If you are experiencing problems with sound not playing back for audio files or in video, or video is not playing, then the most likely reason is that there are codec problems on your system.

Please do this as the first resort:

UPDATE YOUR COMPUTER'S CODEC

Download and install the following codec pack (very commonly used and widely known FFDSHOW codec pack) to see if it helps:

During setup, there will be a page called "Select Additional Tasks", and you will see "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow" and "Decode the following audio formats with ffdshow".  PLEASE CHECK BOTH BOXES.

After finishing installation, no need to do anything else. Just reboot Windows and give it a try (or may not need to reboot Windows, but at least restart LR).

Dear KL,

  Me again.  Okay - I finally figured out how to edit/split tracks in Audacity using Labels and exported them successfully.  Then I uploaded the .wav file to my corresponding .jpg pictures in LR and can play/hear the sound in the editing box for each word file. 

And then I cannot hear it when playing it back?  And I already updated the codec packs from before - and went ahead and did again anyways, and it did not have the following:

"During setup, there will be a page called "Select Additional Tasks", and you will see "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow" and "Decode the following audio formats with ffdshow".  PLEASE CHECK BOTH BOXES."

I restarted the laptop and it still is not working.  I then tried to use .mp3 format of the soundclips instead of .wav and it was unsuccessful.  And it is strange because the BK courses work fine.  I selected in the playback settings for play picture only and force picture audio to play - and still to no avail.

I plan to upgrade to a newer laptop (from XP to Vista) as soon as my husband configures his new one, and will probably add 2 GB RAM to make it 4 GB total.  In the meantime, what do you advise, on this older laptop that has 1.86 GHz and 0.99 GB RAM, please?

Also, can you attach some samples of the wav files you created so we can check them out.

Dear KL,

With the permission of the author, I am creating a LR/Doman version of a specific teaching program designed to teach children and second-lanuage learners of Classical Arabic how to properly read (visually/orally) the Qur'an with the specific rules of pronunciation/phonics.  This world renowned program is used worldwide for decades and is in a booklet format with 18 Lessons and many examples (and my version has 5 CDS for learning proper pronunciation). 


I imported the Lesson sound tracks into Audacity from 5 CDs that I previously imported into iTunes.  And I am so happy that it is easy to split each Lesson's track into individual sound clips.  This enables me to easily pair it with the corresponding .ppt slide/jpg for LR that I created by scanning the lesson pages and copying/enlarging each hand-written (by a master Arabic calligrapher) example into it's own .ppt slide.  I have done a lot of work in the last several months because there are hundreds of slides and am now working on splitting the 18-Lesson tracks.

When exporting the individual sound clip files from Audacity (created by making labels > http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Splitting_recordings_into_separate_tracks ) there is an option to save it in different formats.  I thought maybe the .wav format was using too much memory and re-saved it as .mp3 format.  But this does not seem to make a difference.

And I am reminded of a similar problem I had with .ppt several months ago where the sound clips were not playing for other classical Arabic slides I was creating.  I remember Shuki helping me figure out that the soundclip files were buried too deep in the directory.  Could this be the same problem?  Which makes no sense because it plays in the word edit window, but not in the playback window? 

Please find attached a few samples with their descriptions: the first clip is "Bismillah ir Rahman ir Raheem" (which Muslims say before beginning anything); the second clip is "Lesson 1 - The Arabic Alphabet (in English / Arabic); the third clip is "Alif" (name of the first letter of the Arabic alphabet), and the third clip is "Baa" (name of the second letter in the alphabet).

I will resave the files to a higher place in the directory and see if that helps.  I will let you know how it goes in about 24 hours, since I will be busy with appointments and errands tomorrow.

There is nothing wrong with that wave file - works for me.

There is likely to be a codec problem on your system.  One situation we've seen a couple of times before which resulted in a similar problem is the conflict of codecs in a system.  In particular, it seems like if both the K-lite codec pack and ffdshow codec are installed, there is sometimes a problem with playback.

Can you check your Add/Remove programs in your Control Panel and see if you have k-lite installed?  If you do, please uninstall that again, and re-install ffdshow.

If not, can you check whether there are any other codec packs installed.

Also, can you create a diagnostic report (Windows Start menu -> BrillKids -> Little Reader -> Diagnostic tools) and attach it here. We should be able to see all codecs from that.

Thanks for checking it.  In Add/Remove Programs, I do not see "Codec" listed in the C's alphabetically?  Is it called something else?      Although I do see "ffdshow" listed in the Fs alphabetically.

Also, I cannot locate the diagnostic report that I generated?

Well, it's definitely a codec issue, but can't tell what is causing it yet.

Can you please uninstall ffdshow and download/install it again to make sure you have the latest version:
