Dear Tatianna,

Thank you but I'm actually not homeschooling. I've always been frightened about the idea of homeschooling. Whenever I tried to teach my son I always ended up frustrated. He always did the opposite of what I told him. I thought if I homeschool him, we'd both be miserable. But you opened my eyes to a world of homeschool that is very different, one hour of lesson per day and oh so much fun. This is almost doable. That's why I started planning and researching. Thank you for your inspiration. Hopefully I will eventually put the plan into action.

Tatiana, karma to you! Thanks for all the information! I am using Beka for English and local curriculum, as we are tested in that. I am finding that my Beka books are more of a guide than a rigid study as the kids change it all around and I try to follow their interests! Every morning we have 1hr devotionals doing Bible related studies before going into the school time. By lunch they are usually done with three Rs. We find that to follow our required learning takes about 1-3hr 4-5 times a week (2nd and 4th graders) which leaves enough time for other activities. We do a lot of crafts and sports in the afternoons.

Diana, homeschooling is practiced in Ukraine as well as in Hungary where I live. You do need to have an "umbrella school" that would test your child and fill out official paperwork. It depends on the principal of the school. Just call around to be their "private student" as that's what it's called. Since the curriculum is set, it limits your homeschooling style to an extent.

Hi Tatianna,

I did so appreciate all this information and the choices that we have.  Also your suggested short term plan, what to learn in a few months.  I did do quite a bit of research into the options you gave and found them most informative.  I will be home schooling and have honestly not known where to start.  The idea of a course is appealing simply because it's all done for you - but haven't really seen one that jumps out at me!  So did like the idea of combining a few different methods or subjects together.

I do have a question though.

If I homeschool, chosing a course or doing my own thing - would this not interfer with my son getting the recognised qualifications needed for work latter on?

I've joined this forum because I am preparing to home-school my kids when we move from Singapore to Australia for 1 year whilst my husband is pursuing his maters degree. Based on your experiences, how many weeks/month in advance should you plan the curriculum? We're moving sometime in August but I'm all jittery and nervous about home-schooling my 5 and 3 year olds alone. IN Singapore, I'm advised by the mommies to teach my kids myself and arm myself with lots of assessment books for my 5 year old to work on so that upon return to the Singapore system, she will not be too lost and behind her peers, especially as she will start her primary education in a few months upon return to Singapore. I feel really stressed by all these advice as I feel we should take the opportunity to expose my kids to different learning environment and styles whilst in Australia and not play 'catch-up'. Sigh...

hi EJEZMom

please don't feel stressed about homeschooling
it's a wonderful chance for you to spend lots of quality time with your kids
i'm not sure what is on the curricula in singapore
but before you go out and buy a lot of assessment books
i would visit a local school and see what is on the program for six year olds
that way you will have a idea of what your child will need to know

but regardless of what is on the schools curricula
your program should be tailored to you and your kids
book work(or time siting in chair) should only be a small part of your day
i recommend no more then a hour to a hour and half for young children
and that time should be broken up into small 20 min lessons
reading, writing, and arithmetic are very important but they are not everything
nature, art, music, poetry, and free play are just as important
and can be easily added to your day
expose your kids to a different learning environments
and trust yourself and your kids

because you know your kids better then anyone else
and because it's one on one teaching
your kids will learn so much faster then in school
so don't feel like you have to "catch up"
take your time and don't worry

as for how long you should prepare it depends
you do need time to read up and make plans
as well as get materials together
the time it takes depends on how large of a program your planing to use

but you have nothing to be nervous about homeschooling is wonderful
and your going to be a great teacher
best of luck
tatianna

Thanks you tatianna for your wonderful posts. I've been thinking seriously about homeschooling since I was pregnant, but I've been so busy teaching Marina things that I haven't had a chance to learn how to homeschool her!
                                                                                   laugh

I have done some looking and cherry-picked resources, but a lot of what I've come across is faith-based, which I'm not interested in. With your lists and advice in hand, I feel more confident and capable of making a plan. Practically serene!

Dear Tatianna,

thanks so much for your assurances...

Like Longtalldrink, when I got pregnant, I had wanted to homeschool my kids instead of sending them to formal primary schools.  Now's my chance to try this out and see if I like it enough to do it full-time!!!

Kharma to you!

Tatianna,

I can't give you enough Karma! (literally). Your posts are very informative, encouraging and inspirational about homeschooling.  You've given me some great ideas on subjects and activities to pursue with my son.

I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Tatiana,

Did you take a training course or study to become a home school consultant? What is your training or credentials, I am interested in becoming one as well. I will be homeschooling my daughter (now 5 months) and I have taught public school for the past 13 years. Although I am no longer teaching due to health issues.
 Thanks!

One of the main reasons we are homeschooling is because we do not like the direction the school systems are going, for examples:

1.   Teacher comes up short in student-filed lawsuit, http://www.onenewsnow.com/Legal/Default.aspx?id=519126
2.   School sued over lesbian lecturer ,http://www.onenewsnow.com/Legal/Default.aspx?id=522194
3.   Legal battle over mandatory sex ed in Germany, http://www.onenewsnow.com/Legal/Default.aspx?id=509324
4.   Mass. lawmakers push for 'gay'-friendly school programs, http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/Default.aspx?id=511392
5.   School website promotes homosexual agenda, http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/Default.aspx?id=514310
6.   ACLU demands LGBT website access for TN students, http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/Default.aspx?id=498342

School has gotton away from the main purpose to educate the children in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.  It is becoming a political indoctrination play ground.

wow,so much information to take in

Can anyone recommend a good program or a book about homeschooling a toddler?
I'd love to homeschool my son and my future children, the sooner I start the more comfortable I'll feel about it smile
