the little guy thinks it's about what the objects are, not about quantity

I have been using LR with my 1 1/2 year old for about a month now.  He LOVES it!

But, he's finding LM frustrating and doesn't get it.  He doesn't like the fast flashing.  He really enjoys the multisensory portion of LR because we can pause long enough for him to really look at the pictures and he can say what they are.  He likes to point & try to say what he's seeing.   He doesn't seem to understand at all that LM is about quantity.  I'm apprehensive about moving forward when he doesn't understand the concept. 

I've just figured out how to show circles only.  I'll try that tomorrow.  If he doesn't get that it's about quantity and is saying what he's seeing as he sees things, should I continue through the lessons?  Any tips?

Also, how do you adjust the speed when in override?

You can slow down the autoforward by clicking on the Settings cogwheel icon next to the Autoforwrad button, or inside the Override settings.  Or you can simply turn AF off and manually forward the slides.

In order to get something you're showing, you may have to show it a number of times first, and showing them variations so that they can start to decipher what is important and not important about what you're showing them.

This is one of the reasons why variation is so important, and LR/LM has variety as one of its core principles.  Hence we randomize icons so we're telling you that "5" could come in red dots, blue squares, or green monkeys.

To emphasize this, that's why Quantity lesson 3 shows the same number consecutively using 3 different icons, shapes, and colors, and sizes.  We're saying, this is a 3, this is also a 3, and this too is a 3. They're all telling you the same thing. So after a while, they figure out that, aha, icons don't matter, shapes don't matter, colors don't matter, sizes dont' matter, etc.  Hey look, that cluster of objects over there would also be "3"!  This is not somethign they necessarily get immediatley, but may take time, because you are teaching by letting them figure it out themselves, not via explanation.

I had been sticking to the first lessons because he didn't understand.  It sounds like you don't recommend just showing circles then, huh.  I tried that this morning & my son kept saying "bubble!"  Definitely cute, but was missing the point.  I'll switch back to random icons.  I'll try going slower.  do you recommend staying away from counting the objects?
