Do you LOVE Little Musician!? I have seen a few parents commenting on the wonderful progress their children are making with LMs, so I wanted to start a thread to add them all to one place. Feel free to make it brief or detailed as you like, including things like:

-How old was your child when you began? How long have you been using LMs?

-What progress have you seen in auditory pitch recognition? Visual note recognition?

-What special tips and tricks are working best for your family?

-Anything else you want to share

-Videos and pictures if you have them! smile

-What about YOUR musical progress?

Age: We began LMs when Lily was 2.5, she demonstrated PP at about 3 years old, after about 6 months of use. She seems to have  acquired it somewhere between 4-6 months of use.

Frequency of Use: We used LMs at least 5 days a week, twice per day. We used the beta version which was primarily brief chord exposure and the bulk of our lessons was singing nursery rhymes in solfege.

Parent's Musical Background None. Never played an instrument, never learned to read music, started from square one. Everything I have learned about music was learned through LMs or through other random children's music DVD's here and there.

Access to an Instrument: We purchased a tabletop keyboard about 4 months into use and put colored notes on the keys to match the notes in LMs. She would then play her songs on the keyboard after she memorized them all by heart. She was naturally drawn to this and needed no coaxing, she loved it (and still does).

Tracking Pitch Progress: I asked her to guess the keys on the piano before we started using the program, and then tested her pitch about every month or every other month. Sometimes I would play games with m&m's or skittles using colors that corresponded to the note to gauge her progress.  I tried to "test" her in a fun way that she would be excited about it and not feel pressure. I would also let her ask me the notes first so I could model the behavior. I always did pretty poorly.  LOL  We later played games with colored plastic balls as well.  In the beginning, she showed absolutely no of being "naturally" gifted with PP and probably got zero of the notes correct.

Other Progress We have since moved into focusing on identifying black keys, note placement on the staff, and chord identification. She can now correctly place notes and read music on the majority of the G Clef. She can play songs on the piano, first with one finger and now she is beginning to play with all of her fingers.  In LMs, if I change the piano in Free Play to be any instrument  she can correctly identify the notes regardless, as well as in a car alarm. She also spontaneously began to transpose solfege nursery rhymes on the piano after about 7 months of using LMs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Age: Owen began using LMs at age 1 year, 7 months. He demonstrated pitch accuracy after about  8-10 months of use, it's difficult to approximate because I wasn't testing him very frequently.

Frequency of Use: We used LMs at least 5 days a week, twice per day. We used the beta version in the beginning which was primarily brief chord exposure and the bulk of our lessons were nursery rhymes in sung solfege. We have been a bit less consistent in the last 2-3 months on account of preschool challenges (time), I think he would have progressed a bit faster if I had been a little more consistent.

Tracking Pitch Progress: We primarily played and tested using colored plastic balls and more recently, rainbow colored match box cars which he LOVES.

Access to an Instrument: Owen started playing on the piano and plunking out songs with one finger probably around age 2-2.5 years old, so for the last 6 months on and off although he is not as naturally drawn to the piano as Lily, his interest is increasing.

Other Progress Owen can correctly place many notes on the Treble Clef, especially on the bottom half of it, and can correctly name some of them even without colors. He sings many nursery rhymes in solfege by memory and  really loves music in general. He also plunks out some nursery rhymes using one finger on the piano. He is beginning to identify the notes on the piano without visual cues (colors).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can now read simple music and correctly place notes on the treble clef. I can also hear the differences in the chords and can correctly identify them most of the time. I think my pitch has improved since beginning and I can locate all of the notes on the piano without visual color cues. I was excited to see progress in my knowledge and capabilities because I've never even understood music at a basic level until now.  smile

Age: We downloaded the beta version of LMs in September last year, when Ella was 3 years 2 months old, but was not able to use it consistently due to constant traveling and moving halfway around the world. We started using it regularly as part of our daily activities one month ago, when Ella was a few days shy of 4.

Frequency of Use: We use it 2-3 times a week and do 2-3 lessons back-to-back. After the daily lessons, we also do additional free play exercises and sing nursery songs in solfege.

Parent's Musical Background: I learned to play the piano as a child but haven't touched a keyboard for years, until I started teaching Ella. I can read notes but very slowly and painstakingly due to lack of practice. My husband taught himself to play the guitar and was in an amateur band for a few years.

Access to Instruments: We have a digital piano, a digital keyboard, a violin in Ella's size, as well as adult-sized acoustic and electric guitars.

Tracking Pitch Progress: Well, she definitely did NOT have perfect pitch 3 months ago. She also does not like to guess the keys played on the piano. I have tried using colored balls, unifix cubes, small dolls, etc. I recently got some new toy cars in the LMs colors to see if she will let me "test" her. BUT, one recent afternoon while she was watching a Little Einsteins episode that was playing Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony, she went to get her violin and started playing it by ear. Since then, she has also been able to play several more pieces of classical music, both on the piano and violin, in at least 2 different keys (sometimes 3), including Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker March and Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No.1! She can also easily play almost any nursery rhyme/song by ear on the piano and violin and can transpose to different keys. Her favorite musical pastime nowadays is going through all the Little Einsteins episodes I have downloaded on her Ipad and playing along to the classical music in each episode on her violin. Oh, and by the way, she can also accurately tune her own violin before each practice session!  big grin

Looking forward to hearing more about other parents' experiences and the musical progress their kids are making with LMs!  yes

UPDATE:
Well, it is starting to look like Ella can do her best work when it is late at night. rolleyes  After her recent late-nighter finishing half of her Singapore math workbook, she did it again, this time with music. Last night, I thought she was drifting off to sleep when she suddenly sat bolt upright, and told me, "Mama, you know, the first notes of 'Puff the Magic Dragon' is D D D D. I need to try it out on my violin. NOW." So she went and grabbed her violin and proceeded to play the entire song by ear in the key of D. Then she asked for a piece of paper because she just "needed" to write it all down. She also wrote the title by herself with only 1 spelling mistake (see picture 1), I didn't even know she can spell words with consonant blends like 'dr' already! Next, she wanted to try the song out on the piano. That was where I drew the line and told her to go to sleep.  dry

This morning, she was up really early and the first thing she did was go to the piano and play the entire song, this time transposing it to the key of C!!! Then she got the blank staff paper that was lying on top of the piano and wrote out the notes again, this time using note-heads in the LMs colors. (see picture 2) And that was how I found her when I came down to breakfast.  laugh

On and off throughout the rest of the day, she was writing down the rest of the pieces she had figured out on her violin - like The Nutcracker March, Morning Mood, Arrietty's Song, etc - in the new music notebook I gave her, in both note names and notes on the staff paper. She says her next "project" is going to be writing her own story (she is also very into making up stories and creative writing these days) and writing her own music to accompany it. I just hope she doesn't decide to do it all in the middle of the night again!  LOL

P.S. The music in the pictures are all in the key of D major. I haven't taught her how to write key signatures yet.
