Vaccines

Hi everyone...
have u heard of Rota virus vaccine...I did a little research on it and found that it should be given to babies but i have no idea when...
Has anyone given this vaccine to their kid? Which month should it be given?
Plus..have u also given pneumonia vaccine to yr kid? what age?

Yes, we did. I think rotavirus and pneumococcal are given around 6 weeks, though we gave at 14 weeks. Totally 3 doses of pneumococcal and 2 doses of rotavirus within 24 weeks. There is a pneumococcal booster given again at 15 months I guess. Your paed should have the vaccination schedule, do ask for it.

No we did not, we do not vaccinate for safety reasons.

Thanks Questers! I'll speak to my doc..my baby is 5 mnths...so i guess the age for these vaccines is crossed...i'll find out from my doc if we can still give her the vaccines...

Some of my distant family lives there, but we are not, -- between a few different 3rd world countries with a little break in-between now,

In some countries we lived it is also a practice, other parents we knew each made their individual decisions. There are way too many factors involved in each individual situation. And the sum total of those factors will be something to weigh it out for us. We are really concerned about our little ones safety, so we just looking for the best protection, like I am sure all of us parents here...

Can someone from India just share their vaccine schedule. My son is 20 month old, we have not given him either rota virus or pneumonia vaccines. Also someone just mentioned to me that we need to give other vaccines also which were not on the list of the hospital where i take my son to. i am at my office currently and do not have the vaccine list with me. i will make a list of my vaccines tomorrow.

hi jayashree...
my baby is 5 mnths old...so far she's received Hepatitis, BCG and oral polio vaccines in doses from the hospital...Here in Mumbai I also give her oral polio vaccine from the govt organised drives...(My Doc suggested that I give her that) mostly it happens on a sunday of every month...
Next she'll receive her vaccines when she's 9 mths...

Thanks Questers, this site would definitely help. So far I have given my son the following vaccines -
BCG, Oral Polio Vaccine & Hepatitis B vaccine 1st dose at birth.
DPT 1st dose, Oral Polio & Hep B 2nd dose at 6 weeks
DPT 2nd dose, Oral Polio 3rd dose at 10 weeks
DPT 3rd dose, Oral Polio - 4th dose at 14 weeks
Oral Polio 5th dose, Hep B 3rd dose at 8 months
Measles Vaccine at 10 months
MMR (Measles Mumps & Rubella) at 16 months

My 1st DPT Booster dose is due in Jan 2010 i.e. 22 months.

Additionally, i have not given him anything else. is the monthly polio vaccine essential?

Do you mean the one mentioned by Khush? I am not sure what she means by monthly polio. As long as you give as per the required schedule, it is enough. Also we are asked to give during the pulse polio campaigns (initiated by the govt) whenever it happens. It does not happen monthly though.

Questers! Thanks for sharing the useful schedule...

Hi Jayashri.. My doc told me that the OPV given by govt is of different strain...hence we give it to my daughter apart from the required schedule...it happens monthly and they usually come door to door...they also have polio booths...i have one right next to my bldg...
I'm not sure if its important to give..though i know quiet a few ppl who've not given OPV to their kids.

Hi Questers, Yes i mean i have not given him even the Pulse Polio Campaign of the Govt.. I am not certain about the door-to-door campaigns - is it safe to give the kids the same. I gave him a OPV from the door once and he got fever - it cud be just simple fever or it cud be linked to the dose given to him I am not sure but he was having fever for around 3 days, i gave him medicines then.

You know some time back there was a lot of news about deaths of children after the govt. campaigns, hence i am afraid.

Also my son has developed some rashes in his left leg, which keeps vanishing with a cream, but comes back very soon. My doc said that it often happens in many children and will become ok within a year or so - does any one else face similar problems?

The vaccines mentioned by Jayashri as complulsory vaccines....

The rotavirus and pneumococcal or there is one for diarrhea ( i dont remember its name )
are optional vaccine.

I did not give any optional vaccine to my babies.
