I hope this thread could be a help to people starting to homeschool smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile  smile

I am using A Beka curriculum with my kids. I like it. It's colorful, structured, easy to understand (even for a non-native English speaker like me). Phonics based reading and writing, non-Evolution Christian based. One book per subject per year. Very American, so I don't use all the subjects (as I am not American).

What about you?

When my mom homeschooled myself and my two brothers she would get used text books from the public school. She also suplimented with library books. I plan to homeschool my little ones, (I only have one so far), and I would like to write my own curriculum. Has anyone done this? I think there is enough access to info these days that you don't have to spend a lot of money for your kids to get a good education.

I am currently writing my own curriculum, but later on i plan on using ACE ministries and the time4learning.com    We will use both at Kindergarten right now we are in preschool using Danielle's place curriculum ABC I believe, and hubbardscupboard.org as well. Then I compose my own out of several websites, but I am a homemaker so i have the time tod that well at night when everybody's is asleep.

Hi omimama

I'm doing something similar, using the textbooks which the public schools are using, and then supplementing with other resources from the library, internet etc. I do agree you don't need to spend a lot of money on homeschooling in this aspect. But I still end up buying lots of books for my boys because the books may not be available in the library. And they love reading so much that's the first thing my eldest son does when he wakes up in the morning, and my 2nd son might follow next.

We use local public school text books for their Hungarian schooling as well. It's the books/curriculum in English that I am mostly interested in knowing about.  wub

Hi momof3boys,

I was just talking to my husband this morning about creating an area in our budget for educational things. There are so many things I would like to get for our dd but living on one income won't allow unless we save. I thought I could get a head start if I start saving now,(she is only 5 months).

Does your library have an interlibrary loan program? What I do is look up books online (at a place amazon so I can see reviews) and then go to my library's website to see if they have it. I can also see if any of the other libraries in my county have it, if so they will send it to my local library. If there isn't a waiting list for the book I usually get it in a few days.

But being on a budget has forced me to be creative. Which is a good thing I'm sure.

Happy Teaching

My mother ran a very large homeschooling resource library. Where members paid a memebership fee and could borrow materials to use and or copy. Luckily I able to use any of these materials. Check with your local homeschooling groups many have these libraries.

I am using a mix of materials to make my own curriculumn. Here in Ontario the government bookstore has a book your can get for each ggrade that shows what needs to be learned that year. It was actually put together for parents of school children but is a great resourse for making sure everything gets covered.

I really like the "Learn at home" books as well. You can get one for each grade. The are under $20 and cover everything that needs to be learned that year with day to day lessons already written up. They are easy to add my own material too for extra info on a certain subject. They have a great teachers section to give instructions or suggestions on how to teach a subject. They are available from K-8 I believe.

I was wondering whether it is possible to share materials and costs with other homeschoolers?  What is the legal issues with that?

For example I'm really interested in purchasing the pre-school montessori curriculum but it's like $800 - and if I could split that up with say 4 other parents - say we each bought a manual and then photocopied for the other parents - would that be illegal?  And would other parents be interested and doing something like that?

I am not sure abou the legal issue with doing that, but if there wasn't one I would be interested.

It all depends on the company. Some companies give you permission to copy for your personal use only and others are strict when it comes to copy writing. It is better to ask the company than to risk a lawsuit.
