I'm not an American but being so close up in Canada I'm sure our education system is affected by this too. Makes me glad I'm homeschooling. These stats are just shocking.

It's really shocking and it's quite sad to know that. I am base in Singapore and I know that the education system here also causing kids a lot of stress and the parents here also very "kiasu" (afraid of failure). I don't see kids enjoy learning and treat gaining knowledge as a joy for self-improvement. I try to make my kids have fun while learning as much as possible as I know kids or human learn best when they enjoy it. Homeschooling need a lot of effort from the parents but I think it will suite the kids best as they learn in their own pace. The down side of homeschooling is that your kids will have less time socialize. Try to bring he/she out as much as possible to gain some socializing skill

I agree my son loves to learn because we try to make it fun
I don't worry about socialization. We have friends with children the same age we meet up with all the time. Plus when else in your life will you ever be in a room with 25+ people the exact ages as you anyhow I love this blog entry, it helped my get over that fear

Socializing has been a topic about homeschooling for many years, however, I have taught and been around many homeschoolers and they have no problem with social skills, however, there are some who have trouble with the fact of being around other people, but it could be the child instead the method of education. For I know many public schoolers who are anti-social as well. In todays fast pasted society social skills for many homeschoolers isn't a problem thanks to the internet, church, homeschool co-ops, 4H, and so on. Get involved with the community if you are concerned about social skills, they will learn fast. Create your own homeschool co-op, request a 501c3 for non-profits, apply for grants and have fun.
