Hi,
I have uiploaded my Mammals-2 catagory.
It contains words, pictures x3, pronuniations and POI for each of the following:
-Zebra
-Giraffe
-Hippopotamus
-Lion
-Giant panda
Please find details of POI below if you would like to record your own voice. I know my Australian accent may sound a bit strange to amny of you.
MAMMALS 2
ZEBRA
-There are three species of zebra.
-Zebras are mammals
-A group of zebras is called a herd
-Zebras live in parts of Africa
-On average, a zebra in the wild lives 25 years
-Zebras range from a height of 3.5 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters) at the shoulder.
-Zebras weigh from 440 to 990 pounds (200 to 450 kilograms).
- Zebras belong to the horse family.
- A zebra can run up to about 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour).
- A baby zebra can stand up just 20 minutes after it's born. It can run when it's an hour old.
GIRAFFE
- The giraffe is the tallest mammal on Earth. Giraffes can be 19 feet (6 meters) tall.
- A giraffe's tongue can be up to 21 inches (53 centimeters) long. It is also prehensile, which means it can grab and hold onto objects.
- Giraffes can go weeks without drinking water. Giraffes get most of the water they need from the plants they eat.
- Scientists used to believe that giraffes made no sound, but giraffes do make noises.
- Some giraffe sounds, called infrasound, cannot be heard by humans.
- Female giraffes are pregnant for approximately 15 months before giving birth.
- A newborn giraffe is about 6 feet (1.9 meters) tall at birth and weighs about 150 pounds (68 kilograms).
- Giraffes grow about 4 feet (1.2 meters) in their first year of life.
- The giraffe usually sleeps standing up, because it can take too long for a giraffe to get back up on its feet if a predator should approach.
- Giraffes have two to four short, blunt horns on their head. No two giraffes have the same pattern of spots.
HIPPOPOTAMUS
- The scientific name for the common hippo is Hippopotamus amphibious.
- Hippopotamus comes from two Greek words that mean river horse.
- Hippos' toes are webbed, which helps them paddle through the water.
- Hippopotamuses live in rivers and lakes in central and southern Africa.
- A hippo is 12 to 15 feet (4 to 5 meters) long and weighs from 5,000 to 8,000 pounds (2,300 to 3,600 kilograms).
- Hippos eat only vegetation—grasses and water plants.
- Baby hippos are called calves. They often nurse underwater.
- Baby hippos are born underwater. They can swim almost from the moment they're born.
- Hippos can live to be more than 40 years old in the wild.
- Hippopotamuses are aggressive, do not fear humans, and are considered one of Africa's more dangerous animals.
LION
- Lions belong to the Felidae or cat family
- Unlike most cats, lions are excellent swimmers.
- Lions are carnivores—meat eaters. They hunt animals ranging in size from small hares to large buffalo.
- Lions are mammals.
- When lions walk, their heels don't touch the ground.
- Generally, the darker the lion's mane, the older he is.
- Lions can run at a top speed of 36 miles (58 kilometers) an hour, but not for long.
- Lions are the only members of the cat family (Felidae) with manes, though only the male lions have manes.
- A full grown adult male lion can weigh between 330 and 550 pounds (150 and 259 kilograms).
- Lions have been known to live nearly 30 years in captivity and have an average life span of 15 years in the wild.
GIANT PANDA
- There are probably only about 1,000 giant pandas left in the wild. They are classified as an endangered species.
- Pandas are mammals.
- Giant pandas may live to be up to 30 years old in captivity.
- Giant pandas weigh between 165 and 300 pounds (75 and 136 kilograms).
- Giant pandas used to range throughout southern and eastern China, Myanmar, and north Vietnam. Now they are found only in a small part of China.
- After the age of six, female giant pandas begin to have cubs.
- Giant pandas are found in the wild only in mountainous bamboo forests of southwestern China.
- Habitat loss caused by logging is the largest threat to giant pandas today.
- Young pandas stay with their mothers for up to 18 months.

- Pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves.
