Radhika - Welcome aboard! You can still teach your kids using powerpoint presentations available in this site. Guess you are a busy mom...Btw, I am Radhika too.

Nirupa - How are you doing? Btw, your tamil powerpoint had .pptx extension. Is it by mistake or is it something that I am not aware of?

Preethi : To answer your questions:

1. Yes, Dr. Doman suggests categories. Starting with "self words" like name of baby, family members, baby's belongings, later moving to household articles, and later actions like singing, dancing etc.

2. Yes, 400 cards is definitely enough to begin with. You can first try these and add more according to your baby's interest.

3. IAHP suggest starting math after getting comfortable with reading, and EK after reading and math are established.

4. Presently I use YBCR only during baby's mealtime, that too not very regularly. The present LR curriculum is much better than YBCR, I feel. YBCR has only few words compared to using the Doman method.

5. Once you have reached a considerable amount of single words, say more than 50, you can start couplets.

6. Regarding math, first I would suggest starting reading first. Some babies may not be interested in seeing flashcards itself (not to discourage you, but mine refused to see flashcards but would see anything on the monitor). So I would say you start reading and see if he is interested in seeing cards. If he is, then you can prepare math cards. You can also show math on powerpoint, which is much easier and hassle-free rather than making manually.

Hope this helps.

Questers.

@Shaman, I was teaching my child  to read in marathi too , stopped it for a while as I have too many things going on.She talks in marathi though as that is my native language. I have some cat files for marathi and MAS2IN has many presentations as well. I think your post gave me an impetus to restart on marathi. so Karma to you.
P.s i am from TX too.

Hi Saniso,
its good to know that I have company smile Ours is a multilingual household- my husband speaks Telugu, I speak Marathi and we speak with each other in Hindi and English. I really want my son to speak Marathi (actually, any Indian language will do- I thought of teaching him Hindi but it will be easier for me to teach him Marathi). I want him to be able to read the Devanagiri script. I have a few marathi songs CD's and will get some more educational material when I leave for India next month. I will let you know if I find something good/ make some presentations.
How did you begin teaching your daughter? Do you speak ONLY in Marathi with her? We have just moved to Houston. I tried to see if someone taught Marathi here- atleast then my son would be in the company of marathi speaking kids- but there are no such classes.
Nevertheless, I will keep trying smile
Take care.

Hi All,

@Questers & Shaman
Thanks much for the valuable and detailed reply ..I have sucessfully started with the reading program ...its going on well both of them seem to be interested in the word flash card....
1.Questers I feel that 5 sets (with 5 words)for a day is a little too high number for the babies(its my personal opinion pls correct me if iam wrong)can I flash them in small numbers initially....?

2.do we have to show them the retired cards...if so when it can be flashed again..?

3.Regarding LR.... I have not yet bought it.....after getting to know more abt it probably I would give a try ....any idea abt the indian cost (LR and LM)..?

Hey Shaman ..am presently in India so cannot even think about buying the Doman math card from IAHP immediately...(well I need to wait for a very long time for someone to visit India), from all your experiences I feel that LR and LM are making wonders so will try to get it somehow...

as far math dot cards are concerned I will go with Questers (making powerpointpresentations....)...

Hi Radhika (thi_pappu)...gr8 to c u in this forum..I understand from your msg that you live in Chennai , even I stay in chennai...al the best to you too...

Thanks& Regards,
Preethi

Hi Preethi,

good to know that your babies like the flashcards- good luck with the program.

I did'nt know you were in India- in that case making your own cards would definitely be cost effective. I have the Doman math cards- let me know if you have any questions/ need to find out more details- I look at my cards and tell you what you need to know. In India, you have more resources to make your own BITS cards (we have good educational posters from which we can cut pictures and make picture cards)- it is very expensive here and hence the LR helps...so don't worry if you can't get the LR. I am actually flying to India next month and plan to get many such posters and pictures to make BITS cards for my son.

BTW, the Doman institute has a course scheduled in India (February 2010)....www.iahp.org

Also, check this website for free printable math cards:

http://www.internationalparentingassociation.org/Materials/index.html

Hope this helps. Take care.

Hi, I am from India, Mumbai.
I am near my due date and completed the ISP program a few weeks back. It focuses on developing the child Physically, Mentally, Socially, Spiritually and Emotionally.
As most of u rightly said, its a combination of Doman & Shichida method. The applications start right from when the baby is in the woumb...like showing flash cards from 7th month of pregnancy.
The program has plenty of applications that should be applied on the baby at every stage. Needs a lot of dedication, sincerity and commitment...Certain concepts like Sleep Talk really work (a lot of parents in our class shared their experience).
Its a wonderful program that every to-be parent should take if they have a chance!
But remember, they can only show the path...we need to walk on the path and reach the goal on our own!

Happy Parenting!

 Hi to all ! smile

I am Sudha Ramesh from Bangalore and have cute twin daughters (2 yrs 1 mth), I am so happy to have located this website which gave me an idea as to how to teach my kids to read. I am also giving them classical karnatik music training. I was not sure if they could get the words of the music but to my surprise they can sing the song after 2 weeks of training 3 days/week for an 1/2 hour class. So I guess, it is training in a fun way that helps kids learn at this age.

They can imitate too. Heres a video to share.

Thanks for sharing.

Preethi,

Great to know the program is going well!

1. There are no hard and fast rules. 25 words per day is just a guideline given by Dr. Doman which I think is workable. However, if you think it is too much for your babies and that they are turning away at some point, you can reduce the number of words and go with their pace.

2. Once you have done about 50 or more single words, you can start making couplets with the old words like "good mummy" "my daddy" etc. That is how you review the retired words. Later you can move on to phrases and sentences using the old words.

3. You can check the price in rupees at the "Buy Brillkids Software" tab. You can select Indian Rupees and it translates into rupees. If you are buying both, then there is a 10% discount I guess. There is a trial option too.

Have a great time teaching your LOs!

Shaman - Great to know IAHP has a course scheduled in India in 2010! Will find out more about that.

Khush - Welcome aboard! Hope you have a good time here..

Regards,
Questers

hi,i'm vani, mother of 5month old baby.initially i showed him power point presentation of bits.when he was 3months old.he showed great interest and enjoyed a lot. Then i shifted to dots. But now i found that according to glenn doman , single words has to be shown first, after completing some 200 words we have to shift to couplets and so on.so words come first, then pictures and then dots.but my baby doesnt show much interest in words now. Also Doman says 5flash cards for 5 secs and after a gap of some 1hr or so,we have to show the next 5 cards.we have to start with interesting wortds, then self (body parts),then objects and so on.
I'm now confused as my boy doesnt show much interest in words now.also 5cards for 5sec,i feel is not sufficient for him.but when i show presentations with pictures he is very much interested.
so,shall i continue with words or dots or bits???will increasing the number of words help???
i show words on monitor only.he is not interested in looking at cards...
can nybody help???

Jyoti - Good that you have found this site! It gives you a lot of information on how to go about it. If you have any questions, shoot away. Some of us will be available to answer them.

Vani - Welcome aboard.

Yes as per Doman, reading comes first, then math, then encyclopedic knowledge (picture cards).

But the number of words is not just 5. You start with 5 and you increase it to 25 gradually. Please check my post to Preethi in this same thread regarding this. You will add 5 new cards everyday and retire 5 old ones, maintaining 25 cards to be shown in total. Number of cards is just a guideline. No hard and fast rules here.

Regarding the time gap, Doman does not say 1 hour specifically. You have to spread it out into 3 sessions throughout the day, say morning, afternoon, and evening.

Doman suggests to start with categories, but again no hard and fast rules. You can start with the words you think will be appropriate for him.

Perhaps you can keep pictures aside for sometime until he gets interested in reading and math. This is because words and dots may not captivate a child as much as a picture does.

You can continue the powerpoint presentations. You can use those cards for problem-solving sessions.

For more clear and detailed info, I would suggest you read "How to teach your baby to read"
and "How to teach your baby math" written by Dr. Glenn Doman.

Regards,
Questers.
