Do you have a fun and creative way of entertaining your child? If yes then please do share. Maybe we will create a collection of 101 ways of entertaining your child which will be so valuable for us busy parents.

Maybe we can even vote for the most fun activity and the winner can win some points. What do you think, moderators?

Please provide information such as appropriate age, things you need, etc. Here's the format:

TITLE OF THE ACTIVITY (age 2-5)

Christmas Countdown (Age 2+)

With Christmas around the corner, my son is getting increasingly impatient. How many times in a day do I need to hear "Is today Christmas? I want my present now!" So we made a Christmas Countdown Ring.

What you need:
Red, green construction paper and/or other paper
Scissors (or just tear them)
Stapler or tape
Markers (dark colors)
Tacks

Cut construction paper according to how many days left until Christmas. I used a page out of a magazine for all the days except Christmas. I used red paper for Christmas so it stands out among all the other rings.

Draw something to do with Christmas (tree, star, wreath, etc.)on rings.

Staple or tape each one - drawing out - into a ring - linking each one together as you go.

Then tack onto something like a bulletin board, or the wall, and every day take one ring off. This serves as a clear visual of number of days left till Christmas.

I saw this on http://www.kidsturncentral.com/holidays/christmas/ccrafts20.htm

Catapillar countdown (Age 2+)

Same principle as the first activity but you start with a catapillar head -
This activity is great for introducing the circle.
And learning to count backwards.

One large circle.
Two antenas - rounded L's with a dot on the top
A nose, mouth and eyes.
However many circles that match the days you are counting.

The circles are stapled together.

From the head the circles get slowly smaller and each circle is numbered in order.

eg.  12 days of counting you would work backwards removing 12, 11, 10 etc.

Liked that idea of having the special day as a different colour!

We have a friend who has constant count downs and it really works well for her and her kids.

A story to go along with this activity - the story uses a paper chain! - can be found here:

Pyramid Bowling

You stack plastic cups in a pyramid shape, like 4 cups in the first row then 3 on top of it, then 2 and then 1.  Use a ball and try to knock of the pyramid.

Quick Science experiment (Age 2+)

The experiment shows that the three colours red, blue and yellow make up the other colours in the rainbow!

You need:

A shallow dish - preferably glass
Half a cup of milk
Three food colours - Red, Blue and Yellow
Dish washing soap

Method:

Pour the milk into the shallow dish.  In the dish put two drops of red colouring on the outer edge, and third way across, still on the outer edge put two drops of blue and finally two drops of yellow, keeping to the outer edge.  Then put two squirts of dish washing soap in the middle.  Watch as the colours start to change.  It takes a little while to get going - I sped mine up a bit by adding extra soap.

Loads of fun and they learn too!

Hi TABS,

Just tried your experiment, it was a lot of fun. There was a lot of oh and wow, adults included! My son can't wait to show daddy the "trick" when daddy gets home later. Karma to you! Now I wish I can explain why the soap has such an effect.

Thanks for a great activity!

Hi joan,

Glad you enjoyed it.  It's also fun to do other colours to see what colours come out.  If your kids are a bit older you could get them to do a little recording - When the blue and yellow mixed together the colour green was made etc.

Activity: Blowing Bubbles in a Cup
Age: Old enough not to swallow instead
Description: A few drops of dish soap or baby shampoo in a cup half  full of water. Stick the straw in and blow. Great for mouth muscles developing. Watch out for drinking it! (We practiced blowing out a candle through the straw first.) Loads of bubbles and laughter!

Colored Rice (Age 1+)

You'll need:

 - rice
 - rubbing alcohol
 - food coloring
 - ziploc bags

1. Add desired amount of rice into ziploc bags. If you plan to make 4 different colors, then prepare 4 bags of rice.
2. Put a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol into each bag.
3. Add a few drops of food coloring into bag.
4. Give to kids to message, toss, shake the bag to mix the rice with food coloring evenly.
5. Pour rice on a newspaper to dry. About 20 mins.

The kids love playing with the brightly colored rice. They can pour, measure, etc. It does get messy, but it can be easily swept up.

Making a prism or rainbow

You'll need:

- a glass of water
- a window where direct sunshine pours through
- a piece of white paper

Place the glass of water in front of the window with the piece of paper in front of it.  Soon you will see a prism reflected through the water onto your paper - or sometimes it shines on to something else in the room.  Just put the paper where ever it shows up - my son just loves it.  We have our fish tank now in front of a window and I often see him with his paper examining the colours!  And it all the colours of the rainbow - so good for teaching colours and numbers.
