Ella started reading English words at around 9-10 months and Chinese at around 13 months. Here she is at 15 months. She doesn't talk much yet, so she uses American Sign Language to sign the words.

Oh, we also love the Jose Luiz Orozco's music CDs, we check a different one out each time we go to the library. I love his voice.

Hi aangeles,
Thanks for the information!  I went and ordered from their web site both the DVD's and flashcards.  I also use wink to learn chinese.  Do you use this also?

I seem to also remember that you were teaching Tagalog also.  What materials are you using and how is the progress?

Thanks.

By the way, tobias also likes the Little Pim vols in French and Spanish.  I'll have to look at some of the other resources you recommended.  There sure are a lot to choose from...which is actually a good thing!  Thanks again.

Tobias8,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I am not currently using Wink to Learn Chinese because it is in simplified Chinese. I am waiting for the traditional Chinese version to come out (which they assured me will be at the end of this year).

Regarding Tagalog, I am happy to say that my daughter's comprehension has increased by leaps and bounds since my husband started being more consistent and conscientious in speaking Tagalog to her. At this time, I think her understanding of English, Chinese, and Tagalog are about equal. Unfortunately, I don't have any Tagalog books/DVDs to supplement her learning. Will have to wait until we make a trip back to the Phils. to get her these.

Are you also teaching french and spanish reading? or just exposing them to the language? I'm trying to figure out if it's a good idea to teach my son to read in both english and spanish from the get go or if I should get him comfortable in english first and then start the spanish reading. Any advice?  My hubby and I both speak English and he has 2 hours a day with a spanish play group for exposure, he loves little pim spanish and other spanish videos/music. He is picking up the language nicely but I wonder if I should also start teaching him to read in spanish now rather than later.

Hi LDS mom,

I am currently only teaching reading English and Mandarin Chinese. I am regularly exposing her to French and Spanish though, through music CDs, Little Pim, and GD bits. I tried showing her Muzzy French and Spanish but she was not interested it. I think it is because Muzzy is in cartoons and she prefers videos of real children, animals, and other things. I did discover a great Spanish language DVD called Spanish for Beginners by Whistlefritz. The videos are entirely in Spanish so the child learns through immersion and not translation. My daughter loves it!  smile

Wow, hats off to you and your DD, It is very commendable that you are able to do so many things with your DD despite working full time.  Good work, very inspiring , BTW I loved your home made BIT cards. Wold you be willing to share your POis for composers with the forum? And i love Beethovens wig, I never really played it so much for my DD but I used to sing along with it while cooking, very funny lyrics.

Thanks for the reply.  One more question re: tagalog; are you using any flashcards, homemade or not, to check her understanding?  How can you tell her understanding is approximately equal with English, Chinese, and Tagalog?

You definitely are quite an inspiration.

aangeles,

Just an update.  After you gave the site at which you obtained your chinese flashcards, I ordered a set.  I had been teaching my tobias8 with Wink to Learn Chinese and was curious as to whether he could recognize the chinese characters on the flashcards.  To my surprise, he was able to select the correct card with my questioning.  Thank you again so much for sharing your experience and resources!

wow! that's wonderful tobias8! isn't it exciting to discover that our babies are learning so much more than we think they are? my daughter has amazed me so many times already even though i constantly remind myself not to underestimate her capability to learn.  big grin regarding her understanding 3 languages, it is quite easy for us to assess because she makes the same sign in ASL when we say things in english, chinese, or filipino (ex. eat, chī, kain or take a bath, xǐzǎo, ligo)

aside from english and chinese, are you teaching your baby to read in the other languages too?

Hi aangeles,

We are trying to teach English, Tagalog, Chinese, French and Spanish.  So far he seems to really be enjoying it.  We're also trying to teach music and math, and just a little bit of ASL.  Music he loves, but math he seems to resist a little more.

Thanks for your reply.

@aangeles, wow, thank you so much for posting this.  I feel really excited to start teaching my child after watching your vdo.  I know I'm late in the game, my daughter is 1, but better late than never.  I'm a working parent too, could you please help me by elaborating on when you teach your child.  Do you show her the cards in the morning and then twice after work?  And, then the DVD before going to bed?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Aangeles,
have you heard of the baby Learn Chinese method (dvd and flashcards)
I know my daughter won't like Wink to Learn as she does not look at flashcards or flashing dvds like TweedleWink. So far she's been watching Little Pim but it lacks many conversationnal words like greetings etc. but i have no idea what the dvd is made of
it costs 68$ for the first set.

also has someone heard about Globe Toddlers? This is what it says about the series in the asianparent website:
Description: .This DVD just won the "2008 DVD of the Year" award by Creative Child Magazine! With 115+ words spoken and written in Mandarin with associated Pin Yin (and English, Spanish and French), this DVD is an excellent product for helping a child build his/her vocabulary in Chinese.

You and your daughter are a wonderful example that learning is fun and even working parents can do it.  I think many people believe a myth that they have to spend hours a day teaching their babies as though it is a full time job.  Thanks for your videos.  Your daughter is adorable.  Good job, Mama smile

I know this is an old topic but so inspiring.  yes  and amazing. I would also love to read more about your schedules.
I have searched for the composer's portrait online but couldn't find as good pictures as yours. Do you think you could help with the links? I have googled some but some are so small that if I make it bigger the picture is not very clear.

I was actually happy to see the size of your english flashcards as that is the size I started to use to teach her Slovak and it is not the recommended size.So I am happy to see they work anyway  smile
How did you show them as you had different words on both sides?
many thanks

Hi Lelask,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I had all the composer portraits saved in my computer but my hard drive had crashed sometime after I took these videos and I lost them all, so it took me some time to look up the links again. I printed the pics on 8x10 photo paper instead of cardstock and laminated them.

Regarding the flashcards, those were the ones that came with the YBCR package and I did not actually use them to teach her to read. We used them more for playing games with her and for checking on her progress (okay, okay... for testing her  ohmy ) once in a while so it did not matter much that there were different words on the two sides of the flashcards.

Hope this helps!  smile
