Hi guys, my LO is 18wks and we are on day three of LR and LM. I'd say that about 2/3rds of the time she is watching the laptop but sometimes she shows no interest and will just have a nosey around the room instead! I make sure there are no distractions etc. I did session 1 with her 3.5 brother this morning which was a complete failure, she couldn't take her eyes off him so that's a no no in future, I'll do them separately from now on.

Basically I wondered if I'm worrying over nothing...is this normal and is still still absorbing enough or do I need to find a way to ensure she watches the full presentation? Any help would be fab.

Here are a few threads that will have some ideas for you to try out-

http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-to-read/how-to-make-your-3-year-old-concentrate/

http://forum.brillkids.com/teaching-your-child-to-read/how-to-teach/

http://forum.brillkids.com/little-reader/how-do-i-get-my-25-months-old-daughter-to-be-interested-in-little-reader/

When all else fails, take a break and revisit it in a few months. You may get a completely different response when your child reaches new developmental milestones. Good luck!

What we've done since day 1 of computer oriented stuff (since week 2 maybe?) is I feed him while in front of the computer. He'll tolerate anything if he has milk going down the gully.... even LM ha ha ha... so if you nurse, this is the downside. Pump & feed is better IMO for this particular reason (you can multitask and educate while feeding)

You need to believe your children. Give them time to learn something new. What you do is to feed them information. Impatience and good result is coming. I know one of my friends, at that time, her daughter was 18 months old. She bought LR to her daughter to lean English. Now she is 24 months, she can read simple English sentences and simple mother tounge language sentences. Believe your children  smile

My daughter is 20 months, and I always hold her during her LR lessons. It helps her stay focused. We started doing LR with her at 3 months old, so she's also got accustomed to doing these lessons daily. Keep trying!

My 2 cents;  you should not care if she's learning or not.  You could have big brother with you, you could even have all the ordinary distractions about.  IMO, the best place to do lessons is where you spend most of your day, maybe in the living room area?

When you're spending time with your little one, holding her, talking to her, singing, reading, playing etc.  you are in fact teaching her a great deal of skills and aiding her development, yet you don't care if she's learning, you're just enjoying her, it's just time spent together.  The thoughts, is she concentrating, is she looking, is she learning? never even enter your mind.  Off course she's learning to talk, learning about body language, learning about love etc  you know it yet you don't even think about it and I think most of us take it for granted, it's things that just happen.  Teaching reading should be exactly like that.  Just run the lessons when ever you feel like it, as if you put it on for yourself to enjoy watching it and the kids just happen to be about. Smooch your little ones during a lesson if you feel like smooching and talk or move about as if you're just watching TV, don't feel like you or anybody else has to be quiet or focused during the lessons - that's for traditional classrooms and that, IMO, doesn't work all that well for any student.

I hope this reply doesn't make you feel attacked.  I can talk about this topic at length because I've made these mistakes I mention, not because I think you are making them too.

Relax, have fun and I hope to hear your success stories in the future.

I would suggest focusing more on infant stimulation cards at this stage, plus talking, singing, etc.  LR was designed to be used more for 4-6 months and up.  If you choose to do it now, keep the lessons very short, and as MamaOWill mentioned, don't care whether she's learning or not.  The focus is not on results, but simply on exposure.

Pump & feed is better IMO for this particular reason (you can multitask and educate while feeding)

I would be careful about nipple confusion doing that, etc etc Having a well established BF routine is critical and way more important for an infant at this age.

Like KL and MamaofWill mentioned -- concentrate on talking, singing, infant stimulation cards, lots of input, without focusing on the output. Little ones are truly amazing, the take everything in. I did a lot of narration -- narrating everything I was doing, talking about everything around. Both my husband and I wore our babies, and it provides an excellent opportunity for stimulation, talking, narrating everything during the day.

We started LR, LM and LMs at about 16 weeks, I started with very short, very fast flowing lessons. I introduced LR first, 2 weeks later - LM and another 2 weeks later - LMs, then LR Chinese the last one.

At the beginning he enjoyed fast flash the best. So during LR lessons I just showed the word and picture with no long picture audio ( I customized it), gradually we introduced Picture Audios later on, but for the young infant they are not critical, what counts is seeing written words and related pictures. After a while doing it this way, I would sometimes pause during the picture slide and will talk about it ( instead of PA).

With Little Math, I customized to show only 3 math problems each lesson ( instead of 10 from default setting) and I also changed the numbers and quantities to 5 per session. It worked the best with his concentration level, and later when he was able to concentrate for longer we still kept the sessions quite short, we were ending them with him wanting more. That was a real secret, as now at 14 months he still considers Little Math, Little Reader and Little Musician his favorite activities, a real treat.

Obviously they can not do games themselves when they are that little and just starting. I kept that part of the lesson flowing, doing it myself and cheering loudly with each right answer. By about 6 months I noticed how he was looking at the right word or picture in games even before I pointed it out, he was getting about 7 out of 10 right! But when he hesitated or got distracted I would not make a big deal, expecting him to perform but would just continue on with the lesson enthusiastically.

Also, it is important to do lessons when your baby is fed, happy and alert. So make sure she is nursed, has dry diaper and happy otherwise. It makes a huge difference.

Another thing that I discovered -- it is more important to have shorter lessons/teaching moments regularly, then longer sessions occasionally.

Regularity makes a huge difference. That is why Little Reader, Little Math and Little Musician were ( and are) such a treasure for me - I knew that even if I will not have time to prepare anything else, I have those 3 lessons prepared and waiting for me at any time of day or night. Having done them regualrly, my little boy developed an incredible love for learning. Even his first word was book :-)

Hope some of these suggestions will help.

Let us know  how it is going!

its very difficult working around older children. My little one is a bit over 4 months and its difficult to do anything for him with all the visual and auditory distractions. Soon they'll be back to school and kinder so I'll utilise that time. My last child wasnt interested in Brillkids or YBCR or anything...turned her head away...turns out she had glue ear, and a hearing loss underneath that. So she may have been trying to listen.

This is all very helpful. We're just now getting started with the free trial, at 20 months, and I am trying to figure out the best way to keep her engaged. I started out holding her, she she would get squirmy on me. Now we do it right after she eats, while she is still in her highchair, and that seems to work better for us.
