we then also have another thread with a list of all categories that have been created. I'll make one and call it: EK categories and I will have the divisions listed. Then as you create a new thread just post the category name on that thread and we will have a running view of what we have. When the new board is created we can just move everything over.

I just wanted to start getting some organizational system in effect, if anyone else has any ideas, please share so we can keep this moving.

Sorry for the delay, all. I was away last week and still trying to catch up with backlog, before going on another trip later today.

Lappy will be launching the board over the next couple of days.  One reason its' taking so long is cos we are revamping some of the board structure which takes a bit of time.

Anyway, you guys should feel free to do whatever you like in terms of sharing the bits etc.  My only suggestion is that all the media files should also be easily accessible as a file, so you might want to group pictures/sound files together in a zip file, or attach them individually here.  From what I know, it's easy to paste pictures etc. onto Word and Powerpoint documents, but hard to extract them back out as a separate file, which we will need when we add them to LR.

Hi,
someone should cover the biomes - tropical forests, deserts, tundra etc.
I can write about
- boreal forests
and   main habitats here in NW Europe
- grasslands
- forests
- Sea coast
- rivers
- Sea (Baltic Sea in my case which differs a lot from other seas)
- rivers
- lakes
- mires.
Characteristics, general classification, key structures and processes, some species, protection.

I am botanist ecologist and also teaching, and I have prepared similar materials earlier.
But someone  should cover other biomes; I have never been in tundra or tropical forest smile
Someone should cover marine ecosystems.

And as I live in Europe I know Northamerican boreal forests rather well but other habitats.
Is it interesting for you at all, because most of people are form other parts of World here? Are such detailed things necessary at all?

I can do it within a month; currently I am offline for the most of time. And what about the pictures? Are you making references on each picture? What are the legal sources of pictures?

I'm so confused.

Is Encyclopedic knowledge about learning categories of things or is it about taking a concept or term and communicating bits of knowledge (like 5-10 phrases) about that term? One sounds like learning lists of things in categories. The other sounds like providing comprehensive information about a single thing.

EK is a combination of providing 'bits' of intelligence (i.e. showing many different items from a single category as single 'bits' of information) which later progresses to 'programs' of intelligence, which takes a selection of the previously-shown bits and provides ten facts about each one.

Hope this helps clear up your confusion smile

Hi Everyone.

About a year ago I made a heap of categories and uploaded them into the free section and they are all in power point. I would love to convert them for LR and use them for that.

I have made some on the human body. Like bones of the skull, and parts of the eye,  but I have also made heaps of geography ones like continents and then I have broken it down into Countries of Africa 1-6 countries of Europe 1-6 I think thats as far as I got Im not sure. I will have to have a look. I think it will be great to convert these files and then maybe we can take a couple of countries each and write ten facts about them and keep breaking down. For example.

This is Australia. (picture of Australia)
This is the Australian Flag
Australia is a nation as well as a continent (picture of australia again)
Australia's NAtional capital is Canberra (Picture of canberra on australian map)
Australia has six states and two territories
Australia has a population of 22million people
Majority of the people live on the coastline near beaches.
Australia is also known as the lucky country because of its vast natural resources.
Australia has its own own indignious people called Aboriginals (picture of an Aboriginie)
The main language spoken in Australia is English.

Then you could take each of those facts and contiue to break it down further. You could go into what the states and territories are called, what are the main exports of australia. So on and so on. Im just using Australia as an example because i live here and its easy for me to rattle off ten facts.

I hope that makes sense that way we can get lots and lots of info together.

Nhockday. I love the idea of an EK cirriculum that would be fabulous!!!!

Hi all,

Susan Khan just posted a link: http://www.kidskonnect.com/ and it's like an encyclopedia and provide a lot of information and topic about each subjects. This is the subjects list http://www.kidskonnect.com/subject-index.html . I think we can extract most of the information from there and probably need some modification and additional picture files for those facts.  LOL
