Hi!
I am trying to add some new words to a category, but the "add word" window  is too tall for my computer screen. the button "save" does not show on the bottom, so I can not save anything.
I tried to move window up, but I was not able to. Please, help .

@sidonia:
As I might have mentioned before (in your older posts where you were asking the same question), Playlists can be freely customizable as you can add words from different Categories or you can add an entire Category to your Playlist. Aside from this you can even rearrange everything you added to your Playlist in whatever way you like.

You can just refer to this page for detailed instructions on how to do it: http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/create-and-edit-playlists

Once you've added the words or Categories to your Playlist, the next thing to do is to change the playback settings. Just toggle the "Playback Settings" tab and here you can modify all the settings you want to use for your new Playlist (e.g., change the playback mode to Picture Only, change the font color, etc.). Do note, though, that the more customizations you want to do, the more steps you will need to take -- also, this will be a tedious task if you want to make a large playlist.

Again, should you need more instructions on how you can create or personalize your Little Reader lessons, I suggest that you go through the manual, or even the Support pages, as the information you need will be there.

@NadiaD:
From your description, it seems that you (or someone) have customized your computer's DPI settings, and this would result in certain elements in LR's interface to be too big or too far apart, and vice versa. I suggest that you adjust your DPI settings back to the default setting (96 DPI), so that LR will appear correctly: http://support.brillkids.com/index.php/article/dpi-resolution

When making Chinese LR files, how do I make the characters appear on two separate lines instead of one? For example, I want to have two verses of a poem appear on one slide but on two lines:

床前明月光,
疑是地上霜.

instead of

床前明月光, 疑是地上霜.

Can it be done?

I am trying to print flashcards.
When I print them out they always come out with different font sizes  to  fit to the paper size ( word 'eat' is huge, word 'sandwich' is small).
Is there any way to change that, to keep the same font size for all words.
Thank you in advance for the reply!

Kezia, thank you very much for simple and clear instructions on how to change the settings of the computer screen.
Karma to you!

@aangeles: Yes, you can make slides display phrases/sentences in two (or more) lines in LR 2.0 -- all you need to do is edit how your lines are written in the LR "word file." As you may have noticed the redesigned Edit Word window has a bigger text area for "Word(s)" in the Word Slide tab. To make LR display your poem verses in two lines, simply press ENTER on your keyboard right where the first verse ends (it works just like how you edit your sentences in Word, Notepad, etc.).
And of course, you can do this in any language!  yes

@NadiaD: There is no font size option in LR's Print function yet, unfortunately. LR automatically assigns font sizes depending on how long each word is, which explains why your "eat" word card was printed in a larger font size than your "sandwich" word card. We'll see if we can add this option in the next version, though, so thanks for pointing that out!

@sidonia: If you are planning to create books that have the words printed separately from the pictures, then yes, you can do it in LR. You will need to create your Category for a certain story first, where you have each line in the story as the "words" and for each "word" you will add a picture for that particular line. When you've completed your story Category, you can just use LR's Print function to print them out as flash cards, which you can place in a binder (or just bind them together using a fastener, stapler, etc.). You may also find what I suggested for aangeles quite useful for what you are planning (i.e., having words display in two or more lines per slide).

If you have the Semester 2 curriculum, I suggest that you take a look at how the Stories or Simple Sentences Categories were done so you have a clear example of how to do it.

Can you pause during playback? My son who is disabled wants to follow and read out the words but he is slow and using a lot of effort. I want to be able to pause so he can finish his word, and concentrate on the following words.  Can we do that?

Hi MIP1999,

We don't have a pause button. However you can automatically set lessons so that each slide is paused after it is shown. This happens by default for some lessons such as the Multisensory lessons.  You can make happen for all lesson by changing the changing disabling 'Auto-Forward' in 'Override Settings'.

You can then just proceed to next screen by pressing the Spacebar or left-clicking the mouse

To disable Auto-Forward:

1. Go to either either Advanced Edit Screen or Play Courses Screen depending on what lessons you want to play.

2. Click on the Override Settings Cog Wheel button (just to the left of the play button)

3. Locate the 'Auto-Forward' setting and turn it to OFF, and make this setting is active by clicking on the light is turned to GREEN. Click on save.

4. Make this Override Setting active by turning in on by clicking on 'Override' the light should change to GREEN.

Hi there BrillKids Tech Support Team,

The new version is awesome!  smile  I wanted to print out half sized cards in Arabic, and am unable to locate the "customize font" option, so that the words will display correctly using a highly specialized computer font based on the calligraphy script used in the Qur'an printed in Medina, Saudi Arabia; and any font will not do.

And I also want to know how to print 2 different word cards as half sized cards - without pictures - per sheet of paper, please?

Thanks.
Ayesha

Hi Ayesha,

Unfortunately there is no custom font option in the Print feature yet -- for now you can only print out your words with the default fonts (Arial, Times New Roman, Comic Sans, and Tahoma), in any (or randomized) font color. We will keep this in mind when we work on the next version, so thank you for pointing this out.

As for printing two different words in one sheet, right now you can only print out one word on each sheet. When you print this out as a Half Sheet card, you can choose to specify how many word prints you want "per word" (see "Number of Word Prints" option in your Print screen), and you'll find that when you select just 1 word print, your printout will have the word on one half with the other half left blank.

I realize this may not be exactly what you're looking for, but you may find this page useful too: http://www.brillkids.com/littlereader/moreinfo.html
(you can also access this page directly from LR by clicking on the Help button at the bottom of the Print screen)

Hi Kezia!

Thank you.  Another question.  I downloaded an Arabic .cat file "111- al Masad" by nellie.

Is there a way to have doubled spaced lines, in between the rows of wrapped text for Arabic?  Because as I am looking at this on the screen (with automatic font sizing), the diacritical marks above and below the Arabic letters are bumping into each other and it is unclear to read.

Thanks.

Currently there is a "Double Space" playback setting, but this one just adds extra spaces in between words. There is no double space that applies to the actual lines of text yet (in the same way it works in Word, for example), but for now I tried experimenting a bit with the *.cat file you mentioned and have some suggestions you may want to try:

1. Go to Advanced Play/Edit and select the specific Category, then the word you want to add extra lines to. "Edit" this word and you'll notice that in the Word Slide tab there's a bigger space for the text now. Simply press your Enter key where you want to insert line breaks in the text, and press again if you want to add 2 extra lines. Now if you try test-playing this word you may find that LR doesn't exactly display the text with double-spaced lines -- try typing any small character (apostrophe, period, comma, etc.) in these extra lines and only then will you see the double-spaced lines.

In the meantime we'll see if we can quickly adjust how LR displays blank lines in time for the next (minor) update smile

2. For longer lines of text, it may help to adjust the font size to a smaller one especially if you'll be adding double-spaced lines there.

Thanks again for the idea/suggestion!  laugh

Thanks Kezia!  I also was happy that I could copy Arabic text (and English text) directly from a colleague's website:

(best viewed in IE or Safari:)
http://www.houseofquran.com/qsys/quranteacher1.html

and can paste it directly into the LR word slide, and make sure that the text direction is from right-to-left, and select the font "me_quranKer6" (that is downloadable from the site), and it displays properly.   yes

I created and uploaded a LR .cat file as an example for "Surah 001 al Fatihah by ayah with Shk ar-Ra'ee" using this special Arabic font, and attached mp3 soundclips; and it asked me if I wanted to export the font (or something like this) and I said yes.  So, I hope that the font will display properly for anyone else that downloads it - but unsure if it will.   I also suggested to Nellie that she use the above website to copy/paste from and download the font for it to display properly.  Arabic fonts are wacko sometimes.

Is there a way to add a "footnote" at the bottom of a word slide? I am having to do double work over here and it is giving me a headache.  In ppt, I will copy/paste the Arabic text from the above site, enlarge it, and add a very small text box at the bottom with the English translation at Arial 10 pt. in a medium gray color, as a note for myself.  I also print the slides as flashcards from .ppt for binders/books; because of the custom font.

Thanks again! smile

edit > 03/04/2011 @ 4:27 pm EST > I will re-upload the same LR .cat file as "Surah 001 al Fatihah by Ayah Recited by Shk ar-Ra'ee ii" - that will include jpeg's of the .ppt slides in the "picture slide" that I am making with the footnote you can see what i am describing that i wish i could do within LR itself, to cut my production time down. blink i thought about using the word slide for the translation, and make a jpeg for the Arabic, but it is still using two programs, and i want to be able to print them out with the custom font, and have the option of printing multiple words per sheet of paper . . . so, please add these features in the future  smile

edit > 03/05/2011 @ 1:05 pm EST > my husband suggested the following since I want to show the Arabic word first, followed by translation; is when creating the .cat file, make "Word 1" - word file for the Arabic text, followed by "Word 2" - word file for the English translation; which would work I suppose, although when i select randomize, the Arabic text will not synch with the correct English translation , and I still am unable to  print using a custom font - I really wish they could be on the same page as you can see in the .ppt/jpegs.   (some people have the opinion that just learning the individual words and how to pronounce the ayah/sentences in a surah/chapter is more important to teach the children, because they memorize so fast at this age; however, i believe that because they do memorize so fast and so much at this age, that we should include the translation - otherwise, they know how to pronounce, but don't know the meaning; and the response is that it will be taught later - and i know many people have memorized the Qur'an, cover to cover, flawlessly with pronunciation; but don't understand the meanings and don't have time to study it now; so this is why it is sooo important to me to be able to have the Arabic word first, and the English translation second - preferrably on the same page, and printable) > like this little girl in India has learned both at the same time:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/UL7gYBb1CBc&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/UL7gYBb1CBc&rel=1</a>

and i want to teach my children the same, using LR . . .and wihtout having to make a seperate ppt!!!  Sad

* * *

edit > su 03.06.2011 @ 2:45 pm EST > i just figured out that i can set up the playback:

1.  to play the picture first and then the word
2.  enable the subtitles for current slide (at 10 pt).

but i want/need to be able to just copy/paste Arabic text as the "word" and also have the English translation as a seperate footnote/subtitle, displaying on the same slide/page/card?  wacko and how to print it out like that as well? ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i have a headache from this!  tongue
