Commercial availability of LR Deluxe Flashcards?

Hi everyone,

we got our LR Deluxe kit this week-end, and I am realizing that the binder set does not include all the flashcards that are necessary to do the entire year-long curriculum. I realize that I can print them myself using the LR program, but I seriously do not have the time or an adequate printer to do this (except at work, but this wouldn't really be appropriate), so I am wondering if anyone knew of a commercial source for these?? Am I missing something here? This is an expensive product, and I am disappointed by this discovery.

Only thing I could suggest is going to a Kinkos, although this could get costly.  I am surprised they don't include these.  This makes me question whether getting the Deluxe version is worth it.  What are your thoughts?

Hi Ann,

yes, Kinko's does get quite costly (I know because I used them to print flashcards before, and it was a pretty penny). I understand the importance of using paper rather than just electronic means to teach these things. However, considering the large difference in cost (over $100) between the regular version and the deluxe version, I think I would have liked to know that so many cards would not be included and have an opportunity to comparison shop (with Kinko's). The binder set itself is worth $30, but again, this is something that is nice but can easily be home made for much cheaper.

Hi Rivi and Ann2010,

We did specify that the Little Reader Deluxe Kit comes with word and picture printouts for only 8 Core Categories, each category containing around 10 words each -- for a total of 160 word and picture printouts.

This is clearly mentioned in the Online Store's Deluxe Kit product page at http://www.brillkids.com/onlinestore/lr-deluxe.php (refer to the Product Description tab), and also in the Little Reader Basic vs Deluxe comparison page at http://www.brillkids.com/teach-reading/whats-in-it.php (see Additional Offline Teaching Tools section).

The reason for this is because there are over 3,000 words in the curriculum, so if printouts for all of these words were included in the Deluxe Kit then the package will definitely weigh more, greatly affecting the shipping fee that you pay for on top of the product price itself. As the storybooks, flap & flash cards, and binders included in the Deluxe Kit are already quite heavy, we inevitably needed to include only a certain number of word and picture printouts.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but do note that a lot of factors were considered when we decided on which items will be included in the Deluxe Kit.

I have no problem with that.  It was just could to here a parents opinion.  I make a lot of stuff for my sons anyway,  therefore, it is not a big deal for me to do that with this.  There is no need for you to be defensive or offended it is just one parent view point, which I chose to consider before I decided what to purchase.  As I said it is no slight on you or the product because i am use to making things for my boys.

Hmm, maybe Little Reader can make individual packaged cards. Say for instance a box of sight words, or a box of words that are animals etc. and sell them seperately? Just a thought. Kind of like what Monkisee and Preschool Prep do.
That way if someone wants to buy some and make some it won't seem so daunting.
Plus if you sell packaged cards seperately from the kit then shipping wouldn't be impossible.

to the Brillkids Staff,

while it is true that the kit description mentions 8 categories, the exact significance of these 8 categories is unknown until one receives the kit and read the extensive instructions. The reality is that there are many more than 8 categories, this fact should be prominently advertised to potential buyers who are about to spend over $200 for this product. I am not saying that LRbasic is anything less than an excellent program, I am saying that parents should clearly know what they are buying (versus what they will ultimately need) to complete the curriculum when they spend the extra cash for the deluxe version. You should see my criticism as a business opportunity, as I am sure that I am not the only working parent who doesn't have to print thousands of cards. If I did, I would probably use the Doman books instead of your program.

Hello ladies,

We thank you very much for the comments, and rest assured we are all taking them into consideration - in the way we advertise, write our pages, and promote our products.

We have been thinking about completely laying out all the printouts needed to complete the curriculum and offering them as a separate item available for purchase (for those who don't want to print out their own cards) - the only thing is we had to halt the production on this quite a bit so we can focus on getting a few things out first: v2.0 formal lauch, LR ipad app (Yes! We're finally programming this!), and Little Musician.

I wouldn't be able to put any date on this, but I can safely say that this is definitely on our plate of "things to do."

Hi Rivi!

The French content pack is currently being produced - the pronunciations and picture audio are being recorded and edited and the media files are being tested and compiled. Personally I see the whole being being packed and ready for testing by March (it takes a while to get everything 'almost' right!) and perhaps available commercially soon after.

What we've almost completed doing is repackaging the LR deluxe kit - probably as soon as end of February you all will see a completely new deluxe kit for retail. I won't go into details, but with product repackaging in mind, we will be taking "a few items" out of the current deluxe kit and replacing it with "something new."

I hope everyone looks forward to seeing the new products.

Hi guys,

First of all, we wish we could have included printouts of all words into the kit.  The problem would be that the cost would have been much MUCH more, and the kit would have probably weighed more than double (as if it's not heavy enough already, at 6kg!).  Remember, we're talking about around 180 Categories of words in total, many of which have both word and picture sheets to print out. I'm guessing (*doing rough estimate in head*) that would be more than 2000 sheets of paper!

Thanks for letting us know you don't think this fact was prominent enough - we will look into this and make sure it's clear.

We have thought about printing out the rest and making them available separately.  In fact, a lot of the flash cards have already been laid out ready for print.  However, like Lappy said, a lot more work is involved, and we weren't sure what the demand would be like.

Hello there,

I'm totally new here, and I guess I should have introduced myself somewhere else. In any case, my husband and I purchased the Deluxe version for our 25 month old dd and downloaded the program.  We started immediately and she absolutely loves it.  It's been 15 days and it's amazing how fast she absorbs all the words and repeats all of them.  I think her vocabulary has increased tremendously in the past few days and she's finally putting two words together... her speech is very intelligible as well!!      

So, when we received the package two days ago, I was very excited, but somewhat confused because it seems I have two sets of the "Common Animals 1", one set of "Common Animals 2", only one set of "Action Words 2", one set of "Parts of the Body 1", one set "Kid Things", one set of "Colors 1".  It seems that either I received by mistake an extra set of the "common animals 1" and did not receive "action words 2" or there's a reason i'm not understanding... If somebody can explain, that would be great.

I don't know where I have to download the other flash/flap cards and pictures (I know I can customize and use my own images).  If someone can direct me where to download, I would appreciate it.

I will be giving an update very soon, as I am very, very excited about this program.  We have tried the DVDs (Baby can read) and the Doman flash cards, and this is the one program that seems to fit our style, and our girl loves it!!
