I received Little Reader/Little Math Bundle in early Sept. I'm using it with an older special needs child (6) as part of his home school curriculum. I've been using Little Reader for 2 months, and it's incredible! He's really learning the words! I wanted to get a good start with Little Reader, Handwriting without Tears PreK, Bible story lessons, etc, so I waited until last week to begin using Little Math. I thought it would have a similar set up as Little Reader, but it seems like it differs a good bit, and I don't yet understand the set up of Little Math.
In Little Reader, everything I need is already right there... all I need to do is begin the Daily Lesson, select Session 1 or 2, and it runs through the three part lesson:
A. Word Flash, B. Multisensory, and C. Picture Flash. The Multisensory is his favorite part, and he likes to control the mouse and click through it at his own pace. But with Little Math, under Courses, Day 1 Lesson, Session 1 has nothing more than 3 Picture Flash sequences: one of pictures depciting 1 object thru 5 objects in correct numerical sequence, one of a random sequence, and one of correct numerical sequence with triplicate pictures. That hardly seems like much of a lesson.
So, I checked out the Numbers tab and the Math tab. I thought Numbers would teach recognition of numerals, but it is just more object representation of numerical quantities. Then down the list quite a ways, I found Numerals. That is good. But the first one is for Numbers 1 to 10, so it doesn't coordinate with Day 1 Course Lesson that teaches only 1 to 5. And likewise, under Math, I find Picture Additon +1 that goes all the way up through 10 + 1, but not one that only goes from 1 through 5. And I haven't seen any addition using numerals, only pictures. I was looking for one with numerals plus objects and then additon with just the numerals.
I realize the Little Math program was developed to teach math to infants and to imprint on their brains instant recognition of quantitive value when they see a group of objects. It wasn't developed to be a home school course in math. So, I will probably need to adapt it in some way, but I have no idea how to do that. For example, there is no Multisensory component comparable to the Little Reader Multisensory component. There is no animation. It is going to be difficult to hold his attention when lesson after lesson is fast flashing pictures of objects or heads of babies. He tries to say the numbers along with the voice, but it is too fast for him, especially during the part where it is pictures in random numerical order, so he can't even anticipate the next number. I don't know if there is any way to slow it down some. There is no component of the program where he can control the pace by clicking to the next one when he is ready. At least from what I have seen so far. I am sure that there is a whole lot that I don't yet know about the Little Math program. But I haven't the time to fully read and digest every tutorial or question and answer looking for something applicable to my need. Can anyone expediate the process for me by cluing me in on the features of this program that I may not be aware of or ideas of how I can tailor it?
