Flexible options let you use your media to personalize your library - use your own pictures, record your own voice to pronounce each word, and even add snippets of your home videos. Little Reader’s versatile editing tools also allows you to add words, playlists and categories, so once you feel your child is ready for new words, you can personally create new ones in an easy and stress-free way!

Here are a few ideas on how to personalize your child's Little Reader lessons:

     1.   Take pictures of your family, relatives and pets
Add them into the family Category (included in the Little Reader default Library). We have provided the Mommy and Daddy word files, but you can also add Grandfathers, Aunts and even your pet dog! You can even take a video or record them talking (or barking) to the child to add to your family Category as videos or picture audio.

     2.   Create your own "Body Parts" Category
Take photos of you and your child's body parts like "hand", "foot", "ear", "nose" and "eye" and create a Category to teach them the names of the body parts. If you are giving multisensory lessons, don't forget to interact with your child by touching his nose when the "nose" slide comes up!

     3.   Add to the "Action Words" Category with your own videos
Create your own videos of you and your family members drinking, eating, walking, etc.  Add them to the "Action Words" Category. Seeing these different and more realistic videos will help them understand the action and the meaning behind the word better, especially when they often see these things happening at home.

     4.   Create your child's own "Things to Wear" Category
Take photos of your child's clothes and shoes and add them to a Category of "Things to Wear", encouraging them to associate words with objects that they use every day will help aid their learning, especially with understanding the meaning and the use of the object.

     5.   Create a Category full of your child's favorite things
Take pictures of your child's favorite toys, foods, objects or even people and add them to your child's own "My Favorite Things" Category. Your child will definitely enjoy learning about them and seeing them on screen!

     6.   Create an "Around the House" Category
Take pictures of all the rooms or areas in your house and create word files like "bedroom", "toilet" and "kitchen". You can even include "play area," "garden" and "staircase," depending on the layout of your own home.

     7.   Create your own food Categories
Personalize the food Categories to include local foods relevant to you and your family.  Include family recipes (Grandma's chocolate chip cookies) or fruit only available from your local market. Include food that your child can eat. This way, you can personalize and aid the multisensory lesson by including tasting during the lesson. To do this, disable the auto-forward function in the playback settings panel, so you can hold the lesson while you and your children have a fun meal!
Note: Be sure to prepare these lessons ahead of time, and don't let your child stay too near the computer - lessons can get messy!

     8.   Create a Category of your child's daily schedule
Include things that your child does daily. Add phrases like: "wake up", "eat breakfast", "take a bath" and "naptime." Not only will your child learn these everyday phrases for everyday use, but it will also help them get a better understanding of their own daily schedule. Remember to enforce the learning by repeating these words throughout the day, before and during the activity.
Note: To make sure that the list of words is played in order, create a My Daily Schedule playlist and under the Order playback settings, save it as "according to list!"

     9.   Create Categories from previous holidays or trips
Collect some old pictures from previous holidays or take pictures the next time you and your family go on a trip! Create Categories dedicated to a particular country or city filled with things that your child saw and experienced. These can be names of places or famous monuments, types of plants, weather, activities, people and more!

     10.   Take pictures of local places around your neighborhood
Teach your child names of places and buildings to recognize as they grow older. Create a Category filled with important buildings like "school" and "hospital" as well as places like the "park" and the "playground". Don't forget "home"!
     11.   Add to the "Nature" Category with things around your home
Add to and change the Nature Category depending on where you live. You can remove the "mountain" word file and add "beach" instead. You can even add things from your backyard like "oak tree", "rose bush" and "grass" to make them more relevant to your child and family.

     12.   Create Categories for your home country or state
Find pictures of your country's flag, maps, important people, famous places, local food and more. Personalize and teach your child specific words about their home country or state.

     13.   Teach your child through loc al stories and old folk tales
Choose some of your favorite childhood stories, old local traditional folk tales or even personal memories and separate the stories into sections. Record them separately with the Easy Voice Recorder and create your own word files.  You can even add pictures and picture audio to help aid the story (e.g. a dog barking or a roar to go with a monster story).

     14.   Teach your child local songs or nursery rhymes
Find some of your own favorite local songs and nursery rhymes and create Categories from them. Separate the song into sections - for example, split up "baa baa black sheep" and "have you any wool" instead of putting them in one long sentence. Record yourself reciting or singing these sections separately with the Easy Voice Recorder and add them to the different word files. To personalize these word files further, you can add images or even record the sections with music playing to make learning more fun and exciting!

Do you have to have the license key to upload pictures? I keep getting a error screen. Maybe I am not doing it right.

Hi Shanalynn,

Could you kindly describe to us what you are doing when you upload pictures?  If you can give us step-by-step instructions to reproduce the error screen that would greatly help us smile

Also, if it is possible, could you provide us with a screenshot of the error screen you are encountering? To learn how to take a screenshot, please click here.

Thanks!

Shuki smile

Do you know of a reliable source where we can download audio files of pronunciations? - MIP1999

Hello Lilian!

Not for pronunciations I'm afraid, although there are many text-to-speech editors available which can pronounce the words for you if you like.  They can be used to record your pronunciations for you, but mind that they are imperfect and may likely sound "robotic" when playing out the pronunciations.

Here are some programs which can do it for you: (free trial)
http://www.nch.com.au/verbose/index.html
http://www.naturalreaders.com/

Even with the text-to-speech programs, we still highly recommend creating your own voice pronunciations in order to involve yourself more in the learning process of your child - hearing your voice sound out the words are more likely to be effective than hearing any others'.  smile

Thanks for your suggestion.
Actually I have always been recording my own voice.  But when I downloaded the files from the library, they sound so professional so I thought there is an alternate source.
