Yes--but it depends on what you mean by "read." When using systems like (but not limited to) "Your Baby Can Read," babies can learn to memorize many words. Upon being shown a card, without any other cue, by six or nine months some of them have been able to indicate what the word means (for example, when seeing the word "head" they can point to their own heads) and, when they are old enough, can actually say the word.
