Hi!   My daughter is 2 years old now.  I don't know whether it's the problem of Bi-langual, my BB 很遲都不懂說話.

I think you all may have the same experience.  My Indonesia maid is talking half English and half Cantonese. 我聽不懂的廣東話.  We are bi-langual parents that speak half Cantonese and English.  Somehow, I found my duaghter understand my meaning well.  But she don't speak.... I already tried to stimulate her by singing together or using some other gaming methods to force her talk....

Last week, I noticed she eventually spoke  "一, 二, 三...."   However, it was Indonesian pronunciation "一, 二, 山...."   Headache.......

Please don't force your child to speak. When she's ready, she will speak. Meanwhile, encourage her with lots of stimulations that you have been doing.

Do you know, Albert Einstein only started talking at age 9? I have a cousin who only talked when he was 3. My god son only decided to talk when he turned 2.5 yrs. Oh..my little girl who's 16 mths still doesn't call me "mama" or call her daddy "daddy"!.. we are not in a rush cos we know she's absorbing what we are teaching her, showing her, stimulating her and etc.. and we know when she is ready, she'll talk!

If you are very very concern, take her to a speech pathologist who would be able to teach you ways to encourage talking. That was told by my girl's paediatrician when I told her my girl's not talking.

Yes, Lil makes some very good points.

Speaking early or not is not really a good indication of anything, so don't worry too much about it, Iris!

I don't know whether this will help or not, or whether you've already been doing it, but let me share with you what we did to 'encourage' Felicity to talk from very early on.

When she first started to be able to make certain sounds, we would make her say it before she would be given what she wanted. So, early on, she could say 'please' (well, more like "pit") smile , so if she really wanted something, we would make sure she says please first before we would give it to her.  Then when she could say more than one word, we would make her say, "Please Mommy" or "Please Daddy".

And often time, since I love to hug her really tight and she doesn't like to be hugged when she's trying to play, I would (playfully) run over, grab her, hug her really tight, and not let her go until she says, "Let me go please, Daddy!".  Actually, we've made it into a game. After that, I would count to 3, and she has to run far enough away before I catch her again, and if I do, she'd have to say it over again.  laugh

It's also a good way of teaching kids manners.  This is how a typical conversation would go when she wants something:

F: I want it! I want it!
Me: OK, but you have to ask nicely.
F: May I have it please?
Me: Have what?
F: May I have some cake please?
Me: Who are you asking?
F: May I have some cake please, Daddy?
Me: Of course you may!

smile  It's all done in good fun!  Basically, I've found that we can get her to talk a lot more (or talk properly) if there's an immediate need or motivation for her to do so.  Some people might think it's cruel, but I don't see it that way at all.  In the end, I'm not denying her anything, I'm just giving her a motivation to talk and to learn manners.  Obviously, you have to be mindful of her mood at the time, and always try to keep it fun and playful! (that's to key to almost everything!).

Hope that helps, Iris! Let us know how things go!

Hello Iris,

Thanks for your sharing. A few months ago I thought my son was having speech delay (because he was not reaching the milestones that he should be reaching) and I got really concerned. I was referred to a speech pathologist who said although my son spoke a little, he understood a lot. She then suggested us to ask him to speak out what he wanted before we gave it to him (just like what KL did). For example, my son really likes Cheerios. Instead of giving him Cheerios when he said "mum mum", we asked him to say "o".

We then started the right brain DVD on him (I made a post on "We are starting to use right brain education on our son") and we saw a language leap within a month. The speech pathologist was glad when we saw her a month later and she suggested us to introduce action words to him - like go, get, want...

In fact, the more I learn about kids' education, the more I am convinced being able to speak early is not necessarily good or bad. Every child develop in their own pace. My daughter spoke very early at her age and she was speaking in full sentence when she was 18 months old. She is a more left brain person because language skills is a left brain (logical) skill. My son is more right brain. Although he speaks a lot of single words at 19 months now, he rarely brings 2 words together to make a logical, meaningful phrase. So far, he is left-handed all the time. We are not worried about him now because we see that he excels in some other areas that my daughter (almost 4 years old) still cannot manage to do well! LOL

The most important thing is to give him lots of love and stimulation so that he is going forward every day!

Teresa

Hello, everyone,

Thanks for all your help and valuable sharing.  Yes, Teresa.  I discovered that my baby understand a lots but she is not willing to speak.  And I may got too concerned.   I thought my daughter is having a speech delay too.   The government clinic transfer her to a speech pathologist,  but in case, I don't feel thats such a need.  She can say, "Cat" when she see a real Cat in front, or "Daddy", when her daddy get back home.

K.L.'s points is good.  Any mom or parents may ask a thousands times, just simply wants their babies to speak up an "answer".   I have tried to ask plenty of questions but my daughter totally neglected me.    Except you got foods or drinks on your hands.   I think, she kind of cannot tell the differences of "Hello Kitties" and "Keororo",  but I am sure she can write a thesis paper about "Potatoes" and "Rice".

One point is, my baby seems understand me well.   When I requested her to get back a little, babies usually getting too close to the TV monitor.   May be Lil was right, I have been too pushy.   She don't felt the nessarities to talk....then don't talk.

As I have consulted some of the other parents and you told me  "Albert Einstein only started talking at age 9",   I seems relax a little.    My baby seems thinking a lots and understand my questions well.     I asked my mom if I talk a lots in the same age.    My mom told me, I went to a kindergarten for interview at the age of 3, there a teacher start to ask me a question, my answer is "Not necessary to talk".    I definitely told the teacher,  "I don't want to answer you.  That's not necessary...."   Sigh.....

Cause and effects,  it seems my turn to suffer now.

 :tongue2:

Thanks for all your supports! My kid finally speak and copy my words.  As we are responsible parents, I did took her for an evaluation.

Her social behaviours is in the age of 4, the social skills is above adverage.  But the speech is back behind one year.
The evaluation report kind of point out the truth, she did mixed up Cantonese with English and cannot pick up both.  The Child therapies/ doctor suggest us from Single Cantonese words.  She now follow up quite well.   Just a bit slow......

Somehow, she may copy my words in a similiar tone..... Actually quite funny and cute... It's the happiest thing in the world to watch her starting to speaks....

Cheers,

Iris

Maybe too many language will defer their speaking too.  We just try to communicate with her and tell her to see how our mouth/tongue does  to pronounce the words by showing her how we say the words and encourage her to speak even though her pronounciation is a bit deviated.
