Spontaneously Singing Solfege & Piano Progress
«

The benefits of LMs just continue on! DD has been enrolled in piano now for about 5 months. I am continually amazed how much her early training beforehand has helped her. She came into the class able to read music effectively and this has allowed her to focus on learning how to use her fingers correctly, rather than trying to focus on using her fingers AND learning to read music AND becoming familiar with rhythm, etc etc. Her early music familiarization at home has really enabled her to blossom and "apply her knowledge" on an instrument. It's kind of like learning to ride a balance bike first, THEN learning to pedal on a traditional bicycle, thus isolating the skills effectively. I have absolutely no worries about her keeping up with the pace of the class, and instead we are supplementing at home because she is showing her potential and progressing so nicely (with dedicated practice of course).
So today, Lily began randomly singing solfege to the tune of Minuet from Handels' Royal Fireworks Music (which we have been listening to a lot lately). I went to the piano and asked her to sing it again so I could play it. I only got the first 10 notes or so out of her but they were correct! I am amazed she is able to spontaneously sing solfege at will. She tried to do this previously and it was just random solfege nonsense of a 2 year old having fun. Now, it's legit. I am guessing this skill is not fully developed yet, and I don't know if she could figure out this song because she's heard it 3-5 times a week for the last month, or if she can do it for any song. This would have never been possible without Little Musician!

Just wanted to update this with a video because I am a proud Mommy after Lily's Halloween "Monster Concert today.
I found out late last night they needed the kids to play 2 songs instead of one, so she learned the chords to Mary had a Little Lamb this morning!
She had already known the melody by heart from singing LMs nursery songs.

Wonderful video - and what a gorgeous outfit
She is playing so confidently. It is lovely to see.
So interesting to hear that she was able to sing solfege to a melody. That's an amazing skill. Do you do any particular activities with LMs that might promote that? My DD is able to accurately pick out do and the chord do mi so but tends to guess quite wildly with the rest.

I've been watching this thread all along, and just realized that I didn't share in the congratulations. Lily is doing exceptionally well. Thank you for sharing your video, it's given me a few ideas.

She was dressed as Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
Is it wrong that one of the best parts of Lily being in piano is picking out a new dresses for her recitals?
For LMs, we sang nursery songs in solfege 5 days a week for maybe 6-8 months or so when we first began using LMs. We still do now, just not quite as frequently. It's actually our favorite part of LMs overall. To find them, go to Play Edit > Music Notes>Children's Songs and choose Rainbow or Non-rainbow notes. Recently, we began practicing our songs veeeery slowly using curwen hand signs and I am excited that they are finally picking them up, Lily more so than Owen at the moment, and she uses them for fun. Yesterday Lily started excitedly figuring out chords for her Yamaha Book one homework on her own, I told her teacher today and she said to just let her run with it. She went through a phase where daily practice was a bit of a bear, but now she seems to be finding pride in her hard work so I am grateful things are "clicking."
Thank you all for your kind words!

I can't wait to start on the recital dresses! Although we will probably just be doing recitals for family members at the moment. Still, no reason not to make an occasion of it - DD is currently Disney princess obsessed so we will be able to have a lot of fun with this
Actually, making recitals fun is a great idea and I think we might work towards doing a recital for Grandma wearing a fun costume once she's a bit more confident. this could be a brilliant thing to work towards.
Thank you so much for this suggestion of singing along to nursery rhymes (and I suspect you may well have mentioned in the past but I didn't pick up on it). I can't believe that I did not find the sing along section of LMs earlier - Doh!!
I have vaguely thought many times that singing along would be great- I don't know why i was not more proactive to find this. I have found the songs and we play them using Soft Mozart solfege icons (in rainbow colours). I don't know about you but we had to really slow down the tempo on most of the pieces - even slow practice was way to fast to learn on. For us to have a chance of singing along it needs to be between 50 and 80 depending on the song and how many half notes etc. I guess it gets easier as you learn the songs in solfege.
We are now approaching the end of the first semester. We have all learned a lot although the chords are still quite difficult (for everyone - me included). I'm not sure whether it's best to repeat this semester or just push on to the next one anyway. I don't want to switch her off or get bored by too much repetition - but also concerned whether we should press on without fully mastering the first semester's knowledge. In LR and LM we moved on regardless and then came back to the beginning after the full curriculum. I'd be grateful for your thoughts here.
Thanks again!

Wonderful video, TmT! Lily is adorable!
Ella's primary motivating factor for participating in violin concerts, recitals, and abacus competitions IS getting to wear the pretty dresses. If she could wear a princess dress to her swim team competitions, she would!!!

lzp - I suggest you carry on with the course. Sem 2 will continue to bring back stuff from before. If you feel you want to reinforce what's already been taught, a much better way to do that would be to go into the Music Notes section and find the lessons you want to repeat, and play that outside of the curriculum lessons. All curriculum lessons can be found there.
If necessary, create a new folder with the lessons you want to 're-teach', and just play through the lessons of that folder when you want.
