In the current LMs beta build, the child learns about various instruments as part of the "Knowledge" lessons. This is the sequence of slides for these instruments lessons (let's use piano as an example):
1. Display = the word, "piano", Sound = voice saying "piano"
2. Display = picture of a piano, Sound = short clip of a piano being played
3. Display = animation of a piano, Sound = another short clip of a piano being played
In Slide 3, the animation is always the same, regardless of what sound file is being played. Obviously, the movement of the animation is not going to match the sound clip. While it's less obvious for instruments like the violin, it is more obvious for instruments like drums.
There's been discussion as to whether the mis-match in visuals and sound is doing more harm than good for the child.
One alternative is this - when we show the animation, instead of playing a music clip, we could simply just play the voice pronunciation again. So it would be:
1. Display = the word, "piano", Sound = voice saying "piano"
2. Display = picture of a piano, Sound = short clip of a piano being played
3. Display = animation of a piano, Sound = another voice saying "piano"
We can change this quite easily.
I would like to get votes from everyone, and to hear your opinions on this.
Personally, I have no issue with the mismatch (otherwise I wouldn't have chosen to have done it this way in the first place
), and I find more value in having my child hear more clips of the instrument rather than the voice pronunciation.
But that's just my subjective opinion, and not even a very strong opinion. So please let us know what you think to help us decide whether this is something we should change!
