Rainmatrix, good question.  I just discovered last week that my little boy likes having the words/sentences read in the presentations.  I always figured it didn't matter because I, of course, read the words/sentences myself.  Maybe in the future I will add some in, to see if it makes a difference.

Dear Mandi & Everyone,

My apologies for the late response - I just saw that you asked me a question in this post.

I have not attended the IAHP course - although I wish I could.

With respect to Mrs. Perla of The Classical Mommy site - she has created many wonderful presentations that she spent hours upon hours as a labour of love that show the incremental method of teaching reading via the Doman method.  This is why I posted her site for DadDude to see the incremental teaching methods because he has not read the books with those details. 

She has a few points that I agree with and many that I do not because I have further investigated the sources she uses and in my opinion, her conclusions drawn are incorrect for many reasons.  If anyone wants to discuss if further offline via PM - I will be glad to - but I don't want to get into a tit-for-tat debate because quite frankly I don't have time for it.  It is enough to say that when a parent has high expectations, and they are unmet, it is easy to blame the system you are using.  I believe this is what happened - and it is unfortunate.  However, although I disagree with her interpretations of some limited sources with very narrow views within one field; I do admire and respect the work she has done and made available for everyone to still use.  I believe many people get caught in the simplistic debate of wholewords vs. phonics - without seeking out the research/writings of other fields such as linguistics and the sub-specialty of language acquisition - with various opinions within it as well.  Each discipline uses different methods/theories to draw their conclusions, and it is very easy for parents to get caught in the middle of the various debates and then draw the wrong conclusions.  This is because they don't know how to rectify APPARENT discrepancies between the various disciplines/methodologies.  And most of the time, the various methods COMPLIMENT each other.  And this is the case with wholewords/phonics/whole language.   

In the end - it is about the integration of various methods that obviously have worked for 50+ years according to Doman, Titzer, & Dr. Shichida - even though she feels it did not work for her son as well as she had hoped.  It does not negate the fact that it has worked for countless others.  Now, that being said, it is true that some children will learn better with wholewords than with phonics, and vice versa and each parent has to find what works best for their child.   And as I understand it from reading the Doman books, we should always be aware of what is working and what is not - and I did not get from any method that we are "filling empty vessels" - we should always be sensitive to the child's interests and tailor the subject matter and make learning fun.  If it is not fun for either the parent or the child - then change it so that it is.  That is the point.
