Hi,

wonder which is the best way to teach 20 month old bb sight words? Is hardcopy flashcard better or use Little Reader? Pls share your view.

thanks.

I'd use LR or make a powerpoint presentation and flash them quickly.  Then you could play some hardcopy games with your child - print them out on large pieces of paper and have your child go get the word you've called out (or lay them on the ground and have him hop over it/stomp on it/put a teddy bear on it ...etc).  At your child's age flashing quickly is still going to be a good idea.

Today I had my 3.5 year old read a list of sight words and put a penny on each word he could read on his own.  Then, he paid me 10 cents for a chocolate chip - yes, he's easy to please smile

Hi kizudo ,

how do you make sight words in LR? Not sure am i creating correctly here..

Eg. i want to create " I, am , a, happy, boy"
I created a category call "sight words"... then, I created on the word slide .for all these words individually...t but each time i was asked to "Pls enter a word file name" and i saved it. That means, i created this 5 sight words, i will need to save 5word file , am i right? Hope you can enlighten me...

 Thanks

I've tried many things for sight words- what worked best for us is Preschool prep DVD's and their sight word flash cards. I have their easy readers too- so he feels good when he sees familiar words :-)

You maybe able to create files for those words on LR and reinforce it.

I have realized that as a child grows and understands things, pictures and colors make words come alive and easier to remember. My 5 cents.

Since he is very active, I even bought Heidisongs DVDs but my son lost interest in that very soon. I think this is best suited for classroom environment.

He gets them all right when I ask him to say the word on the card and then jump over the card...go figure ... LOL

Sorry, Babymom, for my delay in responding.

I would suggest PMing Teaching My Toddlers.  She's a whiz when it comes to LR stuff.

I, personally, use PowerPoint presentations.  I know that system fairly well and what I like about it is that I can use several frames for one sentence.  What I mean by that is if I wanted him to read the sentence "I am a happy boy."  I type that sentence out in full, then copy it onto 5 different pages (because there are 5 words in that sentence).  Then I go up to the first page and highlight the word "I" and change the print colour to red.  Then I highlight "am a happy boy" and choose the print colour to be white.  Then I go to the next page.  Here I keep the word "I" black, change the word "am" to red font and the words "a happy boy" to white.  On the third page, I leave "I am" black, change "a" to red, and "happy boy" to white.  ETC.  By doing this for the entire sentence you will have the effect of words popping in as you scroll through the presentation.  It is VERY important to change the unwanted words to white, rather than delete them - otherwise, when you scroll through the presentation the black words don't stay put and seem to move around.  What you want is a smooth transition from slide to slide giving the effect that the new words (red) are just popping in.

The reason I like this is that he doesn't need to see the entire sentence at one time and it is very clear as to which word is being read at that exact moment.  Oh, I should say that I read the words for him if he cannot.

Each sentence is followed by a related picture.

So, if I write a mini story about him that has 5 sentences and each sentence has between 5-8 words plus the picture, the whole document will be between 30 and 45 slides long.  Very long, but I find, really effective.

I hope this helps.  If not, PM me and I'll see if I can make it clearer.

In LR, I switch the sound off and I got to Advanced play/edit categories window. Here we have a set of lists each week and I play words as fast as I want. Sometimes I play fast, sometimes I explain pictures. I think, in this way you can teach sight words in a rather classical way.

We use another language therefore I keep sound off. I switch it on when we watch animals, songs and stories. I do not use curriculum. I use powerpoint also.

I do not adjust the speed. I switch the words manually, with mouse smile
I edited files in my language and I say words by myself. I do not create content in LR. For my own content I use powerpoint.
