LR hangs while playing lessons

The LR hangs after playing it for 5 mins. When i restart the programme, the same thing happens. My baby cries when it hangs! help!!

Hi Shaenyeo,

Can you let us know whether it hangs on any particular type of lesson (eg., Word Flash or Multisensory?), or during any particular type of slide (like just before showing videos?), or is it totally random?

Also, can you please create a Diagnostic Report:
- from Windows START menu
-> All Programs
-> BrillKids (folder)
-> Little Reader (folder)
-> find "Diagnostic" item. 

It will generate a file called "Little_Reader_2010_...zip" in your C:\...\My Documents\BrillKids\Tools folder.  Please attach that to your reply.

I am also having the same problem that lesson is hanging. Start from lesson Day 21~Multisensory, after the action word "sleep" played, it doesn't keep going, hangs on the "sleep" animation, sound repeat.  I hv to press "Esc" to stop and start the next lesson.  The same problem to Day 22~24.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. In case any of you are still experiencing this issue, please try to to follow the steps below:

Make sure you have the latest Little Reader installed

How to check your LR version: Open your Little Reader and click on the "Help" (upper left corner of LR) and click on "Software Information." The latest version number is v.1.6.340.

If you don't have the latest version of Little Reader, please do the following:

1. Visit your Account Management page.
2. Download the latest version of Little Reader.
3. Install over your existing Little Reader.

Repair your existing LR installation

1.   Go to your computer’s Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
2.   On the list, double-click on BrillKids Little Reader.
3.   Choose to "Repair" the installation.

After doing this, please restart Little Reader and try to play the lesson where it hangs again. In the meantime, we'll be looking at your Diagnostic Reports to see what is causing the issue.

My current LR version is 1.6.316 and thus I follow yr instruction to get the latest version. After the procedure to download the latest version, then re-install my exisiting LR and it requires me to insert the installation CD.  I click "Repair" and after the complete installation, check again the latest version is still 1.6.316 and not able to get updated the Version.  It still hangs at the same position Day 21 "multisensory~sleep".   
I tried to re-install again with the installation CD but finally all my history and personal categories lost.  Now, here is the new lesson from Day 1~9 (sem.1) .  oh ! My God ! 

Now, how can I get it back all my history at this stage ?? I hv finished lesson Day 26 today.

Hi shaenyeo, it seems that we have not received any reply from you yet. Does your LR work fine now? If not, please send us your Diagnostic Report too:

• From your START Menu, go to 'All Programs'
• Open the 'BrillKids' folder
• Open the 'Little Reader' folder
• Find and run the 'Diagnostic' tool
   - A black window will display collecting your system information. Please be patient during this process.
• Once the Diagnostic tool has finished, it will open up a window containing a file named "Little Reader_[DATE].zip"
   - Attach this file to your reply (simply click on the 'Choose File' button at the bottom of your post composition page and locate this file)

For cowboy2009:

The latest version of Little Reader is 1.6.340 -- this is different from the version you currently have in the installation CD you bought last time (which is 1.6.316).
Kindly download the installer for the latest version by going to this page:

Go to STEP 1: SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD and click on the download button to get your installer file (you may check the version number of the file you are about to download by referring to the "Download the latest version of Little Reader ( ### )" text link right below the download button). After downloading, open the file and double-click on "Little_Reader_install.exe" to begin the installation.

After this, you may re-import your lesson content (either by using your Content Discs, or by downloading the files from STEP 3 of the page above). To mark your previously played lessons, simply highlight the lesson folders (or specific lessons), right-click on them and choose "Mark folder played" (or "Mark played").

When you were doing the "Repair" for Little Reader, did you check the box for "Restore content to Default" in the Wizard? If you did, then this would have deleted the lessons you previously created (as well as any customizations you made to the default Categories and playback settings) -- unfortunately, you will need to redo those personalized categories. 


If upgrading Little Reader doesn't fix the problem, kindly try repairing your .NET Framework by following the instructions in this post:

If you are still having problems after doing this, please download and run the following file:

Upon opening this file, go to the 'Troubleshooting' tab and click on the 'Restore standard DirectX Codecs' button. After this, try opening Little Reader and see if it works fine now.

Dear Kezia,

Thanks for your reply. I hv downloaded the latest v 1.6.340 and installed successfully. Now, my LR version is 1.6.340
I also repaired LR program and then I hv done as below :
1. Played history ~ All the previous played lessons, I follow yr instruction to right click on each Day lesson folder and mark
    played, must need  to mark one by one for each day. I finished at Day 26, that means I right click and mark for 26
    times.     However, the counting history starts from "0" for each word. Is it correct??
2. Personal categories ~ I am lucky that parts of the personal categories are still in the Import-Export folder but I hv to re-
    import for each personal category one by one.  I did 20 times for 20 category folders. Some of my customizations are lost
    and I hv to download again from the forum library  > .
3. The hanging problem on Action words "crawl", "sleep" seems fixed and not hangs moe. Able to go to next word BUT it goes
    not that smooth. Sound is about 0.5 second delayed, i.e. next word shows but still the sound of previous word.  Most
    happen on the word "sleep".

I will re-start LR program with my baby tomorrow and will check for several days.

I want to ask, in case, I need to re-do as above point 1 & 2, is there any quick way to mark played for all lessons and re-import for all personal categories, not doing one by one ???

Hi cowboy2009,

Yes, you can actually select many lesson folders at a time to mark them as "played" -- just click on the first item (Day 001 folder), press and hold your SHIFT key, and then click on the last item (Day 25 folder).

You can then right-click and choose "Mark folder played", and all these folders would be instantly marked as played. 

Regarding the Playback Stats (playback history), currently the "mark played" feature simply just marks your played lessons, and thus it won't affect the playback count shown in your Playback Stats screen.

As for your personal and downloaded categories, unfortunately the only way is to really open your import files one at a time. We do plan to add an import-by-batch feature in the next version of LR, though. Also, as I've previously mentioned, choosing to "Restore content to Default" during the Repair would change everything back to their default settings (this is similar to the "Restore Factory Settings" feature in cellphones and other gadgets), so you will also need to redo your customized settings.

* Try doing "4. Update your computer's codec" first and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't help, please try any of the other suggestions.
