Playing more than one soundclip for one picture

Dear Tech Support,

I am setting up a category for Noorani Lesson 6, which each file will have 1 jpeg, and 3 soundclips.  How can I program LR to play 2 or 3 soundclips for one jpeg, for "picture only" playback settings, please?

Also, I think I figured something out - that in the playback settings, if I select the number of pics/vid to be 3, it will play the quantity of soundclips I selected.

Now - before, I would create a category with a the jpeg and one type of soundclip; and another category with the same jpeg and another soundclip.  And then create my playlists based on either/or category.

Is there a more efficient way to do this?  I think I can select which soundclip I want to play when in the playlists, yes? 

If there is a way for you to look/listen to my computer, I can run through a part of a set, and you can see what I am trying to do, and then tell me the most efficient and effective way to do it, it would be much appreciated.

There's no specific functionality to play more than 1 picture audio file for 1 picture.  Right now, what you can do is to play multiple pictures, but each picture would play a different PA (if there's more than 1 PA). What you could do is to add the same picture more than once, so that it would play back the same picture with the next PA.

Hey there KL. 

How are you? 

Actually, I set up one jpeg and three soundclips, and in playback settings, I select "picture only" and number of pics/video's show to represent the number of sound clips I want; and "audio on";

and when "playing", the image will appear along with the two soundclips in the order I arrange, and on to the next jpeg . . .   

. .. although I am using version 1.5.257 and planned to upgrade once I complete setting up the daily sets for Noorani Lesson 6 and backup everything up.

so, I hope it will work in the newer version as well . . .

Dear BrillKids,

As I just completed setting up Noorani Lesson 9 category file, with one jpeg, and 3 sounclips for each jpeg; I was playing it back to check it, and found that the soundclips have mysteriously been reordered differently than I originally set it up. 

I originally set it up as:  Soundclip 1, soundclip 2, soundclip 3

and when playing it back, it reordered to;  soundclip 3, soundclip 1, soundclip 2.

So, now I have to manually put the soundclips back in the correct order again for each jpeg/file - and there are 103 in this category!    This is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened when setting up a category, and is more than annoying at this point because this is less than efficient, to say the least.     

After re-checking them, it seems that about 1/3 were out of order, which makes no sense, because I when setting it up, I put them in a specific order to begin with and don't understand how they get mixed up?!?

Please advise.

Hi Ayesha,

This is caused by the "rotate media" playback option where LR will play the next media file (in the list) the next time you play that particular Category -- this is also when it rearranges your media files.

To prevent this from happening again, I suggest that you turn it off instead (it's turned on by default):
 - Go to the Playback screen and select Categories
 - Select the Category you want and toggle the Playback Settings tab
 - Find "Rotate Media" and click once on the box beside it to turn it off

And I thought I was going crazy!   

For playback settings: 

Playback mode:  picture only
Number of pics/videos:  2 (or 3)
Order:  According to list
Pronunciation:  On (and the rotate media and other options are selected, AND grayed out)

I go through phases of setting up a category:  create word file with jpeg; then later I will add the soundclips (after I manually split the soundtrack to get the individual sounclips); when these two steps are complete, is when I will change the playback settings to check the category. 

What should I do differently to prevent the reordering of the soundclips I originally set up?  When I set up the individual word file with the jpeg?  or when I add the soundclips?

Haha, don't worry, you seem very sane to me!

From the phases you described, I'd say that sequence of steps is pretty OK. There's no big problem with doing one thing before another, but definitely the very first thing you need to do is to create/add Words to your new Category -- you can actually create and save Words without adding any media to them. Anything else that follows (like adding media files, changing playback settings, or reordering soundclips) can be done in any order, whichever way works for you best.

To prevent the reordered soundclips (or any media file) issue, I suggest that you do not playback your Category while you are still editing or finalizing it, especially if you haven't turned "Rotate Media" off yet. Otherwise, if "Rotate Media" is still turned on and you play your Category, LR will reorder the media files and you will have to redo the file order for all the words in that Category again. If you really want to play back your Category while editing it (I assume you are trying to test how the media files look/sound like when these are played back), then it's probably best to turn "Rotate Media" off from the start.

Again, I'd like to emphasize that you can keep editing a few things anytime, so it's fine to just turn "Rotate Media" off before you get to the part where you start fixing all the Playback Settings for your Category. I'm not sure if you're using LR 2.0 [BETA] now, but if you haven't upgraded yet, I'd like to let you know that there's a new "test" feature when editing words now, so this could solve your problem.

Hi Kezia,

I am having another issue with the category files of words consisting of only jpegs at this point, and I will add mp3 clips later; these are being mysteriously rearranged - after I unselected "rotate media" from the playback selections for the category itself (and not within the individual files themselves because it is only one jpeg per word file).

I created Noorani Lesson 10 category with these as seperate files (this is one example of a letter with 3 forms; 28 letters total):

Hamzah Fathah Baa Sukoon 18.2.1
Hamzah Kasrah Baa Sukoon 18.2.2
Hamzah Dhammah Baa Sukoon 18.2.3

And I am adding the following new files (which by default are created at the bottom of a long list of words):

Sound of Hamzah Fathah Baa Sukoon; 18.2.1
Sound of Hamzah Kasrah Baa Sukoon; 18.2.2

Sound of Hamzah Fathah Baa Sukoon 18.2.1 ii

So I highlight all 5 new files, and move them upwards to the first set of files, and put them in the following order:

I begin to go to the next set of letters (28 total) and do the same, and then when moving the new set up to arrange them in the correct order, I find that the previous set is out of order and some are at the bottom of the list?!? I rearranged them, before working on the next set.

I have a lot of files to add, that require concentration, and this wackiness from LR is not helping me with efficiency or effectiveness at this point - and this did not occur before the most recent upgrade (and I have not installed 2.0 beta yet - and am afraid to do so now.)

I have completed 4 sets of letters (baa, taa, thaa, jeem), and have 24 x 5 new files = 120 new files to be added to this category.  I even rebooted my laptop and when I reopened LR, the last set of files I added, some were in place, some were moved down, and 2 were at the bottom of the word file list?!?  I rearranged them.

I began working on the next letter, HAa, (and now i find myself double checking the order each time) and found that some of the new files for thaa and jeem are at the bottom of the list again AFTER I have rearranged them 4 times already?!?  and the rotate media is off?!?

I also noticed that when I have one word selected and the image shows in the preview pane, if I move my mouse cursor over another word, it hightlights it in a slightly lighter color?  But I am not moving them with the cursor, rather I am just using the cursor to read as a pointer; I only move the selected word/file by using the "up/down" arrows at the bottom of the center screen panel. 

6:35 p.m. EST > Okay - I keep modifying this post, to share what happens each time.  I added HAa, khaa, and now I am adding the letter daal; after I add the 5 new words and put them in the correct order; i decided to select the 1st word in the list (which is Noorani Lesson 10), and clicked on "add new word" and when I was at the bottom, the words #5 and #3 from the set on khaa were at the bottom of the list again, and the first word of the daal set was in the middle of the khaa set (daal was moved up in between khaa set)?  And I don't know HOW this is happening???  aaaggggghhhhhhh!!!  this is agonizing.   

6:46 p.m. EST > i was creating daal, and had to rearrang khaa again and there is no logic to this . . . as far as i can see . . .

8:21 p.m. EST > this strange rearrangement keeps happening when i select the 5 new words and move them up together and then rearrange the set in the proper order, within the larger list of words . . . so i decided to move each new word individually into it's proper place, and it stays? . . . in the previous version of LR, i could select a group and move them and rearrange them within a subgroup of the list; but when i do that now, is when it keeps rearranging the order (4 and 5 times!!!) . . . please fix this bug in LR category setup, because it was quicker for me in the previous version . . . i am also very concerned because when i create Noorani Lesson 11 category - i do not want to go through this, because of the volume of words is larger, with there being 18 forms for each letter x 28 letters = 504 word files!!!

Would you please explain what is happening, so I can prevent this - because I don't have time for LR's version of musical chairs with me adding words to a category (and I have not even "played" it back . . i am just setting it up?!?).

Thanks for the detailed update!

Not quite sure why this happened, so I have a few questions / suggestions:

• Where do you rearrange / re-order the words in this particular Category:
   1. Inside the Edit Category window?
   2. Or, just in the word list (as displayed in your Playback screen for Categories)?
• Either way, can you please try rearranging your Category's words the other way (the one you haven't tried doing yet)? Does the same problem happen?

If you were rearranging the words while inside the Edit Category window, then this auto-rearranging problem should not happen, because whatever word order you have set in the Edit Category window will be the "default" playback order of that Category. Do let me know how trying the suggestion above works for you.

In case this is actually a bug in LR 1.6, then perhaps it's better to upgrade to 2.0 -- please backup your files before upgrading. You don't need to uninstall LR first nor delete anything, as the LR 2.0 installer will do an upgrade of your current installation (while preserving your data).
