"WHY??"

Another post reminded me of a phenomenon that's faced by all of us with slightly older kids:

The "WHY" question!

Yes, this is where virtually anything and everything you say to your little one will be met with the question:

"WHY??"

Felicity has been doing the "why" routine for quite some time already, and I think it's actually a great time to really explain LOTS of things to them. 

For example, she now understands why Daddy has to go to the office: to work, so I can earn money, so I can buy things, including her toys...

So the next time when she asked me not to go to the office, I would turn the question around on her, and she would answer answer the question herself, and reluctantly let me leave for work peacefully.

EXCEPT, after a couple of days of this routine, this is what she suddenly said to me as I was leaving for work:

"Daddy, I don't want you to go to work.  I have enough toys already!!"

 

Anyone else with kids in this "WHY" stage with experiences to share?

haha, thats adorable! Kids are too smart!  My son, 22 months hasn't started the why question yet but he is into saying "this?" meaning he wants me to tell him what it is. I am loving it so far because it is HIM asking ME instead of me telling and pointing everything out. It's just fun as they get older and a little bit more interactive.

While my daughter hasn't quite got to the why stage yet we are giving her explanations for things when she requests something she cannot have.

She's still breastfed and we wanted to change this to morning and evening only. We explained that breastfeeding was only at night and in the dark - so she tries now in the day to shut the curtain, insists it is dark, makes me read her books and then says "bed, milk" and puts herself to bed to await some milk.

I think the why stage is rapidly approaching because although she doesn't say the word yet she is constantly asking questions using other words: "Daddy?" - yes that's the Daddy, "Mummy gone?" and so on.

LOL...that is funny...I have to say sometimes we as adutls run out of new ideas or new answers for them. I am not there but looking forward to..thanks for sharing KL.

we have been in the 'wasat?' (what's that?) stage FOREVER!  she had that question before nearly any other clear statement. and it applies to absolutely everything!  finally we've found the trick of turning it around and she's very happy to answer.  if she doesn't know she'll shrug and 'ah-dunno' (i don't know).  it's pretty cute.  but after about the millionth time in a day one does begin to go a bit batty.

My youngest applies the knowledge:
Why do big girls have big  breasts? I explain about babies and milk connection...
Next day at a friend's place she comes up to a 16 year old: "Look, you are big enough to have babies!" Very embarassing moment for me and my early education

Just a day after reading this and my daughter starts with the whys... If this is how they START, then heaven help us.

She picks up a dummy chain we had for her when she was baby except it never got opened because she never used dummies. I ask: "Who is that for?"
"sist, sist," (sister) she says
"but you don't have a sister"
"WHY?"

Ummm, because Mummy hasn't got pregnant yet.... because you might have a brother one day instead.... I don't know

And all I thought was... its only the beginning:)
