Does BB able to distinguish different language.
In HK, it is a very special city, many family speak muti language, like Cantonese, English, Mandarin, Taiwaness and if your family have oversea domestic helper, sometime will speak Indonesian / Filipino.

I have read some books and said that child should learn more language before 6 (As it is a golden time for them to handle/learn language), however I have attend a seminar and have a kindergarten teachershare her experience that, some of her student cannot express herself properly and rare to speak because she expose too many kind of languages at home. The child will mix with different language and grammer in 1 sentence.

Anyone can share this area experience with us?

Hello Joanne,

Take a look at our discussion at:

http://forum.brillkids.com/general-discussion-b5/teaching-2-languages-at-a-time-(split-from-'when-do-i-start')/

Also look at the topic "When do I start?"

It's possible that your kid can learn more than 1 language at a time and speak like a native speaker!

Hey Joanne,

Do Mandarin and Cantonese consider as 2 languages?  I am a native Hong Kong that speak Cantonese at home.   But teaching Mandarin at home seems a must nowadays.

Pretty chaos....

Cheers,

Mom Iris

I live in US and I'm a Taiwanese.
My in-law speak Cantonese and are primary care-givers of my 1 yr son.
My husband and I speak English/Marian to each other.

So, learning multiple languages is inevitable.

I did hear that kids of multi-languages environment does speak late compared to single language environment.

Hi Everyone,
I just came across to your discussion. Please don't mind I would like to share a bit,

I studied Language Translation and Interpretation in Uni. From my prof, she told us, our brain is so intelligent. We do have different storage for different languages. Just like the library, one row for Mandarin, one row for English etc. So, the language row will pop up when it detected.

Actually a kid can learn multi-languages during their childhood or more accurate is before the puberty period, but then please bear in mind, it doesn't mean that you can speak with him in different language in a sentence. Like some of you said, my in-law talks to him in Cantonese, I talked to him in Mandarin or so. So, you have to keep this. By the time he knows how to express, he will definitely will speak and answer you with the correct language. Like, he will speak Cantonese when he talks to your in-law, then speak Mandarin when to talk you.
What's why if you speak few languages in a sentence? Yup, the problem is we have different grammar structure in different languages. So, if the child used to be like this, then end up, he can't give you a proper sentence. That's simple.

hope that this little knowledge will help, thanks.

Hi everyone,

Babies do learn to speak/understand/communicate in different languages if he/she does have the multi language environment provided to him/her. It is not necessarily to say that multilingual babies speak slower than monolingual babies. I have 3 children, they were all early talkers by nature and they are all capable of communicate in 3 languages although English is the domain for the two older ones and the 18 months old is talking like a 2 and half years old, by nature, again, plus the multi language environment I purposely provided to her.

In my early childhood language teaching years, I saw many early talkers that can communicate in two or more languages some starting before 12 months old, I also saw a few bilingual children that can't say a few words or starting to talk after 30 months old. I would really like to let everyone know that it is totally depending on individual child, not because the baby is bilingual/multilingual or not. There were a hand full of children, however, I had to insist the parents to take them to the specialist because they have language delay problems and some of them are actually autistic but parents refuse to acknowledge it. They all referred to me by friends or maternal nurses but language teacher can't fix the speech problem for the child, Dr.s and speech pathologists can. We can teach your child to learn the language but not treat him/her.

If you think that your child is a late speaker but you are happy with all other areas of his/her development then, you would have no worries. If not, speak to your GP and investigate as early as possible. Autistic children or children with server language delay recover quick when the problem is dealt with earlier, trust me.

The point I want to make it here is: bilingual or multilingual won't make a child talk earlier or later, it is got nothing to do with that although lots of people would suggest that it can affect a child's ability to speak early or not. smile

There is a link with my website that you may want to check it out. Dr. Susane is specializing at helping bilingual children who has language development problems. She would be in a much better position to give advises.

Yes, most of the Chinese and Indian Children in Malaysia are learning multi-language

They will study Chinese (for Malaysian Chinese) and Tamil (for Malaysian Indian) in their Primary School (6 Years)
All the subject like Math, Science and Geography are in Chinese or Tamil

After that, they will continue with the Secondary School in Malay Language for another 5 to 7 years.
This time, all the subject like Math, Science, History, Geography and etc. are in Malay Languagu

When they proceed to University, all the subject are in English . . . .
